I am not a new player but I would like to get some recommendations and opinions about this module.
Is it good for PvE? PvP?
I have free spare mid slot on PVE Vexor and so I put this module in but practically I see no difference.
How much useful is this or in which situation? Is it worth it at all? thanks |

Its very useful. It makes it easier for your drones to hit their target by increasing the range and accuracy of the drones 'weapons'. Which means it increases your applied DPS rather than the raw number you will see in the fitting window (or fitting tool PYFA/EFT).
I would be surprised if any PvE Vexor fit didn't have at least one fitted.

should probably only use it if you are using heavy or sentry drones. light/med drones should have enough tracking to hit their targets. Other drones you are probably better with a nav comp which increases their mwd speed.

most drones have set orbits so extra optimal doesn't help much, sure it might help when they are trying to catch up to a target, but in general you would want to boost tracking more than range.
with sentry drones I typically boost range as they have enough tracking to hit npc ships. Never really used sentries in pvp. and if I need to pick off a few fast/small ships I can always just swap to tracking speed.

I link that tracking guide often because it helps players understand how turrets in Eve work. I was playing the game for more than a year when I first came across that and it changed my experience of the game.
As a general rule in Eve there is nothing that is inherently true. Everything in Eve is situational. So with that in mind the question now becomes when is it better to use scripts and why.
I mostly use the ODTLs with sentries. In my Domi I can warp at range to an anom and put my Curator IIs out and with the fit that I have with scripted ODTLs I have 81KM optimal on the Curators and 83KM lock range on the Domi. At that kind of range the NPCs are traveling strait at me and their transversal or angular velocity is nearly zero so the tracking bonus does me little to no good.
However once the NPCs are well within my optimal and get close to their optimal they begin to orbit me. At this point the range scripts do me no good, since the NPC are within my optimal even without them, but the tracking script does me a lot of good since the transversal / angular velocity has increased.
Also worth mentioning is that most modules that affect the same attribute suffer from diminishing returns. How this works out is that you get the first bonus at full value. Everyone after that is reduced in value. In other words you are much better off with one 20% bonus than you are with 2 10% bonuses. So if you had two ODTLs and did not want to script them you'd still be better off scripting one for range and one for tracking. |

One of the modules needed for my Dominix to reach above +200km with Sentry drones, with max range (range tank) and max damage. Pretty awesome combined with a Mobile Depot so you can fit prop modules (MJD) reps or cap modules while engaging targets.
In a (Navy) Vexor.. I dont think its a good module, because you'll need your mid slots for something like cap (battery) or shield. I think the current meta is still a speed tanking Vexor fit using an oversized prop mod. Go check out osmium for some current fits. |

Not to argue with the others, just my opinions on this.
If you have nothing else to do with the slot then fine add an omni. If you have anything else to sue that slot for then forget the omin. If you are using the proper drones for the situation range is rarely an issue. If you are using the proper drones for the class of NPC ships you are attacking then drones do not need the tracking help. Given this and a number of other factors I am not surprise in the least that you see no or very little change in your drones abilities to shoot the NPC.

I've used sentries in PVP. I did not fit omnis, but that was because we controlled range carefully and tailored our fits accordingly.
In general omnis are solid if you are using sentries in PVP, but it is not common to use sentries in PVP now. They are a pretty niche tool. But by god they were good in that fight.

Many ratting drone based ship setups are designed so that you don't have to waste time recalling and deploying drones. The idea is to pop out your heavies and let them crunch through everything. With that in mind, many setups like that do use an omni with the tracking script so that the heavies can destroy frigates.
My forsaken rally point running VNI doesn't use anything but heavy drones and has an omni equipped to make that possible. |
