Hello.
What is a good ship to buy after the frigate? Gallente. I aim to continue mining moving onto manufacturing & trading(i think).
So far (although i do seem to be in the minority reading these boards) i do actually enjoy mining....love the chilled out pace man.... ps - why is my avatar not showing?

Hey, if you are serious about mining head for the mining barges. You can be in a Retriever (the tier 2 barge, I think, not sure) in a few days and that can really guzzle in the ore.
You're avatar will appear in a few days, I suspect, so fear not! :)
All the best with your mining career, if you enjoy it, who gives a *bleep* what others think :).

PvPers love to troll the forums and talk about how awesome they are, so the numbers are a bit skewed here. The industry and economy in EVE is pretty awesome (however it is nothing like crafting) so there are plenty of like minded types in-game.
I do a mix of both personally.
Another good ship for mining is the Exequoror, if your skills are too far away for the mining barge. It doesn't get a mining bonus, but it has a huge cargohold. ----------------------------------------------------

If your plans are to focus on mining operations, Farrellus' suggestion is good: In the short term, train up Gallente Cruiser and purchase an Exequror. They're on the market for about 3 million isk and only require GC 1 to fly. (It already has a good-sized cargo hold, and each additional level of GC adds 10%.) For me, its four high slots will fit two Miner IIs and 2 EPS Gaussian miners, and three low slots are used for cargo expanders (even MORE room!). It also has room for five light drones, which are plenty for dealing with rats in highsec.
After that, as Kua advises, train for Mining Barges and get yourself into a Covetor. You'll also want to train for Industrials and work your way up the Iterons to haul your ore. -----

I wouldn't go for a Covetor first up. Try going for a Retriever first thing after the Exequror. Retrievers cost 5-6 million ISK and they have a a yield of at least 1.5 x the cruiser. Plus the mining cycle is 3 minutes rather than 1 minute. Avoid the Procurer barge (the cheapest one) which is generally considered useless. Covetors can fit 3 strip miners rather than 2 (on the Retriever) but they are expensive (20 million ISK or so?) and they require more training.

Mining = Barges. From barges to exhumers. Drone skills and other mining-related industrial skills are a must.

"more training" may be one of the biggest understatements I've seen since I started playing Eve.
Retriever: Barge 3, Astrogeo 4 Covetor: Barge 5, Astrogeo 5
Astrogeo 5, and Barge 5 combined will take you about 35 days with well trained learning skills. With average skills you can add about a week to that.
Get a Retriever, and mine while you train for a Covetor. By the time you can fly one (Covetor) you'll probably be able to afford a Hulk.

William is correct. I finally purchased a retriever last night and was happy of my accomplishment. However I checked EveMon this morning and calculated that with the appropriate learning skill learning, the soonest I'd be driving a Hulk (the ultimate miner) is in 53 days. And thats non-stop skilling. Astrogeology 5 is slated to take 16 days but Mining Barge 5 is slated to take 27 days
Its a while but based upon what I read the hulk really is a beast of a miner and can make you some awesome ISK. Definitely something to shoot for IMO (thats what Im goin for at the moment) ----------------------------------------- Don't submit to stupid rules Be yourself and not a fool Don't accept average habits Open your heart and push the limits |

Hi Kabe
Mining is Kewl and allows me to talk to the kids and be involved in family life while making ISK. I currently fly a Covettor but was lucky enough initially to have chose to fly Caldari ships (because i liked missile graphics and sound). Caldari have the best mining cruiser in the Osprey.
That said however, the best move is to get into a Retriever. The extra skill in Astrogeology alone raises your yield as well as the upgrade to using strip miners.
Once in the retriever you should kill up straight away to use a Mining Upgrade I. You should train mining uprades to about 3 or 4 depending on your Electronics skill. Pre-req is Mining 4. To fit the mining upgrade to the Retriever you will need a good named co-processor. I believe the photonic co-pro does the job.
Once you have the mining upgrade fitted you should then skill up to use strip miner II's and tech I mining crystals for veld, scord, plag, pyrox. pre-req skills for these are: Science 3, Refining 4 and Industry 1.
Right, since you are Gallente you have probably started training Gallente Industrial. Realy the Gallente Indies suck until you get to the Iteron Mark V which is the biggest mining hauler in the game.
That said, it is better to get a friend or corpmate to haul for you than to troop back and forth to a station everytime your hold fills up. Jet-can mining has it's own problems (ore thieves in busy systems) but the savings in time and therefore overall amount of ore mined outweighs the risk. With a corpmate hauling you keep the amount in the Jet-can very small anyway.

On your way to the barges, I'd get the Vexor instead of the Exequeror. Especially if you're jetcan mining, like a good miner should be. Train those drone skills to take advantage of it's drone mining yield bonus. It can do pretty well, you can squeeze 4 Miner II lasers on it with CPU upgrades, and those drone skills will serve you well in the future defending your Retriever and better barges from rats. The Vexor also makes a really nice drone boat for running L2 missions, if you're so inclined.
5 Hobgoblin II drones are wicked fast and can handle any high-sec rats quick enough to keep them from scratching the paint on my Retriever. Takes awhile to train, but then... I'm not a dedicated miner anymore. Would have been, but after 2 corp wars, I've diversified my skill set.

As a quick fix for your hauling needs train up Minmatar Industrial and get a Mamouth. Fit it with 4 cargo expanders and 4 giant secure containers and you'll have a massive hauler which takes only a fraction of the training time and isk cost of training for the top Gallente industrial. I did it and have never regretted it. That said I'm only a casual miner (I agree it's a relaxing way to play the game if you have other stuff to do) so if you're taking it seriously you might want to go the route of joining a mining corp or holding out for an Iteron V.
Also look up Halada's mining guide. It has everything you could want to know and it's written in stages so that it starts simple and gets more in depth as you get a feel for the game.
