Edited by: Hexxx on 24/04/2007 16:55:53 UPDATE: I'd like to get feedback on this draft, kudos are always appreciated (thank you by the way) but right now I want to make sure this workshop has a high standard of quality. Constructive feedback please! I will announce a date and time after I feel the outline is of a suffecient quality. Again, I know some of you contacted me before when I first proposed this idea, if anyone is interested in being part of the panel who hasn't contacted me already feel free too. I can't promise that everyone who wants to be on the panel will be, I'll discuss that later.
Ok guys, first of all, my apologies for the delay. I've been extremely busy with RL and running my own Corp. As some of you may be aware, the North has been very "busy" lately. Consequently, I'm aware this draft is a few weeks late.
There is no set date yet for the workshop. I would like feedback on this draft before we set a date.
There will also be drafts later on for Trading 201 and 301.
101 - Beginner 201 - Intermediate 301 - Advanced
Statement of Goals
The workshop is meant to introduce young traders to a few general concepts that are true for all areas of trading: 1) Opportunity Costs 2) Competition 3) Diversification 4) Taking the Long View 5) Supply and Demand (relevant EVE examples such as skillbooks in 0.0 stations) 6) How to read the market history to make trading decisions 7) Trading across Regions
All of these points will include examples/stories that illustrate the concept. I want to stress these are concepts and most are not dependent on a certain type of item. I'm trying to teach people to trade as opposed to teaching them to only trade modules.
Who should attend?
Younger or newer traders who feel like they're making progress but also feel frustrated because they feel like they could be doing better or simply people that are just starting to get into trading.
Who shouldn't attend?
Traders who make more than a billion a week. Unless you're curious about the class, this would probably be a waste of your time.
Will there be a log made public?
I gave this some careful consideration and I've decided not to make a log public. This is a workshop and not a lecture, there will be back and forth discussion between myself and the participants. Also, there will be a fee involved for those who wish to participate.
Fee?!?
There is a fee because I want people to feel invested in their education. The fee is 1 million isk. This is non-negotiable and payable just before the workshop begins. Clearly I'm not making money off of this. The fee is merely a token fee. If anyone really has a SERIOUS complaint about this, please post about it. I think it's reasonable but I've been wrong before (but only once! )
What about guest speakers?
I'll be contacting a few individuals who expressed interest to me previously. This includes some people from the Trader's Lounge as well as some indepdents. Maybe even some market celebs. All of these guest speakers and myself will be forming a "panel" to run the workshop.
So how long will it last?
My plan is about an hour of topic driven discussion (according to the outline of the workshop) with another hour of questions and answers.
Voice chat? In game chat?
An in game channel is my first choice since voice chat may get too noisey and chaotic with a dozen or so people all trying to ask questions at once. I'm soliciting opinion on this one though.

How about a combination of voice chat and text chat.
You could have the panel members broadcast through shoutcast or some such. |

Possibly. A combination may work. I'll look into some things.

Actually, given your first hand experience, you could provide an excellent example. Of course as we all know, skillbooks in 0.0 stations are simply an example of this concept and not the only situation in which it occurs.
p.s. I'm coming for your markets

Thanks Eefrit. =)
I was hoping to get you on a panel for a more advanced trading workshop at some point, hopefully I can rope you into it if this first workshop proves successful.

It is a great idea and I hope lot of budding traders will get a feeling for the fun of trading.
As a side suggestion, you may want to cover the basics about hauling and buy/sell orders management since you can spend a lot of time to move/buy/sell stuff at the beginning before you automate the whole process. ---------
Sadly I just make ISK, I don't print it. :(

I would like to attend this. I have been having nothing but problems trying to make the market work for me. Any word as to when this will occur? As a full-time student with a full time job I don't always have the flexibility I would like.

As a full-time consultant who flies 1,600 miles a week, I can appreciate your point. =)
There will be more than one 101 workshop. I think three might be the magic number here.
In terms of when, it will either be a weekday or a weekend and it will have to be in the evening (no matter what day it is). I'm in the central/eastern time zone in the US depending on what day it is.

I'd really think about having it in IRC due to ease of access. It shouldn't impede too much if it's a theoretical discussion, and since EVE doesn't have many collaborative tools for trading there's no real advantage to everyone having the game open at the same time.
Using EVE as a chat program is kind of like telling your friends to buy Ferraris so that you can drive down the autobahn and yell to each other out of the open windows. KISS
Sounds like a good idea, though. I'll be wishing you good luck from New Orleans.

If you'll let me, I'd love to sit in.
As for format, I find voice adds a lot. When I send emails, customers rarely listen. When I call--even if I only speak to the receptionist--things tend to get fixed within an hour or two.

Anyway, back on topic: great initiative here. It's nice to see someone offering a service like this in a notoriously secretive profession.

Looks great Hexxx. Glad to see it's taking off. I sure hope I can make to the workshop.
I can't really provide much feedback as I my trading experience is limited. However, I will say that I don't think you need to worry about the quality of the workshop. When I first read the outline, I got the impression that there is a lot of experience behind it; both in-game and out.
In regards to the topics, I think the major question left to answer is: Are there any other topics that belong in a beginner-level workshop?
Put in the same amount of thought and effort as you have so far and I'm sure it'll be a great workshop.

Great idea.
I'll create a mailing list before too long. Also, as an update, I'm going to start contacting speakers in the next day or two and I'm planning on having the first workshop mid-week the week after this one. So a tentative date around May 8th, 9th, or 10th.
I live in the US, Central Time Zone, expect something in the mid to late evening.
Once I have a solid date and some speaker committments, I'll share these with the community.
