I've come back from a 5-month hiatus and read about the Gala event. Mildly interested, I flew my Gnosis into low sec for some site-running and belt ratting.
I don't know what I did, maybe I ran an event site that this dude thought was his, but for the last 24 hours, some weird Russian dude has been stalking me from system to system. Whenever I'd jump into a new system, I'd rat for 15 minutes before this dude would turn up. Then I'd jump to another system, rat for a bit, Russian dude would turn up, and I'd leave and the cycle would repeat itself.
The loot today was particularly good. I managed to bag a Bargherst(?) and Orthrus BPC, half a dozen clone tags and a whole bunch of skins. Every time I finished off an event site, or killed a high-value rat, my heart would thump as Russian dude would pop up in local.
And this happened pretty much ALL DAY.
Finally, Russian dude blapped me at a gate just after downtime. The neighbouring system was offline so I was stuck at the gate for a few seconds. But it was enough for him to warp in and lock.
As I blew up, I had to ask myself, what kind of person would dedicate an entire day to killing an individual? (note: I didn't play for the whole 24 hours. I slept, had food etc, but whenever I logged back on, he'd be waiting in the same system as me).
That was so intense. I never experienced that in any other game. Wow! |

Russian players are an entirely different breed. They have an entirely different perspective on gaming. One, btw, which is extremely admirable in EVE. I wish we had more Russian input here on this forum.
They never give up, never stand down, are pathologically territorial, fanatically loyal, never forgive or forget, and will pursue you till the end of time and space, no matter the cost.
There is good, perpetually re-affirmed reason why "Never **** with the Russians" is a true rule in EVE.
The plus side is if you leave them alone, or approach them with friendly intent, they will most likely reciprocate.
If you manage to make friends with the Russians, you have a friend for life that will always have your back.

When I played as a ganker a few years ago I had a victim stalk me for over 2 months. He would literally spend his game time watching me, trying to kill the gank ships.

Life is pretty grim in Russia... Even today.
But its not that so much as they have a completely different gaming culture that has evolved in parallel to our own, far more hardcore than ours, or anyone on this board.

OP: I recommend you send that guy a GF mail. He will respect you for that and who knows what benefit that might lead to in your future. He spent a whole day hunting you down, and won. He deserves a GF. Ask ypurself, would ypu rather have such a person as a friend, or an enemy? ;) Loving human psychology I have found the Russians and the Eastern Euro players Ive met a very intriguing bunch. Your assessment is very spot on. The only thing I would add is that often they hate each other just as much as others. But its like poking a sleeping bear with them and it always made me grin.

Perhaps he was simply hunting you - a perfectly legitimate form of player interaction in Eve. The cat and mouse game can be intense, it can take a long time in game or if you are hunting game in the woods. It can be very satisfying when you succeed.
If he continues to stalk you, that might cross the line into griefing but there is nothing unusual about a hunt in Eve. |

Absolutely correct.
The perpetual feuds/vendettas between Russian corps/alliances internally is, thankfully, the reason they haven't united and rolled over the rest of us in EVE.
They have a different standard towards an occasional interloper, than one of their own that wrongs them. Though they will pursue and hunt an accidental unwitting guy like OP across EV, for days or months if necessary, that is nothing compared to what they will do against one of their own that wrongs them.
Afaik, there is no public accounting of what the combined assets of the "Russian Bloc" are, but regardless, it is utter folly to offer them a target to unify against, by poking too hard. Nobody wants the Russians, unified, enraged, running roughshod over EVE.
Let the bear sleep and it wont bother you.

East bloc IRL is a legal grey-zone, and due to the insular and isolated nature of both the Russian Bloc ingame, and their separation by language from this forum (though they do have their own) and CCP overall, its surely problematic.
Few of us outsiders dare venture there, or understand the language. Either to observe botting or understand the RMT actions.
If its any consolation/justification, it was probably mostly other Russian speakers that report them. Rus players dont want their space, or this game, wrongly exploited by others, even by other Rus, anymore than we do.
I expect CCP keeps an eye on the Russian board, Russian reports, and developments in Rus space, sufficiently.

I remember the big bot purge a few years back that CCP had stated that the most botters and banned accounts came from the US and Rus. Id have to really dig to find the pic and devblog though. It is unique in that aspect as even though some areas of Rus are quite rich many areas RMT is a very lucrative income compared to a real job.
For me its a very fun thing to study demographics.

I remember that period. It was one of the few times Rus showed up here with google trans posts expressing their outrage.
I cant factually speak to whether West or East Bloc botted/RMTd more, but I would suggest the West was more RMT, and the East was botting like mad. There was a number of internet RMT schemes of many types being run in English, especially in connection to Twitch. Whereas as I said above, East is so insular and isolated, that its hard to get a reading on whats happening (botting certainly was).
Anyways, that battle was fought, and won. Botting and RMT is now better restricted, for the good of us all.

Rus Bloc players will keep coming at you, even with only one remaining limb, having gnawed off the other 3 on traps. They just get angrier and more determined as a result.

Mearly a flesh wound
@Salvos other reply Yes one of the intriguing parts of Eves history was the start of that insular nature in Eve due to the Cyrillic client hack. I still remember the very old nature of the antagonism between West and East because of this. And as for the botting purge, yes it was a VERY needed thing in game regardless of who was responsible.

This is nothing, I have personally taken part in much more autistic cat and mice games.
You have a spreadsheet of players that might not even have logged in for years still on your list with notes on what they do and when you expect them to move their supercapital.
Then you do all the trades and forms like neutral cloaky unaffiliated alts as eyes and use locator agents on all his known characters to see if they are moving.
I also was very actively hunted myself a few years ago when Jihadswarm (Now known as CODE and Miniluv) had a campaign to hunt and exterminate all professional haulers in the game.
Hunting in this game is a lot of fun, both small and big game. |

I agree with Salvos, wish Russian players would comment here more. Feels kind of wrong to be discussing their general characteristics as a certain group, but they're not discussing them back. The RMT empires are predominantly Russian. Botting - Russian. Hacking and account exploits - definitely Russian. If it weren't for Serenity being on a seperate server cluster the Chinese and Russians would turn Tranquility into the Gong Show. The West (Europe/USA) is basically the end consumer of the majority of RMT. Banned accounts are probably an event split.
Russian players are some of the most ruthless pricks in EVE - a reputation they've worked hard for. But hey, when EVE is a primary source of RL income you're bound to be a bit touchy...
