What's the difference between (range within) and (falloff) ? |

^ TLDR : Optimal is max range to still get a 100% damage hit. After Optimal damage trails off to 0 over a certain distance, Falloff is half way along that "falloff" or 50% loss of damage.
You should read the link tho, even though it's long.

I understand optimal and falloff for turrets but these terms are also used for non turret modules which is what I am confused about. |

The hitchance still applies, if you dont "hit" with ewar or scanner effect it does nothing. |

Why don't you test it with a friend then? Have a friend in a maulus scan res/target lock damp you at max falloff then slowly get closer to you to see what happens. (Hint: The effects get stronger as he approaches optimal)

Yes I would guess that effect falloff is the range where the effect of the module is at 50% and an additional distance equal to the difference between the optimal and the falloff is the range where the effect is zero. However that wasn't my question

Normal operating range: optimal + 1/4 falloff and no further than optimal + 1/2 falloff.
Beware that the turret mouse-over shows optimal and optimal+falloff, so you want to be in the middle of that.
Lasers have almost falloff, so they are used within optimal, close to optimal. Hence crystal changes are instant.
Optimal: within this range, chance to hit is 100% if both ships are not moving.
Falloff: Chance to hit decays the further into falloff. At optimal + 1x falloff, chance to hit is around 50% (overall DPS is around 30%). At optimal + 2x falloff, chance to hit is around 1%. Hence consider optimal + 1/4 falloff best (around 80% DPS). |

Although whether 80% is more than or less than enough depends entirely on what you are shooting and what you are shooting it with but 80% does make you feel better than 30%

However that wasn't my question Also it doesn't hold true as a grapple web has an optimal of 1km and a falloff of 8km should mean it has zero effect at 16km but it affects ships out to 24km ? no effect is 31km (optimal + 3x falloff) for a t2 stasis grappler.
a better discussion on falloff than what I can type off the top of my head here: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=515376&find=unread9
