I'm just starting to get into trading and I've got a couple of questions which I hope some of you vets could help answer for me.
I've been trying to do some trading in a minor trade hub. I chose ship modules for my first few orders because these are what I felt I knew most about, sticking up reasonably priced buy orders for a few named bits and pieces and selling them on as items trickled in.
My question is about how to decide and research which specific items to go for. So far I've been looking at the difference between the price of existing buy and sell orders (only a small hub so there aren't that many competing buy orders for a lot of stuff) and the amount of stuff being sold. Is this the best technique for searching for decent items to trade?
So far it's been pretty random, just looking at loads of stuff and going for the ones that seem to have a nice balance between volume and margin, although I have no concrete way of determining what exactly this balance should be yet.
I wonder if it would be better to go for a more specific area of the market - should I try to become the sole buyer of all types of medium projectile turrets or xl-shield boosters, and what would be the benefits of doing this?
Hope that makes sense, and thanks in advance for any replies

The majority of what people sell to you will be from missions. It would be a good idea to get a feel for what the rats drop in the area and take advantage of that with strategic buy orders.
More often then not you can usually buy some modules for less then their recyclable value. Thus you could buy bulk in a ship module, refine it and sell the minerals for a profit.
When doing this always keep in mind the fees involved. You need your profit margin to be large enough to at least cover that.

When doing this make sure you realize that you need to do this in massive quantities or it will not be very profitable. Generally you're making only a couple percent per refine. And a couple % profit on a 10-50k isk module is piddles.
