So there I was, in wormhole space, and I had a little easy-kill in my sites. Should have been about 10m ISK in dropped loot from another Capsuleer.
I lock her up, and get about 3 minutes of her just sitting there.
So I go 'f1 f1' and... Nothing happens.
My Auto-targeting missiles do not fire. Apparently they can't see her. Hello? I have a Target Lock.
The thing is this bug has been there for 2 years that I can see now ( possibly longer ). Why have these missiles not been fixed in all that time?
They're supposed to take orders from you, but if you are jammed they should still keep on firing at viable targets.
In reality they just don't/won't fire.
This is a big deal. Unreliable guns get you killed.
Or are they PvE only?
Can someone please enlighten me? |

1. you don't need a lock
2.you need to be fired upon
3.you need to be in range
If you are just sitting there and lock a target and the target does not attack you they do nothing.....this is what they are designed for...attacking without lock the nearest target that is attacking you....
It' useless to spam f1 if you are not attacked...... |

They used to work like smart bombs, they were more than happy to let loose. But not exactly target your target, they would target anything they felt like. Drones, structures, wrecks, fleet members, other junk. Basically anything other than what you wanted them to target. |

Auto targetting missiles are only useful if you are being attacked but cannot fire back becuase you are jammed by ECM for example. In your wormhole scenario you should have used regular non auto targetting missiles and they would have fired. |

The posters above me have it right. Locking stuff doesn't matter, Auto Targeting missiles attack the nearest thing attacking (red boxing) you.
And they are more useful and more versatile in PVE than PVP, they are great for dual boxing PVE content.
For PVE, they attack ships gun/missile turrets and overseers of the same faction and 'meta type'.. This means that if you are in a dead space area and a Deadspace Guristas NPC attacks you, those FoF missiles will fire at ANY Deadpspace Guristas NPC. however, in that same scenario, they will not shoot at any "Asteroid" Guristas NPC unless those NPCs also agress. This can be see by warping to an anomaly in any space and letting the rats shoot at you (you can then use Auto target missiles against hem), then warp to a belt, you will notice that you can't use the auto target missiles against the belt rats until they agrees you.
For pvp against real players, it works totally different. Auto Target Missiles will ONLY attack the individual attacking you. So if you got 5 Goonswarm dudes on grid and one of them shoots you, your Auto-target missiles will only fire against the one agressing against you, it won't attack 'anything that belongs to Goonswarm" like it would attack anything belonging to an npc faction.
Which is a shame, because they really should just attack Goons
EDIT: Oh and let me add, I did the same thing you did OP. I thought Auto target missiles worked different and almost lost a ship.
I have a Raven with auto target cruise missiles (and other kinds of missiles, the Auto targets were for when I got jammed by npcs, it was guristas null sec). Me and a buddy were in an anaomaly and this neutral dude comes in and starts shooting at my buddy.
I didn't think I had time to switch, so I target painted the intruder and tried to fire my auto target missiles. My light drones did attack the target, but my auto targets kpet firing at NPCs even though the real player was closer. I was all like "this has to be a bug".
It wasn't, they bad guy hadn't fired at me or aggressed me in any way. As soon as he point a warp disruptor on me, my missiles started shooting at him, and he eventually ran away without being able to kill us.
but those missiles not working like I thought they did was a prime "pucker moment" for me lol. |

The abovementioned is rarely ever a problem, though. As everyone knows we are F1 monkeys, and if one of us redboxes you, everyone else will as well, and therefore all Goons on grid will be a valid target for FoF Missiles. Should that not happen at some point, then we failed to focus fire and should not be a danger anyway. |

Not a bug. Don't use FOF missiles for PVP.
GÇ£Some capsuleers claim that ECM is 'dishonorable' and 'unfair'.
Jam those ones first, and kill them last.GÇ¥
