Is there a steep learning curve? I'm coming from WoW...but looking for something different. I don't mind a time-consuming game...but a super complex game might be thought to break into?
Regardless, this game looks intriguing. |

I mostly just log in and shoot stuff, and try to keep it reasonably simple. Just beware that bigger doesn't mean better. Sure I like battleships the most, but they come with a bunch of downsides that smaller ships don't have, a properly prepaid smaller ship could potentially kill my BS without too many problems. And a gang of small ships would probably tear me to pieces. The shooting part is pretty straight forward although it can get complex as you start to think about bigger engagements. If you are interested in it you should be able to learn it, if not you can always try something else. Joining a corp and playing with other people really speeds up learning too.
Maybe you would rather be an industrial tycoon or something. Most of that will be self learning as most industrialists won't want to give away their trade secrets. Lets just say my cost accounting class was super easy as I leaned how to calculate almost all that stuff playing spread sheets in space, I mean eve, yea eve!

You'll probably quickly hear stuff like "EvE is life" while playing. It's a sandbox. You can build castles (be an industrialist etc), smash others castles (be a PvP warlord etc) or hang out in the bushes naked with a calculator (er... I guess that's the spreadsheet bit?).
Do whatever you want. It's as complex as you want to make it, just like life.

The quick answer before the getting to know how it works the quit because of the boring and long drag this game have. Everything takes time and let be honest, many people don`t have this patience for that. Quick game play is al the want. Travel from A to B let me say 20 jumps can be a pain for many players. |

Self starters thrive under this environment. Theres a lot of information online but people are generally lazy to learn outside of paid or school environments where theres a specific goal or understanding of reward. You will never stop learning new things in Eve. EVER! If you dont you are either doing the same thing every day or you arent logging in anymore.
Dig, learn, grow. Its hard enough in real life let alone in a virtual world. Keep pushing and never give up, ever. Like life failure is only an illusion in your head. Everything you learn from, everything you grow from.
So in these respects Eve is like life.
But also like life its stupidly simple. Either you are making isk or you are killing things, sometimes both. So grab some friends, some beers and find something fun to "waste" some time on until you choose to log off and reenter the real world.
Have you heard anything I've said?
You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?
That's right.
Had to end sometime.

Hmmm, I must not have being playing EvE then.
One of the most enjoyable things I did in-game was dumping metal scraps in a system under enemy control just so they knew I was there. It's hardly profitable ISK wise, but salt is a currency, and the amount of salt they wasted complaining about metal made them even more enemies.
For the OP, some people just sit around socialising in EvE, I figure they did this because facebook is one of the worst computer games ever. Find what you like doing in-game, and do that. The whole spreadsheet thing is just a reference for the number crunching involved in PvP and economic warfare. I personally preferred running a non-profit used lingerie fetish club in-game and educated people about the merits of raw fish.

EVE is the most immersive and rewarding online game ever, period. It is also one of the most frustrating, and at times, boring online game ever. You don't "play" EVE, you live it, and just like real life, it has its ups and downs.

In short: yes, it is complex in psychological and intellectual way and you should be prepared to work hard, but once you get your thing going, Eve is a great experience and I haven't found its like anywhere.
One of the big differences in Eve compared to most everything I've played, is that there's no set objective or storyline, and during my years in Eve, it has been probably the most difficult aspect. You have to figure out your own goals, your own measure of success, and then head out with those to see how it goes for you. Whether it's that you want to have a blueprint for everything you can, being the top of the killboard of your choice or being the most hated scammer, it's up to you to do what it takes to get you there. That practically everything is run by players made this complex, to say the least, but that's the big thing in Eve for me: There are real people behind every door and you affect them and they affect you and you get to fly space ships while doing it. :P
I admit I've occasionally found myself lost, and had to take a break for a month or few to reorient and re-evaluate my Eve-life, but determination has seen it through and the possibilities always drag me back in with new plans and ideas.
Main thing is, try out a few interesting things, pick one, FOCUS on that until it's done and after that swap. If you swap ever few weeks, you end up having it rough as many things take a specific skill set on the char sheet and in your head to succeed. And skills take time. Spread your training around and you can do nothing well and things suck bad. So yeah, planning is a key in developing your skills.
And one thing I recommend learning is how to cope with risk. You consent to PvP every time you undock, and the losses are exactly that. The faster you learn how to do cope with getting popped and podded, the faster you get one factor of misery out of your way. It happens, it's a fact of life. Take it as a learning experience and go on to replace the loss.
But those are just scratching the surface of all there is. Finding people who know how stuff works is great, but it still won't be easy and simple. |

Get into an active corporation as soon as possible. Important to note that membership numbers =/= activity. I've seen (and been part of) 100+ man corps with 2-5 people only at a time. (Also, not a TZ issue with this particular case).
Make sure the corporation you join does the following:
GÇó Active in the the timezone YOU play. GÇó Does things you like, or would be interested in trying. GÇó If you're at all interested in the roleplaying side, EVE has a large community for that too.
The biggest asset EVE has over WOW and other MMOs is that there is a big sense of community. Things are harder to achieve in EVE that other games, and that's part of the fun. I still talk to guys I flew with back in 2011 who are now red to me and who I engage from time to time, no hard feelings.
The English Help Channel is a great place to ask questions as that channel is moderated, and you will usually get an answer quickly. Also, if you join a corp, your corpmates will be the best asset you can have.
EVE is a social game. The social aspect is what people focus on, as there is no "end-game" or "max level". Take things slow, learn, and above all, don't get discouraged. Welcome to EVE.

Eve can be pretty basic and simple, mining, mission running etc, or it can be as complex as you like, market trading, running a large corp/coalition etc.
Jump in, find something you like doing and go from there.

It's as complex as real life to some extend ... the mechanics are taught quickly, but the complexity comes from what people make out of it and the interactions between people in this game. Also because this is a PvP centric game it's very well balanced, i.e. if you lose your ship or a fight the reason why is 99% you made a mistake or you lack crucial knowledge. This is important, because every risk, loss brings you further in understanding if you ask the right questions. You can wander almost totally safe (except bad luck, carelessness) in this game, if you have the right knowledge and equipment. But of course safe is not always fun, but in a fight it translates into ... having control over the situation. Hence if you find yourself in a 1:1 fight with Tipa (rare case nowadays, fleets are more fun) you know I have a plan.

Pro tip:
Trying to "min max" the game and know everything about it is futile and a waste of your time. It's too vast.
Know only that which pertains to what you want to do. But do not attempt to know everything ahead of time. Do not get into that trap of "OMG I don't want to lose a ship I need to autistically know every last little detail!" mindset. Look up some guides on what in particular you are after, then get into a ship and do it. You will have more fun that way.
That there are aspects of the game unseen by me after 10 years of playing is a good thing. Sucking up every last little bit of content and knowledge like some obsession is not how you play a game. Heck it's not even a game if you play it that way.

You'll need patience and a fascination with detail. In Eve there is always FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). You'll wonder where to find fleet fights and wormholes. You'll certainly think that there's more going on somewhere other than where you are, because most likely there is.
Start an Alpha. See what happens. If you're near Dodixie, send me a in-game message and we'll meet in some local high-sec system and I'll help you figure out some of the basics.
Actually, if you want to see some interesting sights, get into your starter Frigate, warp over to Dodixie and just sit near a station and watch some of the ships come and go.

Don't let the learning curve scare you. It is easy to 'ease into' this game, and you are welcome to learn things at your own pace.
A word of warning. Former WOW players have a bad reputation in some circles here as having a culture or mindset that goes against the culture/mindset of many Eve players. I'm not an expert on what the issues are but I think I've heard things like 'whiny,' 'carebear-ish,' 'risk-averse,' a tendency to deck out a ship with super-bling as a solution to being a bad pilot, etc.
That should not discourage you from playing by any means. It's just a head's up that you might want to find out what cultural/mindset issues there are. |

I also came from WoW and if it's the economy part that you're into eve is so much more difficult to turn real profit. I used to do 150k/day in sales in WoW and could supply my whole guild with whatever it needed. I'm eve I have trouble making enough for a plex through pure manufacturing. I'm still working on spreadsheets and all the things required to run a real efficient industry operation but it's nothing like WoW in that capacity. |
