Hi! I've been running level 4 missions in a Maelstrom for a couple of years. I've bought a rattlesnake and have been training skills for it. I prefer the "brawler" style of play with an active tank, to the sniping approach.
I have a couple of questions about running level 4's in a rattlesnake:
1) a lot of the fittings I see for the rattlesnake are using the "arbalest" T1 RH or Cruise launchers - On my skill plan I accounted for training for T2 launchers. Is it worth it?
2) As I prefer closer range / brawling style of play, are Rapid Heavies ok for this? Ive seen some posts suggesting that cruise are still "better"....
Any useful advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

1. Yes, T2 cruise launchers have far more potential over 'Arbalest' cruise launchers for damage against battleships (Fury) and cruisers (Precision). It's generally advisable to run at least one T2 rigor, target painter or precision-scripted missile guidance computer for damage application if you opt for cruise missiles. 2. Yes, T2 rapid heavy launchers are also perfectly acceptable. They need no damage application and auto-targeting heavy missiles are great at picking off orbiting frigates. The 35-second reload time sucks, but that's the trade-off. As heavy missiles have less range, if you're using in conjunction with sentry drones at least one T2 hydraulic rig or range-scripted missile guidance computer is recommended to extend your attack range.

I'm a big fan of the Snake for face tanking L4s with RHM launchers and Geckos. The 35 sec reload sucks, but since drones represent half or more of your DPS (depending on your distribution of DDAs and BCS in the lows), it's never a big deal. For the same reason, upgrading to T2 guns and ammo only represents a small increase in total DPS percentage. I'm also not a fan T2 ammo anyway for range and application reasons - switching ammo types to deal with frigates is not a short process, so I prefer one size fits all faction ammo.
Let me also recommend Dread Guristas RHM launchers - they actually provide BETTER DPS than T2 RHMs with faction ammo and aren't ridiculously expensive. I keep meaning to train Heavy Missiles up to V, but keep putting it off because the justification just hasn't been strong enough yet.
My view is that if you like sniping, put T2 cruise missile launchers on it (which I do think is worthwhile for T2 ammo) paired with sentry drones and a micro jump drive. If you like knife fights, then go with RHMs (T2 not important) paired with Geckos. Given that the Snake can tank every L4 in the game without breaking a sweat, I prefer the higher gank from RHMs.
I use a slightly nontraditional fit that uses a cap stable active tank versus the more popular passive tank. I've found that gives me the best gank (over 1000 DPS) along with the best tank (over 1000 HP/S) for the lowest cost (less than 1B isk).

Where's your propulsion module in this fit? No MJD or MWD? You're limited to a 50-60km range with rapid launchers and if you opt for cruise launchers you have nothing for damage application. You've also left at least 25% of your potential DPS with just 3 damage modules - not too mention you lose a tremendous amount of DPS from travel time with the Gecko. And if your Gecko gets webbed past 60km it's toast.

My buddy really loves drones and he's working towards a Rattlesnake as well. He's working up to this fit:
Cap "stable" @ 29 minutes w/o MWD. 686 omni-tank, 576 dps cruise + 783 dps gecko = 1359 total Target 93km , Drone Control 84km

My alt uses this. It can solo lvl4's and I like my fits cap stable cause my clients crash. I have the long reloads, but he can't use cruise missiles. Drones to tast. I never send drones more than 10-15km. Geko is great even on frigs, otherwise sentries.

If you have unstable connection, mjd fit is safer.
If your connection is fine and you have good skills, rattlesnake does fine with rhml. Mostly cos your gecko is quite happy doing most of the work for you. Rhml is normally not a good choice on most lvl 4 missile ships, cos it does drop your dps, even though application is better. But they rock buzzkill.
Might dust my rs off. Not got it out of the hangar for a while (can't even remember which station it's parked in). Plenty of bling, cruise and sentries, king of full clears. |

An AB is still way better than slowboating. Cuts the travel time down to 1/3 of slowboating. MWDs will cut it down to 1/6--I'm not disputing the MWD is best. Some people don't want the cap penalty of a MWD, and don't realize that 500mn X-types have no cap penalty.
How many people are going to guy buy 500mn X-Types now? LOL

The Gist X-Type 500MN MWD can be obtained for between 85-105m ISK, which is quite reasonable.

Missed more than that.
Propulsion needs will depend on the other systems being deployed.
Launchers need to be combined with the right drone deployment, which will in turn influence the prop mod to be fitted.
if your launching sentries, your sniping. that means cruise + mjd if your launching a gecko or heavies, your going mobile. that means an ab with rapids
fitting a mwd for the sole purpose of getting to gates quickly is wasting the slot
edit and the 'cap stable' comment obviously was a little too complex for you as well. considering the nature of the fit.
small clue, it's not an active tank .......... |
