i am currently setup on 5 planets 3 barren 1 lava 1 gas
basically every thing is running sweet, however i have 1 minor issue with the gas planet which i cannot seem to figure out.
Each planet consists of 13 installation's these are as follows
1 command centre 1 storage facility 6 basic industry's 2 advanced industry's 1 launch pad 2 extractor units
setup is in the link below, from each extractor unit i have 5 extractor heads (10 in all per planet)
the power usage per planet setup is
barren 97.57% barren 98.19% barren 98.09% gas 98.55% lava 97.45%
now the issue i have is with the gas planet i have the 2 extractor units in my setup however i can only have 9 extractor heads in total on this planet 5 from 1 extractor and 4 from the other extractor. if i try to install the 5th i am told i will overload the power grid, so why the fluctuation in power and why can i not install the elusive 5th head in my unit to make it the same as the other 4 planets?

any help appreciated

It's because gas planets are huge and your links are proportionally larger as well, even though they look just like the ones on your other planets. And the longer your links, the more power it takes. You almost always lose some extractor heads on gas planets as a result.
There are a lot of tools to check planet sizes, but here's a common one. Plug in your J-system number and note the radius of the planets. |

many thanks for the info i never knew that, so would a gas planet smaller than the one i am currently on solve my issue? |

It might. If all else is equal in terms of resource availability, a smaller planet is always better in order to limit the power grid spent on links. But gas planets are so large that even a small one commonly consumes too much power for that last extractor head. |

It's an unusual setup.
If you're making P2, you only need 2 basic processors to feed each advanced processor. If you're able to harvest once a week, you don't need the storage unit. Route everything through the launchpad - use it as storage.
In nullsec I run 6 basic processors feeding 3 advanced processors with level 5 skills. I can usually get 10 extractor heads out - sometimes the links are too long. Often 4 extractor heads are all I need to harvest the 18,000 units of P0/hour needed to keep 3 basic processors busy. |
