Your thoughts? :P
A really stupid idea. Theres nothing wrong with focused fire. For me to explain why theres nothing wrong with it, you would first have to explain whats wrong with it. -------------------- '\0/\0/\0/\0/\0/' Cant we all just get along?

remove names from overview column, replace them just with ship type.
no more focused fire without some sort of painting system.

I'm all for this just because my name starts with 'A'. There should seriously be a warning during character creation about that. Alternatively, maybe make it ship name?

That would solve it if the ship is far away, but if its orbiting it might be difficult?
Anyhow, no overview would make this game unplayable considering how much lag there is in fleet battles as having names in a small box is better when youre running at -10 fps
Thats my take on it anyways. zoom out?

Awesome. Why bother with a 3D engine at all at this point? EVE might as well just settle for being the most complicated Netrek ever.
As it stands now, I get the best views of ship combat while watching CCP-made promo vids. I'd rather see the game like that, not just as little boxes with blinky colors.

Just removing player name from the overview would solve the problem.
problem with focus fire is... it is the main caus why you blob! If you cannot easily focus fire 200 ships there is no use on bringign 200 ships. Also makes teh fights much longer when we dont have focus fire.
If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough |

Just something to consider for those that see blobbing and fast fleet fights as something inherently bad.
Imagine there would be no fast kills, then there'd be far less kills in total as well, right ?
Then, how does one cause damage to one's enemy ?
I know, winning fights is cool and ****. We all want to win, preferably more often then losing. However, looking at wars on a grander scale we want to not just win the fight but also win the war at some point.
How do you win a war where the damage you cause to your collective enemy is a fraction of what it is now ? I personally already see the damages caused by shiploss as too minor at this point, let alone that i'd like to see it decline further...

the current mechanics of warfare are quite good, its just the lag that makes big fights suck.

You don't remove focus fire you remove the underlying cause of it - which is that to do anything you need a huge blob.
Focus fire should technically be a really good anti-blob measure (it makes tanking worthless - that's a HUGE drawback for a lot of ships), but because you need blobs to do anything else it's just the only sensible recourse.
You can't focus fire if someone actually had a reason to hit several systems at once.

Thats what most people(including you I bet) fly with anyways. Zoomed out max with all effects and sound off. I turn my depth buffer off too when on an OP.

I cant see how removing focusfire is a good idea, or even logical. Sure, we have some strange gamemechanics, but seriously.
We already have ships that have insane tanks. How do you suppose you will take them down without focusfire. Frigswarms will be totally useless.

Another thing to think about... Titans, recons and dictors. How will you counter it when u cant even see the ****. Suddenly you will see a great flash, OMFGBBQ, OOPS they had a titan on grid. Will only make titans even more powerful.

sounds good to me do away with overview and bring bck the alert window. Yes focus fire can be accomplished without the overview just need a good group of pilots. Oh thats right all the good pilots that used to do this have pretty much retired from eve. Bring us back to some real need for proper warfare tactics and you may see some return again.

Focusfire is fine, the range (and the plethora of aids) with which we can do it is not.
If you honestly want to 'fix' it, in other words entirely revamp EvE, you'd make all offensive ranges much, much smaller in relation to shipspeeds and distances.
Meaning, right now even shortrange turrets used properly cover the entirety of a gate and then some so anybody jumping in is quasi-instantly focusfired by anyone. Switch it useable turrets to hit equal sized targets shooting no further than ~6-8km (leaving current speeds and gateranges) and remove webbers in favor of a gate-disabling device, and focusfire becomes alot less lucrative as opposed to targetting by opportunity.
But as it is right now, snares and tremendous ranges just mean any target worth focusing on can be focused on perfectly, making it the most efficient way to engage.

Hrm.. I think that removing the overview would be... well, troublesome. I like the idea of removing names from it, but people would just use the tag column.
However, something occurs to me. Eve is a game with a stacking penalty on a variety of things. What about introducing a stacking penalty on targeting? One option is to make it hard to target something that is being targeted by many people. This might have problems though. Another option, which I like the best, is to increase the miss rate for turret fire. For missiles, they could have a problem where they get blown up early. You could explain this(if you must justify it with pseudo science) as there's more and more lasers/projectiles/etc flying at the target, so some of them are bound to interfere with each other.
Some very simple server side math, and viola, you have this feature. You could vary the number of attackers that affect a ship by it's signature radius. The larger the target, the less of a penalty for multiple attackers.
Just a thought, but probably a better solution then removing a fairly major game feature.

one interesting aspect of this idea is that it would mean a smaller highly skilled group of pilots would stand a very good chance in a fight against a larger group of noobs.
