Should I take the Kestrel fro speed or the Merlin for extra med slot and armor?
Also very new to game and a equipment list would be nice...can spend maybe a 1-2mil isk......only have 8mil isk and saving for Drake....have a Caracal right now....

I like to use the rocket kessie, but be ready to lose a lot of them while your learning.

The Kestrel obviously does the best damage of the two, especially if you have more skills in missiles, like most newish Caldari players. It does however have a weakish tank compared to the Merlin. I've had most success with the Kestrel in solo-PvP/piracy as a new player, however because of my lacking gunnery skills i haven't really flown the Merlin all that much.
Keep in mind that in most people's opinion Caldari ships in general are the worst for solo PvP/piracy period. Of course we've got ships such as the Drake, the Crow and the Kestrel/Merlin which really shine in some situations, however Caldari ships are in general more suited for PvE situations (missions, ratting) or med-large gang/fleet-PvP (the Rokh is an excellent fleet ship and the Caracal and the ECM ships are brilliant gang support ships) than small roaming gang/solo PvP compared to Gallente or Minmatar ships. --- And now for something completely different... |

Kessy>Merlin imo. You're gonna run into fitting problems with the Merlin, it does less damage, costs more, and requires more skills.
Good setups:
4x rocket launcher scram, web, med extender PDS, shield relay.
Or
4x rocket launcher scram, web, whatever (web or scram probably) MAPC, 400mm plate.
Or (Not sure if I got this one right, haven't used it in a while):
4x rocket MWD, scram, small extender 2x PDS

Kessie, tbh.
3x Rockets, 1x Small Nos AB, 7.5k scrambler, Small Shield Booster II Damage Control, MAPC if you need grid, BCS if you have CPU to spare
It's pretty unorthodox, but boy howdy does it get the job done. --=-- I turned off "show corp/alliance" because, to be frank, I'm ashamed of them. They'll be turned back on when I'm somewhere more suitable for someone of my talents. |

Edited by: Psorion on 08/05/2007 12:44:18 The guys is new so his skills for using Things like T2, MAPC, etc are probably lacking. I agree the Kestrel is likely a better fit unless your Frigate and gun skills are trained up.
I agree with the Rocket Kessies 4x Rocket launchers Web / Warp Scram / Small Booster or Xtender Ballistic Control / Armor Plate (largest that fits) or Damage Control
2-3 of your mates, choose targets carefully, orbit at 5km and fire away. (better to attack gunships that can miss than missleships.)
Rockets over missles for Shortrange setup (tackling) and Rockets have a faster rate of fire than missles.
Use EM until for first salvo then Explosive to finish hull/structure

Rocket kessie.
Very tough and it can dish out pretty quickly. Only issue is the weak tank. Once the shields are down - the armour is paper thin. In a rocket kessie, one also needs to get close to your target to ensure a consistent DoT with rockets.
Close = vulnerable to NOS, blasters etc.
Still, a good ship to learn PvP in.

So, fire one salvo of EM to take down shield's some, then open up with explosive? Or take down shield's completely, then switch to Explosive?
I suppose you really want to have fast reloading skills with that plan?

To be honest, I'd only use Kinetic rockets unless I saw that I wasn't doing any appreciable damage with them.
Shields are weak against EM, and armor is weak against explosive. Kinetic and Thermal are good middling resistances.
Liang My opinions are my own, and do not in any way reflect the beliefs of my corp/alliance. |

I disagree. A rifter is a kick-ass SOLO PVP / Pirate frigate. The kestrel and punisher too.

Yeah! You can kill cruisers which have 20k of loot! That will make you rich - no really it will.

Is it all about becoming rich though? If you find pirating in a frigate fun - and many people do indeed - you can do that until you have skills and ISK enough to advance into the next ship be it a Thorax, Rupture or whatever.
And anyway you probably earn much more than 20k per ship kill. Also, if you do a few succesfull ransoms of a miner for example, you'll have money to buy yourself a cruiser in no time. --- And now for something completely different... |

Well, Kessie does have bonuses to Kinetic, but where I am the best is EM/Thermal damage. I would load 2 launchers with EM and 2 with thermal .. See what does the most damage once u get past shields. Likely the fight will be over before u can reload. Damagecontrol helps u live a little bit longer (saved me a few times). Armor plates on Caldari ships are not a bad idea.. GL

It probably will be fun but some noobs seem to get the impression they can go out and own everything and become rich only to have smash of reality and ending up in a clone station.
