There are a couple things I hear people talk about from time to time. The first is a medium freighter...something that is smaller and less expensive than a freighter, but bigger than a normal hauler. The second is difficulty in moving supplies to / from 0.0.
I believe both of those problems can be solved at the same time with the introduction of a medium freighter and an optional jump drive module. Having such a ship will bridge the gap between haulers and freighters quite nicely due to it's medium size and cost (compared to a full freighter). With the purchase of a jump drive module (requiring extra training, of course), this ship can be used to transport large amounts of goods to / from 0.0 space. Some may say this makes 0.0 transportation too easy, but I think it's exactly what we need. CCP has stated quite often that they want more people in 0.0, but if you think about it, the most difficult part of 0.0 living is moving goods. You either have to take chances moving small amounts of cargo in a T1 / T2 hauler, covert ops ship, or use a carrier to haul instead. None of those methods are very easy or efficient...not to mention using a WARship for moving cargo is downright stupid. A "deep space freighter" will be an ideal solution.
If this were to happen, then empire haulers will have a medium freighter that's more affordable, and 0.0 residents have a highly safe and efficient way to establish trade routes and move supplies. When it becomes easier to live in 0.0, you'll get more people moving out there. More people = more conflict = more pew pew. So having safer methods of transportation will ironically make life better for the PvPers too. ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

Why make the jump drive optional?
Just have a medium Freighter that has a jump drive but can still use gates. You can't pop a cyno in highsec so you won't be jumping around there but you can pick things up in highsec and jump directly out to 0.0 without having to ever go into losec.
Give it more than 100K m3 (as that's what a carrier caps out at) and everyone will be happy.

Well as best I understand it, if you don't have all the skills to fly a ship, you can't fly the ship...period. So a built-in jump drive would require those skills simply to use the freighter. Now if they could make it so you can fly the ship without needing to train the jump drive skills first, that would work. ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

I really like this idea. The skills are already in the game aswell - it could just require the same skill as a capital freighter. :)

What's wrong with having to train JDO? It only requires Nav and Warp Drive Ops to V, both low level skills. It's not a big deal. You'll spend more time on Spaceship Command V than on both of those put together.
If you give the Medium Freighter the ability to both use gates and cyno's and give it 120 or 240 (one or two freight containers) of cargo space then it will play a major role in logistics both in Empire and 0.0. I figure it would still have paper for a tank, still warp and align painfully slow, still align like a bathtub trying to glide and still get no slots at all but every Alliance would be mass producing them as they'd quickly replace carriers as the logistics ship of choice.

Good idea but whay cant it have a decend tank? If it becomes a too paper tank it could become target to hi sec pirates. And when it is designed also for 0.0 it should be able to take a pwnding.

Love it. The T2 freighter. The Crane to my Badger. The Viator to my Itty. The Somethingorother to my Obelisk!
Simply put- cut a freighter's cargo way down (120k or 240k sounds great- agreed) give it a usable tank (probably no high slots, but mids and lows would be handy), and let it scoop and/or drop from/to space.
Fit it with jump drives. Require Cap ship skills and JDO. Allow it to move through gates. Make it ungodly slow and make it turn "Like a bathtub trying to glide" (love that) and make sure it's able to be used.
I think this would be a great idea. It would be a powerful trade tool. It would be a new ship to play with. and I already want one. ------ Pain is weakness leaving the body.
