I am trying to return to the game after a few years off and plan on focusing on hi-sec missions as it fits my available time better. I tried looking up some old information only to find a number of websites have disappeared or exist but may be way out of date to really be useful. I do remember that being uninformed in Eve almost guarantees losing ships so I have been looking over the forums to try and get up to date on changes that have occurred before launching into a bad situation. Does http://eve-survival.org still provide accurate information on individual missions? I was specifically looking for rough approximations of tank needed to not vaporize upon landing. The old rule of tank+gank needs to be greater that 1k seems off for the fits I see on the forum so far. Where do people go for fits? The sites I frequently used all seem to have folded. Is there something akin to E-Uni that provides assistance or information to mission runners? (my original thought upon seeing how much has changed was to rejoin E-uni but as they seems to average over 20 days a month at war I doubt I will have much opportunity to run missions) Figure that will do for a start and I am sure answers will lead to more questions.

Can you fly a Marauder? If so, you're all set...

I am able to fly almost everything except newish ships (saw some t3 destroyers i think?) and cant do T2 cruise missiles. Have reloaded EFT to compare some of my old fits but have run into some issues with changes to slots or drone bays or really anything. I liked mauraders when I cleared 100% of the site but I am not sure it is worth it to salvage everything, sell or reprocess it etc....love shooting the stuff and getting isk 15 minutes later tho... Would like to complete missions quickly without being so overtanked it takes me an hour but I also do not want to get thru the acceleration gate and go pop. |

Guns are where it's at - missiles and drones suck for different reasons. With Marauders you can run a mostly T2 fit and tank them fairly decently with only 2-3 modules. You only really need to spend 40-50m ISK on a Deadspace X-large shield booster or large armor repairer. Anything beyond that is really personal preference.
Start with overtanking your fit then pare it down as you get more comfortable flying it. A lot of the fits we discuss here are optimized for blizting, clearing or maximizing the "enjoyment" factor in L4 missions. They serve as good starting points, but as with everything aren't necessarily going to be everyone's cup of tea.
If you're interested in blitzing L4s and running Burner missions, Anize has an excellent guide I can't recommend enough. Be forewarned that you need a certain skillset, sizeable investment and that Burner missions are not forgiving in the least (win, lose - no draw).

I have to ask, why?
Why do drones and missiles suck?
I use missiles quite a bit, but I use them as kitting weapons or to give me range when I have no other choice. And drones dont seem like a primary damage form but a multiplier or an addition to your base form.

Missiles have lengthy lead times (particularly if your ship doesn't have any velocity bonus), horrible damage application against small and/or moving targets and lose a considerable amount of DPS to lost 'volleys in-transit'.
If you opt for sentry drones both damage and range vary considerably as well as requiring you to remain near them. If you opt for heavy drones you gain maneuverability while losing DPS to transit time as well as drones themselves (NPCs favor shooting drones).
The highest drone damage you can get is around 700 DPS and change while you can easily get over 1000 DPS with lasers, projectiles or hybrids.

Fascinating.
But with missiles, there is ways to bring the blast area down thus concentrating the damage, and reducing that size difference problem. And some rigg setups for missiles you can increase that damage cap even higher.
I use missiles a lot in PVE missions, and actually enjoy them more because I can have less actual setup dedicated to tank as I can stay out of range and speed tank a lot of potential damage. The missile damage keeps the NPC ships focused on me more than the Drones keeping them alive a fair bit longer. Not to mention the drones are expendable.
But I have noticed a great deal of speed in TTK vs missiles and Drones on NPCs when using brawl boats.
I did some tests between a Thrasher with Autocannons and a basic brawl speed build, and a Talwar long range missile kite build.
I can fly through most missions L2 or less in less than a couple of minutes in the Thrasher, but in the Talwar it could take me 10-15min.

Sure. There are ways to augment missiles... but they're still crap.

If you blitz/do burners then every weapon system has a place. Heck one of the two best blitzing BBs for lv4s is a missile boat.

eve survival has been accurate every time I've used it lately, seems like they added some combat storylines at some point
and there haven't been any large shifts that invalidate the old 1k rule (tank + gank = 1,000, minimum 300), but I don't remember seeing many conversations around here where it would be useful lately. Being in the SP range where that rule is relevant you are probably better off blitzing level 3s. Also with the ability to MJD you can get away with rather low tank. Most of my ships are at or even under the 300 tank mark, but I've hyper specialized into blitzing, plus I have a ton of SP and all my fits do 1100+ dps.
Re missiles: I actually like them on a barghest, and think they are passable on a raven hull, but I got bored of ravens years ago. Also the raven is pretty much capped ~1000 dps, and that is with perfect skills and 5% implants. The other thing that really makes me like turrets is that they have immediate feedback. if I try to fire 8 shots at a target and kill it in 5 I can use 3 guns to start shooting the next target. with missiles there is something of an all in with each volley. The machariel is my goto ship for missions at this point. I also have enough SP and isk that I don't mind having secondary ships for missions where the mach is weak (although since I moved on to blitzing I stopped running any of those missions so kinda a moot point).
This is my armor mach fit. It puts out a ton of dps to burst down anything that could be a threat, and has enough speed it can outrun any other threats. I use the MJD aggressively to jump into enemies, where many people use it to jump 100km away and snipe. I prefer to be at short range and use that face melting dps. I don't use this ship to run missions like worlds collide, so the tank isn't an issue. heck most of the time the npcs don't get through my shields. I have used it for some storylines and think I went into structure/low armor a few times, but it is a pirate bs and has a ton of hit points to soak up the damage so I don't mind. Also I typically have the MJD ready to jump out in those cases.

Saw the polarized fit and will likely make one but play safer for a short time.
@chainsaw few questions on that fit:
only 3 of 4 are RF gyro...any specific reason? doesnt make a huge difference but checking. Flying technique: you said you mjd into the pack for closer dps...i thought 800mm wouldn't track smaller ships if you get that close? Or are you swapping scripts from optimal to tracking for little ships? I guess you use the mwd sparingly to keep slightly ahead of what you are shooting? Do you need to use the cap booster lots or just if the s--- is hitting the fan? Is there a reason you chose gardes over say the gecko? I flew drone boats quite a bit and love the garde but back when it was 5 you dropped and the disadvantage of having to stay near or come back to grab them seems to counter the mach's advantage of flying about...havent really used the geckos but they seems to have crazy dps and can still launch 2 on the current system.
