I was thinking about it, and excluding the high cost of a carrier and the consequent risk of losing it, Carriers fill the role of frigates fifteen times over, and can act as logistics ships. (ironically, carriers are better at logistics than logistics ships since they can survive long enough to not get instantly destroyed) If the devs want small ships to be more useful, why is there a ship that can make two other classes of ships obsolete?

So a carrier can travel at 6000 m/s, instalock and web smaller ships and tackle larger ones while not getting hit?
What is this frigrate role you are thinking of? 1500 DPS?

I actually find Carrier make frigates rock more. All you need is a good lock, speed and a 20k scramble to fighter bomb.

Edited by: Acinonyx Jubatus on 08/05/2007 05:41:57 Frigs and carriers go hand in hand, they don't make each other obsolete as they still perform their own roles...
Would you send a carrier a few jumps ahe- oh wait, you can't use gates...
That and carriers need a frig with a cyno to even move.
Also forgot something kinda important, fighters suck at hitting frigs.

carriers do not replace fighters.
in 95% of fights I would much rather rely on 6 corpmates in frigates than a carriers fighters.
the major reasion being that the ai controling your drones in this game is at best absent minded and usualy flat out retarded. to get my drones to do what I want I usualy have to tell them to do it 5-6 times, even then they usualy just wander off after a few seconds.

The frigite with a scrambler on the carrier, orbiting it at some crazy speed to outrun the carriers drones/fighters.
Tell me, who do you think will win? The frig can always warp out so he has lost nothing, and even if he dies, big deal, frigs are ten a penny. While holding down this carrier, a the frig's friends can come in to help.

Um.... logistics ships.. maybe. I see where you are coming from there, except that you can buy roughly 20 logistics ships for the price of 1 carrier. But frigates ? Please tell me how a carrier can take a frigates role.

I was thinking about living under water, excluding the fact I can't survive by breathing water, do you think it could be fun?

Depends how many carriers you've got, if you have 60 then yes they make frigates obsolete, and all other support for that matter because there is absolutely nothing you can do to hurt them.
You might not be able to kill anything but you can sure as hell ignore it and go about your business.

WTF? Frigates absolutely cripple carriers. They can't kill the carrier tank, but there is almost nothing a carrier can do against frigates that can dampen it to hell, and kill off the fighters while staying out of smartbomb range.

where are you buying logistic ships
Oneiros (gallente logistics) go for roughly 20 mil. Figure pimping it out with nice mods gets you up in the 80-100 mil range total for ship + gear. So 20 of them would be 1.6 to 2 bil. Thanatos + mods + fighters + drones = roughly 2 bil if you buy the carrier on the market as opposed to getting one on the cheap.
