Dear CCP,
It has come to my attention that the old scanning interface is no longer available on the test server.
This distresses me and some other people I play with greatly.
I will make my point&plea right now - PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THE OLD SCANNING INTERFACE AND LET US HAVE THE OPTION TO CHOOSE WHICHEVER ONE WE LIKE. CUSTOMIZATION IS GOOD. FORCED UI CHANGE IS BAD.
Now, for the rant:
Some of us are UNSATISFIED with some of the arbitrary changes made to the probe scanner and we would prefer to have the option to play the way we like. Since this option has already been implemented (a while ago), I don't see why you would remove functionality that already exists while not harming anyone.
The new probe scanner is clunky, its design (button placement, style of interface elements) is, simply put, fixing what's not broken (why would you randomly move a button from left to right or vice-versa?).
I understand that some of these changes are sensible to some, and that some enjoy them, People have told me they would rather not be able resize probe formations just by using the mouse, and while I personally love using the mouse, I can see where they're coming from. Preferences differ. But you know, you don't have to pick a side here. Just introduce a "lock mouse probe formation resizing" button instead of FORCING one option on a group of players that doesn't like it.
When you can give us a CHOICE (as you prudently did by allowing us to use the old map and the old scanning interface, that was honestly a good move and I commend it), don't randomly remove it. Do anything you like with the new UI, but please, let us who are unsatisfied with it use the old one. It's already there. You don't have to bend over backwards to implement it.
I promise you, getting a fancy Prometheus-control room-like scanning screen will not help you retain or attract more players. But removing convenience which player enjoy will help you lose them.
Functionality needs to come first. Some of us, for better or worse, have to interact with these UI elements for hours every day. There is no sensible business explanation as to why you would want to make your customers less comfortable by removing features.
Yeah, people who never scan will look at it and say it's cool, but the majority of players clearly see problems with it. Scanning makes up for a huge portion of gameplay in wormhole space, so much so that people use dedicated, paid-for characters to do it fast and easy. It's an incredibly important gameplay mechanic and introducing big changes to it affects the players.
All that said, I believe you should strive for MORE UI CUSTOMIZATION and not LESS. EVE is an incredibly complex game. It attracts a variety of player personalities with different wants and needs. It makes no sense to pretend this is not the case and treat EVE like a mobile app that needs to have a shinier new interface so that other potential customers spot it and want to try it.
Choice is good. Don't take away choice. |

If CCP doesn't want to witness a Reaper drone "accident" on an office building I suggest they keep the properly working d-scan where it is.
JEEBUS ******* CHRIST why you make me threaten you with real violence instead of listening to those whom pay:
- your rent
- your bills
- your food
- your gas
- your furniture
- your misses
- your offspring
- your groceries
- your clothes
- your holidays
We can always stop paying. When you have a 40.000 alpha clone server for a month, will you listen then?
