Color blindness can severely affect the readability of an otherwise great user interface. In EVE, we now would like to improve the UI in such a way that color blind people can adjust the color scheme to their needs.
Check out further details in the latest dev blog Color Blindness support is coming to EVE Online.
You also can check out the beta feature on our test server Singularity. Once you have tested the feature, please support our efforts by replying to this survey. Thanks!

I applaud CCP for taking the time to implement this! We in the majority might think it's wasted efforts, but it makes a huge difference for the affected. New Eden for all! |

At Fan Fest 2012 I was at the GUI round table and asked the very first question, which was about the difficultly that I had with colors in game as someone who is red/green colorblind. I was assured at that time that it was something that was checked for.
Yeeeaaah.....
While I am glad that there is progress being made on that five years later, part of the issue are the symbols used in game. The same symbol is used in the overview/local listing for someone who is in my corp, someone who is in my alliance and someone who has an active wardec against me. That doesn't make sense. Please expand the range of symbols used. |

As someone who is severely colourblind....... and as someone with a wife who when she asks me to "pass the X colour item" looks at me with astonishment when she gets the reply "Are you taking the ****"...... I thank you sincerely for this
I loved the "match UI colour to ship" thing..... until I jumped in my Cruor and quite literally lost all of my channel tabs |

This is good news - or it sounds like good news until you get to the bit that says -
Quote:There are a couple UI areas where color blind mode does not work for the time being (most noticeably the scanning 3d scene), but it is our hope weGÇÖll get all those areas covered in the future.
^ This is the main problem I find and I suffer from Protanopia, other parts of the game don't really seem to cause me problems. It it the fact that the scanning screen is black and the icons for the signatures are dark red which makes them very hard to see.
In fact I logged a ticket about this in September (ticket number #268893) -
Quote:Hello I'm red / green colour blind and I find it extremely difficult to distinguish the red cosmic signature dots within the probe scanner view. They blend into the black background making it extremely difficult to use the probe scanner.
Is there any option to either change the background colour of the probe scanner or change the colour / size of the red dots?
I used to love exploring but now its almost impossible as I can't use the new interface.
I received a pretty nice reply which said that my issue would be raised with the relevant team and that I should also bring it up with the CSM in the forums.
Please sort out the scanning interface for us colour blind users this really is one of the things that really sucks!
I will also test out the new features you have implemented on Sisi and report back using the survey form.
Thanks and keep up the great work!

Great idea
Though i would like to see some work done of the color differences done to the icons colors for crystals, must admit i have problems telling the difference between some of them, particularly crystals that are different shade of the same color
Hopefully you can give some thought to making the color of crystals stronger colors or different colors altogether
Keep up the good work :)

Just wanted to say, good on CCP for implementing this. Not colorblind, but I've worked with people who are. Always nice to see life being made easier for them!
Now, can you make some UI changes to accommodate how nothing makes sense after six or seven drinks? I find this to be a recurring problem I have... |

I agree with the best fix being different symbols. Colors are unreliable even with any sort of "fix"
I have Dueteronimia (sp, I know), and have panic'd so many times when it was just somebody from my corp.

I applaud CCP for taking the time to implement this! Its a great advance , now you can continue including Spanish translation for the game, according to the internet,It is the second language of the world by the number of people who speak it and also the third language with more Internet users, after Chinese and English. Just a suggestion...

CCP Phantom, thank you and CCP for considering colour vision deficiencies in the design of GUI colour palettes.
One of the biggest positives that can come out of your initiative is to inform the majority of players that about 6% or more of players have some form of colour vision deficiency or actual colour blindness. Very few of the majority understand that it can actually affect gameplay.
I got kicked out of Repo Industries, a wormhole corp, because in part I couldn't use their labour-intensive scanning methodology that forced me to identify the WH class using the subtle colouring and hues of the WH features I scan down.* Something I could not physically do.
Fortunately, my deuteranomaly ( most common specific deficiency IIRC ) doesn't significantly hinder Eve game play elsewhere. My sight is considered "green weak", i.e. my malfunctioning green-sensitive cones have decreased sensitivity to the green area of the light spectrum. Tough to distinguish hues in that part of the spectrum.
The difference in colour brightness helps - Eve often uses colours with strong contrast in brightness which is good.
* TIP for players with a colour vision deficiency/blindness considering a wormhole career: consider WH corporations that use Vippy AND Vippy's built-in auto-name numbers by static system for wormhole chain mapping and bookmarking. It is designed for quick and time-saving mapping/BM'ing of WH signatures without mucking around.
More importantly, auto-name numbers by static system does NOT require visual class identification on WHs. Vippy is designed and supported BY wormhole pro's FOR WH pro's.

Thanks for raising this with us, this is only a first version so unfortunately it doesn't cover everything we'd like. EVE has a number of different system that generate parts of the interface and hopefully we can extend the coverage of this mode as we keep developing it. Buuuuut if you jump on Singularity, give it a shot and submit some feedback through the survey we're using that info when deciding what to do next. |

This is something I'm interested in for sure. EVE actually works with a number of accessibility controls and in the customisability of the UI makes it accessible for some disabilities. But I'd definitely be interested in hearing more about where we could improve. If you have some specific examples in mind? |

Ho ho! Interesting comment from the simply ignorant.
Colour 'blindness' is a fixed genetic mutation that has enabled the survival of the human species.

The original reason I started the KisOver Overview is that I am color blind. I could not tell the green from the red in most over the standard overviews, so I couldn't tell people in my corp from war targets. Which is pretty significant.
Thank you for this. I'll let you guys know what I think once Singularity responds for me. |

Oh my... either the person is trolling madly or really is this bad. This 'bad guy' represents why we have large portions of the world where females have no rights in life, why one can be jailed for being a different color or religion and why those who become injured or sick often become targets of hate. The momentum against such can and should be continued. CCP, Thank you for working on the color blind assistance. |
