as far as i know the timer for ghost sites is 2 minutes. from when you warp in.
but ive found 2 tonight while going around scanning and both have blown up after approximately 30 seconds of my arrival before i even start a hack. in the second for example i was the only person in system local chat so i dont think its a case of someone getting there before me. but i click the shortcut and click the 4 cans to target all of them. and go through and scan each one and when i turn on my mwd towards the first one i see with good loot they blow up on me.
13km in the first site. i made it 7km when it blew. a little under half way going 1000m/s in a gnosis with the mwd on. second site where i was alone in system i made it to the can but the red npcs had already spawned and i was 3-4 clicks into the can when it blew up and lost an ascendancy gamma blueprint.
just curious are the timers completely random and its luck of the draw or is there a bug with the timer or did i booboo and do something wrong that triggered it. ive been told mwd dont affect the spawn and in the past ive left one on while hacking the cans and nothing happens. but now the timers are just blowing up on me way too soon before im even within 5km of the can to hack it. |

Ghost site timers are supposed to activate when you enter the site grid. The timer has a random amount of time available up to 20 minutes before all hell breaks loose.
That's how it's supposed to be. Who knows what evil tweeks CCP has done to them lately.

Never done, is it possible the timer was triggered by some one else who warp in, then realized or suspected it was a ghost site and then warped out?
I know the timers are random but it seems unlikely that CCP would make them so short you had very little chance to even try a hack or even to get to the containers for that matter. According to the EvE U wiki and players I know that run these in low sec a cloaked ship will not trigger the timer. If that is the case then using a second character in a cloaked ship to decide which cans you want to hack and to provide a warp in point closer to that can might be a good idea.

It's possible for the first one. But the second one local was empty except me. From what I understand that should mean I was alone. I don't think cloaks stop you from showing in local. Unless they scanned it, warped to it and left system before I came to system and dropped my probes and scanned it. But that usually takes me a while. I scan everything down and save locations then go to nearest citadel and switch to whatever I need cause it's faster than station then warp to the bookmarks. Unless scanning it to warpability at 100% triggers it and the timer is running down in the 30 seconds it takes me to switch stuff and then another 30seconds to warp or something like that.
And I can't until i plex. Currently an alpha.
I mean it might seem like hyperbole or exaggeration but I'm talking Literally before I even get to the can. Like I said the red guys already showed on my way to the closest "good cans" in the second one I got within hacking distance but the timer was already up and it blew maybe 3 clicks in. It was already gonna blow whether I activated the analyzer or not. That's why I'm asking cause I've done them before a few times but I've never seen them do this and it was 2 in a row. |

There is a relatively large variation in your allotted time before the explosions begin, at least the last couple dozen or so ghost sites I have done. I've been able to clear a site completely and warped out before anything has happened and, on the other end of the spectrum, have had the first can go blooey halfway through the first hacking attempt. I have also noticed a tendency for sites to "bunch up" in timer length; i.e., found 3 or 4 sites that were either longer or shorter timed than average. However, a couple dozen samples probably doesn't count as a qualified pool of data.
To buck the popular trend, I began to Rage Start instead of Rage Quit.
...and every time I get another piece of Carbon, I know exactly what CCP is getting this Christmas.

I've run over a dozen Ghost Sites and usually can hack 2 cans before the timer runs out. I've gotten 3 cans a few times, have never been able to hack all 4 cans before the timer runs out. Course on that same aspect I've also had the timer run out right after hacking the first can.

They actually have ghost sites? I think I've seen 1 in lowsec out of every 1000 signatures scanned. |

Well, you have. Looks like scanning all four cans before even trying to get to one of them was the error. I know that the timer gives you at least time to get one can, but CCP is kind of cheeky and if you're unlucky plus sitting around scanning the cans instead of running the mini-game, your time will run out. |

I've done a ton of those.
The info that you have about 20 minutes is wrong.
It's not a new thing so there is a ton of info on this topic. Check out EVE University: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Ghost_Site
most important part:
Quote:When you enter the site a timer is started (unless you warp in cloaked). The time is random and not shown, but it seems that the more ships are in the site at once, the longer the timer (in practice, if running a site solo, you will generally have enough time to hack and loot 2 cans before the timer expires). Since time is of the essence, it is not generally recommended to scan the containers with a cargo scanner due to the limited time that is available before the rats warp in and make the cans explode
I can just repeat. Use a cargo scanner, get the best can and warp off. If you do this in nullsec, you'll find yourself getting good drops frequently (like the Blueprint copies that sel for 500m).
Best of luck! |
