With the number of NPCs that get smoked in these sites would it not make more sense that the rats are Empire employed capsuleers and not Baseliner crew?
Just a thought I have been having lately. Writing stories about navy baseliners becomes very bleak when getting lowsec duty is basically a death sentence. |

Not a direct answer, but in terms of NPC crew deaths, I've killed many Fed Navy servicemen for being in Republic space without permission. Even deployment to an allied hi-sec territory is no guarantee of a cush tour for these poor guys and gals.
Another related non-answer: putting burner frigates in small plexes would probably liven things up in the warzone.

For me it is not really the NPC deaths that I find crazy, I mean we are Capsuleers we are Demi-gods with the power over life and death. We kill lots of people. It is more from the point that it just seems like a colossal waste of trained crewmen when a technology is available in lore to remove a portion of that loss and maybe even gain from it.
Burner frigates in Plexs... I am terrified and intrigued. |

I can imagine that crafting stories about navy ships and their crews would be pretty bleak. It's one thing if there's a full-blown war between states going on, as in The Empyrean Age. But just patrolling plexes and getting blown up in space, ship after ship-- that's hard to work into a reasonable backstory. Of course, some crew members do escape in crew escape pods. Maybe the crews in plex defense ships are especially quick about abandon ship procedures? : ) They know it's coming and probably inevitable, after all. Maybe the navies have established crew escape pod rescue patrols? There could be a story in there maybe? Navy plex personnel and navy "coast guard" rescue personnel. Might have to be either an absurd humor story, or a pretty grim story.
(BTW, I have some FW lossmails with navy NPCs on them, along with the capsuleer(s). At least once, the extra DPS from the NPC in a close solo vs. solo fight. The fight wasn't close enough for the NPC damage to be what decided the outcome, but... it wasn't welcome, and the invading capsuleer died and the defending navy ship and same-faction capsuleer survived. So maybe something there?) |

Maybe they are the absolute dregs or the most outspoken ultranationalist inside the militia NPC corp and they were sent to die in droves in the plexes to keep the capsuleer distracted, so they do not start coming into awful realisation about the unwinnable nature of the Pendulum Wars while contemplating their navels, while culling the number of absolutely batshit insane zealots at the same time? Because seriously, button-orbitting is really boring and can lead to off-tangent introspection.
That or they are just unmanned drones put together on the quick before being launched out to convince the capsuleer that the plex is defended. Seriously, it's not like they ever stay in space long enough for maintenance to be a problem.
A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.

Most computer games have much higher death tolls than related films, books etc. to the point of being completely unrealistic. If i were writing a story I'd just tweak the universe a little to have fewer, less death prone, npcs. |

One must retain a healthy separation from the Game and the Lore.
No, Serpentis did not lose 764,000 fully crewed battleships last month.
