How important is the reputation of a corporation in Eve?
For example, I am a complete newbie (basically defenseless). I was mining in high security space and an experienced player from NotMxHonest Corp tried to assassinate me. She was flying a Caracal and I have an unarmed ship rigged for mining so I wouldn't have survived the first volley had I fallen for her (extremely obvious) trick and given her an opening to shoot at me.
Now this experience has given me reason to believe that anyone from her corporation may be a cowardly, untrustworthy and incompetent bully. This will prompt extra caution when dealing with her corp at the least and I will be warning everyone about her whenever I see her in local from now on.
Does a reputation for cowardice actually affect a group in Eve? How about incompetence? After all, I am so new I have to keep looking at the documentation to figure out what I am doing and I wasn't taken in by her poorly executed trick.
In some games I have played, the turnover is so quick and the world so fragmented that reputation meant nothing. In another game I played, once you developed a rep, everyone knew about it so it was very important. In that game giving your guild a bad name would cause the whole group serious consequences and would likely result in you being asked to leave the quild.
I am just wondering what it is like here in Eve. Is player conduct modified by social pressure here?

rep is one of the most important things in eve although the character that tried to get you probably does'nt care and never will.

Well, yes and no - in the grand scheme of things, nobody would really care enough to rethink their politics. On a smaller scale though, that kind of nonsense for influential corps or corps aiming to be so is not tolerated for entirely different reasons.
The biggest one being, it contributes nothing and is detrimental - your Veldspar mining is not part of any conflict a corporation is likely to be involved in, but your (alt) opinion while insignificant still has the slighest bearing. Moreover, the same member could a) not have been flying an awful ship b) not been in highsec c) not be trying to kill newbies for no real profit.
So in other words, most CEOs worth their salt or weight would simply not put up with it. Their is usually no corporate lynchmob for corporations engaging in this, because they are totally irrelevant and dissipate or hide when pressured and have no assets to take.

Edited by: Kara Mori on 13/05/2007 03:44:07 Just like in real life, only sustained (and summarily reported) actions from a group of people lead to the group getting a reputation for that action. In this particular case, I don't think anyone is going to remember. Reputation (be it bad or good) has to be earned.
Maybe for you, as an individual, you'll be wary of people from that corp. For the rest of us, we'll probably forget who you were talking about in 5 minutes. But hey, maybe after a while if they keep it up and if enough people care to post about it, then some of us might start to remember, thus giving them a reputation.
Edit: Oh, regarding the "how does reputation matter in EVE". It matters a lot at the macro level. When we're talking about big alliances, or popular entities, reputation does play a big part. For instance, RA and -A- have a reputation of logging off to avoid getting killed. BoB has the reputation of that thing we're not supposed to talk about. Burn Eden (a small group compared to all these larger ones) has a reputation of cheap gankers. Do these reputations affect any of these organizations? The answer is yes. How significantly though is up to debate of course.

Yes stupid people judge all by a ticker, it is true.
And eve, despite the superior attitude many pilots hold, has its fair share of stupid people.
