When we manufacture items can we have unique numbers inscribed on them? Possibly in-game view features. Early adopters could have bragging rights to building items first. Nothing complex just date/time of final build or what not (star-date) It would give eve a new market place for collectors.

The way Eve works all stacked or packaged items have the same info, they're just a number of items and a pointer to a DB entry. This doesn't work with that. It or something like it has been suggested dozens of times over the years, it just doesn't work. Also it would make the market servers cry. |

Some other games let you do this in their crafting systems, but more often than not the items you produce in those environments are not uniform: quality and type of input materials define the attributes of the final product. In those systems it makes sense to "mark" your product so people can follow a quality brand or niche, or avoid crummy ones.
It's also typical in those games for the producer to sell the actual product directly to the consumer.
Whereas in Eve, all the items produced from a blueprint are identical no matter who makes it.
Eve also possess a large number of speculators, station traders, and region traders. I don't know the numbers, but I would bet that most things bought at hubs from sell orders are not directly from the manufacturer.
It really doesn't make sense in the game environment, even if it were technically feasible. |

They'd basically have to re-write EVE from the ground up, and even then it wouldn't be practical. Not gonna happen.
A packaged item that can be stacked or sold on the market looks something like this in the database: "antimatter s, 10000" An assembled item that can be used looks more like this: "mkint's small neutron blaster I, .95 health, .275 tracking, 1000 optimal, 1000 falloff, 10 capacity, ..." etc. Made up numbers obviously, but the point is that there is a difference in the database between packaged and assembled. Each item or stack gets assigned an ID, and there are a finite amount of IDs. Even though most items (see, rounds of ammo, units of minerals, etc) being in stacks, there is still a process in place for recycling IDs, otherwise we'd run out in a matter of days. Now imagine the trillions of units of small things needing their own IDs plus the bigger database data per item that must be stored, processed, and communicated. Not feasible.
The closest we've got is killmarks and dirt on hulls. And just like insurance, rigs, and name, all unique information has to go away for it to be sellable on the market.
It would be interesting to investigate the viability of adding the option for hulls to come out of production assembled with a maker's mark even if it would still get wiped out with repackaging. It wouldn't be worth a full dev team's efforts, but as an after hours project it would be neat.
