I know that the Orca can be used as a home away from home and I've read what I can about it.
I want to mine gas with a Prospect but go on an "extended" roam with the Orca along as the "freighter."
Any advice?

I think most of the older threads about people living out of an orca in WH space would stay in one system for a while. Jumping through wormholes is your risk. Many groups keep scouts on their connections and will see you come through. So you may want to setup the orca in a home and then have the prospect roam the chain and then come back to drop off. A C5 with a C5 static would be a good bet.
The more alts you have with you the better for staying safe.
You'll want to setup the Orca with a 500mn MWD so you can fast warp. Even better is to have a webbing ship with you. Have the webbing ship go into the new hole to scout and make safes. Then come back and orbit the WH. When the orca jumps through have the webber sling him to a safe where he can cloak.
Make sure you know which gas sites are preferable and safer along with tactics for orbiting.
You can have a selection of ships in the orca your alt can swap in and out of. A combat ship for taking out the gas site rats would be helpful. Spare prospect in case you lose your ship. Make sure both ships have spare probes.
Never logoff your Orca in the same safe.
You could make use of containers to store the gas to limit the number of times you have to expose your Orca.
Many of the Orca hobo threads suggested taking a small POS to set in a quiet system to operate out of instead of just the Orca. Figure out how long it will take to fill up your Orca - it might be a lot sooner than you think. Combat sites loot is immensely smaller.
Be sure to let us know how long you survive.

15 Prospect Loads + Whatever free space you have in the Corp Hanger/Cargo. That might take a while with only a single Prospect and no one to clear the gas sites (can only mine for 15minutes before the rats spawn)
Assuming Max Skills you can mine 2400m3 in 15 minutes and assuming 200km3 of space that's 83 sites to fill it. Given only a 1-2 C5/6 sites (Good ones) per WH and no rollers thats a pretty long time unless you plan to go far down the chain (alot of scanning time).

maybe bring a drake or something to clear sleeper spawn. And maybe a dessie for salvage. Should all fit in the orca i think. And if you have more than 2 omega accounts, bring more scouts. Hole control is key. |

I think your only real liability is safeguarding the orca. I would recommend a scanner, an orca, a gasser, a salvager and a combat pilot to clear the rats. That being said - at least 2 accounts. I would keep all of them in the same wh as much as possible. moving will be a hassle, but I'm going on the assumption that you'll scan for a honey hole w/ a lot of gas, set up for a bit and move on when it's depleted. There are quite a few lower class wh that get pretty full of gas sites. Don't overlook the undesirable WH flavors (black holes for instance). Folks scan through them, but they are mostly unharvested collector systems.
The trade off: high end wh have better gas, but you can't clear them w/ a bc so the overhead goes way up on them. You can ninja them until the rats spawn, but that's a lot of scanning for a quick hit. Higher end wh (C5 chains) get more traffic of the sort that will take the time to wipe you out. More risk, more overhead, more work...... this lazy gal is recommending C4 and below.
I'd recommend a C3 as there are a lot of them, they have a good amount of gas available and you are always 1 jump from K-space. Their chains also give you a reasonable route to the next honey hole.
Gas is laid out in 3 tiers. C5/C6, C3/C4 and C1/C2. C3 would be the sweet spot in my opinion. Check the market as to gas prices and let that help guide you which sites you want to do. Hauling the gas to your refining place is work, but if you can manage to smash the gas down into polymers - your profits go up and the cargo space needed to get that stuff to market goes way down.
The last time I stuffed ships in an orca (2 years ago???) I think you could fit a BC and a gasser in the hangar. I think. Like I said above, keep all your characters in the wh and use the Orca hanger for replacement ships as the inevitable losses occur. 2 accounts with specifically trained alts (orca, scanner and so on) will go a long way in safeguarding your orca, which is your only real liability in this. Logging them on and off may be a pain, but it's probably better than running 5 accounts.

This is very helpful input. Thanks.
I currently have three Omegas that can participate in this.
The project is in the category of ane experiment "can this be done and what will be the results?"
I'll probably take a stab at it and let this thread know my total ISK loss, over time.

It's been almost a year but I once cleared a cloud (don't remember what it was) but I do recall it was worth about 50m. I only speed tanked and I had far fewer of the basic shield, armor skill than I do now.

go with the porpoise. i used to do this with a DST as a freighter and i always found a hole near a hub that i could sell what i had gathered before it was full. I say porpoise as it is cheaper and can boost.
