I don't understand why we are not allowed to issue a command to launch our PI materials to the Customs Office without being in the system for that planet and in space.
Is this a purposeful design decision? And if so why?
And if that reason no longer seems relevant or useful can we please get the ability to launch PI materials up to the customs office without being told we need to be in the PI system and in space to do so.

It is quite deliberate. It forces you to visit the systems where your colonies are located giving other players an opportunity to "interact" with you. It also makes it more difficult for you to use the POCO storage to extend harvest intervals. |

I would say 'YES' it is intentional.
Here's the why: PI is pretty much a passive way to make isk. It's already passive - all you have to do is be in system to swap stuff and go to the planet to pick it up. I'm not seeing how that isn't good enough. It's passive income it isn't ultimately lazy income. Get in a ship and jump there and get it.
The big reason would be that you have some skin in the game. Remote PI ops would mean that you could fly a covert whatever deep into some place you don't belong, set up a single planet to slowly produce P4, fire up the production and only have to come back once in a very great while to pick up the full customs or silo or whatever bucket of stuff. Customs offices and the 'in system' mechanics are specifically there to provide interaction points between players. Your idea is the opposite of that.
If you want to improve PI, get rid of the repetitive clicks, but don't remove player interaction points. |

So this doesn't seem like a particularly good reason to me then.
The POCO can hold significantly (3.5x) more than a single launch from a full launch pad. An Epithal can hold nearly 2x the storage capacity of a POCO.
If you're running PI at or near your home planet (as I do) and happen to be conducting operations on the other side of New Eden, then I'm forced to travel all the way back simply to launch PI to the Customs Office. Seems rather silly. And it's terribly annoying.
And it makes little to no logical sense (immersion wise). If I can remotely issue commands for everything else PI related, then why not the ability to remotely issue a command to launch to the customs office?

PI is overdue for an overhaul but I doubt it will be looked at this year. The devs have a full plate. When the overhaul does come expect it to reward active gameplay - exactly the opposite of what you're asking for! |

You mean like having to more regularly uproot your facilities and place them around the planet. More power-grid requirements for links so you can't place extraction heads too far from your factories and so you have to pull everything up and move if you want to get the best sources of raw materials, which will move around the planet frequently?
Yes, indeed that would reward more active game play AND make people fall in love with PI all over again.
In any event, so long as they allow you to schedule launches remotely that's cool. They could even charge additional tax to do so, if they want to encourage you to trek all the way there simply to say "Hey can you launch that stuff to the customs office now? Oh I see, I get the 'special' discount for telling you 'in person'. *cough* Sure thing, anything to save an ISK"

You bring up a good point. You shouldn't be able to issue remote commands to anything PI related. |

AND you should have to be at the planet. Uncloaked.
And without any active EHP modules running as they would prevent proper communications to the surface.

Value of PI is determined by supply and demand on player run markets. Supply is essentially infinite - there are tens of thousands of planets in New Eden. The only constraint is player willingness to harvest the material.
If CCP made PI easier - more people would do it, increasing supply on the market and reducing the price. If they require more active, riskier gameplay, fewer players will participate and the value of the harvest will increase.
On the demand side, the new structures use a lot of PI. Prices have doubled since the Citadel expansion. I think there is a saturation point for structures - the game really doesn't need that many if trusted landlords emerge - it's easier and a lot cheaper to use someone elses structure. PI would take a big hit if that happens! |

I do think that is the point, they want PI to be something that requires interaction in the system occasionally, not just when the customs office is entirely full up.
