For different aspects of EvE there may also be a (small) difference in how you want to use you'r MTU. For example, when missioning, personally i'm not interested in all wrecks, just the ones that contain loot and / or medium+ sized ones. This is usually also the case when ratting (cosmic anomalies). When on special events, like the Guardian's Gala, one might only just be interested in the wreck of the last pirate, as, in this case, this is the only one containing (valuable) loot. I've missed one or two skins because somebody warped in on me when I was on the last pirate, and they scooped the loot before I could get to it while my MTU was happily realing in the other wrecks.
So, at times it felt like something was missing from the MTU, when suddenly it came to me. The ability to assign the next target that the MTU will go for ! This might be done by having a wreck selected / targetted, then right click / radial menu, and the option "Next target" or something like that is in the menu. This would always just be a single target, just like the Warp To. You can chage it as much as you want, it will just remember the last one. If the MTU is on the targetted one, only then will it remember a new one if you assign it. Obviously, if you don't assign anything, it will be business as usual for the MTU.

What you're looking for is called a "tractor beam". They are already in the game, and they are pretty well balanced as is, including when fit onto ships with and without bonuses, and the MTU.

The MTU is purposefully inefficient because it doesn't take up a module slot, just some cargo space, if you want something more efficient then fit your ship with a tractor beam and use that. |

Indeed, mtu is deliberately dumb because it is automated. If you want control or something more efficient you're meant to fit a tractor beam yourself.

True that.
I've considered a tractor beam, but for some reason, the boats I prefer to fly don't have an extra utility high slot, only weapon hardpoints. And I prefer not to give up dps for such a utilty. Also, I usually need distance when ratting, so I would not be in range after a kill right away, so that doesn't solve the problem of getting to the loot faster before others might scoop it up either.

So either take the hit and use the MTU with less efficiency, or reship to a noctis or salvaging destroyer. The MTU is working as intended.
Or just leave the MTU there and come back 10 minutes later hoping it hasn't been blown up. |

Such are the drawbacks for flying alone in a lightly tanked sniper boat.
Bring friends, fly tougher ships, fly in quiet systems or do some combination of the three!

I'm just ecstatic that we even have MTUs in the game...
I am currently away, traveling through time and will be returning last week.

OP could also train into a Marauder, which has plenty of range, three Utility highs, and is quite a good mission boat.
Other good options include the Machariel, Rattlesnake, Bhalgorn, and Nightmare. All can mission effectively and have utility high slots that could be used for a Tractor Beam. |

- The MTU works as intended and it's great, but that doesn't mean there can't be changes.
- A noctis would still be much more efficient at tractoring / salvaging even with this little somethin' somethin' added to an MTU.
- Reshipping to a salvaging boat doesn't solve the problem of hijackers, if it's only seconds of being late for the loot.
- Same goes for a tractor beam with only 500m/s. Probably won't be fast enough. I've had instances where the MTU did do the trick, when someone was going to check on / steal my loot but they couldn't catch up with it. But those instances are always when there is only one wreck/container of interest, and the MTU is on it right away.
- Imo, this little bit of control does not make the MTU to OP.
