I was just thinking, say someone's account is perma-banned (y'know, like a macrominer or something), what actually happens to the account itself? Does it get deleted after so long, seeing as nobody's really going to suddenly contest a ban after 3 month, or is the account left alone to fester on the server for all eternity (or until the servers are closed permanently - hey, everything dies)?
Just curious. And that if they weren't deleted, I was just thinking that it'd be such a waste of server space, as well as the ISK and items that those accounts have.
(What can I say - my brain farts these sort of thoughts every now and then)

You honour your name young padawan... but since CCP's said quite a few times that no accounts are deleted. And since storing account data takes up virtually no server space, and absolutely no performance, there's very little point in deleting...
And since the assets on most accounts that have been banned is probably a bit tainted, I dont' want their stuff either. ;-D

Can I slap you for that name comment?
Anyways, OK, so they take up next to no space, but depending on how many accounts are banned, the collective size of said accounts would still be pretty herr-ooge (huge), right?

Keeping them on the server still wouldn't add up to much, and it prevents someone from starting a new account with the same name.

not as huge as all the trialaccounts that havenever been deleted over 4 years, I am fairly certain thatall these accounts must cause lag somehow.

It would make sense that the sheer number of items on perma-banned accounts would eventually cause some database lag...and contribute to the running out of database IDs problem they had a while back.
for performance, they are prolly getting to the point that the various DB tables were too big to stay cached....hence they moved to the RAMSAN, still makes you wonder if a little cleanup would not go a long ways.

I think they are deleted.
I knew a guy 03 character who got bored of eve and sold his character on ebay. CCP found out and the character got banned (with the account I suppose). But a quick check in "People and Places" shows the character name but as a 06 noob in npc corp
So me thinks they are deleted

Permabans are sometimes overturned, so it doesn't make sense to delete the accounts. At least, not immediately.

Figured that, but who would actually try to contest a permaban or continue contesting it several months on?

I'm certain they don't actually delete the data. The logistics of full removal of a user is probably one reason why they haven't done so, coupled with the fact that a user takes up little space.
They very likely do what's called a "soft delete", where the row remains in the database, but has a column or identifier associated with it that indicates it's banned, disabled, or inactive.
In terms of space, the actual data required for holding a character is minimal when you think about it.
I'm guessing the actual user is less than 400 bytes per row- username + several integers linking the user to their race, bloodline... creation date/time, of course, a few other chunks of housekeeping data. Let's call it 1K.
Then there's the user's skills- which would be a combination of integer references to trained skills plus levels in those skills... so maybe 1K there if you have a lot.
Another few K for your attributes, implants and so forth. And a few K for links to items you have, their location ID (my guess is that internally the DB sees a station hangar the same way it sees a ship carghold) and amount per stack.
We're only up to about 50K or so max, but just say 100K for the sake of padding estimates.
So let's say that every character's data is about 100K to store it all. You could put 1 million characters in one trillion bytes of storage, or about a terabyte (1000 GB).
I'm making these numbers up- well, deriving them from guesses based on experience and observation of the EVE client in action- but I would venture to guess that they're not far off in terms of orders of magnitude. When you consider how much space is really needed for the rest of EVE, that kind of storage is chump change. There's off the shelf SANS with 100 times that amount of storage for less than 7 thousand dollars US.

Answer from kieron on a related question (deleting of chars)
linkage
I can imagine that saving some char info requires hardly nothing compared to all the database transactions that have to be saved (production, research, market, evemails, ...)

Permabans have been overturned and people still remain on the servers on their last warning, due to GM misunderstanding or escalated petitions you can have your ban overturned as long as you've got a damn good excuse.

I think the Tech II BPO's got reseeded. And maybe the very rare ships got put back into the pool also. But the characters, isk, and all their stuff will never get used again.

Hmmm, toons really aren't ever deleted it looks like. I just looked up my original toon from release, he is still hanging around the database (though his employment history is nuked now). He was only active for about 3 months or so before my computer blew up and I took about a year break. I never thought to check to see if he was still around. I'd imagine though that if he's been kept around for 3 years 9 months and 13 days in Deep Core Mining that the others are still there, locked up tight but persistant in the database.
