Hello Seeing the current trend of MMOs and MMORPGs moving to free play, I was wondering if CCP will ever consider free to play in Eve. CCP could make money thru items mall and such

Erm....besides Guild Wars, is there any 'true' MMO out there which is free to play?
And to answer your question, the only way CCP makes money is from subscriptions, so I reckon it would be pretty hard for the company to make a profit if their product is free.

Edited by: Le Skunk on 13/05/2007 21:46:10 Yes - get the devs to work packaging t-shirts and such like. That will fix all the lag probelms im sure.
Personaly im happy giving them cash each month so they can sit in their paradise work environment - with back massages and master chefs making them cheese sandwiches or whatever they talk about in the blogs
And i wouldn be seen dead in an Eve sweatshirt. Wearing one ups your chanaces of gettgin beaten up int the street by 10%. Combined with a baseball cap 35%. Carrying a 80 quid poster under you arm 43%
It also lowers your chances of pulling by 700%

Browser based "MMOs" don't count.
However Planetside, Shadowbane, and Anarchy Online all have some sort of free play at the moment. Really its just the graveyard of failed MMOs that companies have generously decided to keep the servers going. In Planetside's case 90% of the people there have it as part of the "All Access pass".

There's no such thing as a free MMO. Browser-based games don't count. Guildwars is not an MMO, and even if it were, it's got $80 expansion packs for you to buy buy buy!

I'd say people better hope the Bloodsucking, hairgrowing, whatchimacallit MMO their making hits paydirt and brings(as i think it will) plenty of new doremi on the table.
That way, both games, Whitewolf based and EVE, are more likely to get cheaper monthly charges.
Maybe.

Yeah, and with the recent dev post, looks like you can buy game time straight from CCP, with ISK, without the need of a time code.
That's fairly free...

Unlikely, because the fee mostly pays for the staff and servers, not overhead. But what having multiple MMO's would do is guarantee each others survival, since if one fails they can always fire most of the devs and offer it as a semi-legacy free/cheap game ala the aforementioned MMO's. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

No, because the only way they could support free game time would be with ingame ads, and that is an instant turn off. ______________________________

You can already play for free thanks to GTCs, ISK is hardly difficult to make.

i havent seen this trend
all the "free" ones lack in one or more things IMHO
and thats not including service and support
actually i think you must be blind and just discovered all those crappy free play games - pay to play games in general are increasing instead of the other way around ____ __ ________ _sig below_ the jet cans are made so that people that dont mine can get free ore

Ah the classic example of a 'free' mmorg of Guild Wars.
It is not free. Arenanet (i think it is) make their money by producing 2 expansions a year (with two seperate teams giving them a year each to make it). If you do as they want and buy the expansions then the cost that someone who plays guild wars pays is about the same as a eve subscription (if you pay in the longer amounts as it is cheeper per day).
Guild Wars aint free it costs the same most other mmorgs. Get it right, it aint hard.

why do you think there are billboards in game

Dungeon Runners has a free play option. You don't get to use the bestest stuff if you don't pay, but there are some who treat this as a challenge. But as I always take the route of least resistance I became a paying member.
But then you compare the size of the dev teams on DR and Eve. One with less than a dozen the other one with gazillions. I pay my subs gladly to CCP to allow the game to develop.

LMAO. I'm having mental images of a big butch guy walking down the street in a T-shirt and hat with just EVE written on the front of them. In some parts of the UK that would definitely invite a beating from some yobs.

Entropia Universe is a truly free to play MMO but it does have in game advertisments.
Now mind you if you want to get anywhere in the game you have to put money into the game to buy in game items and the like unless you like collecting fruit, dung and sweat to sell to the crafters for 6 months.

Edited by: Plutoinum on 14/05/2007 11:10:35 Silkroad is free, 2Moons will be free, the latter is currently in beta, although it's the localized version of a current korean mmorpg afaik. They make money with advertising and/or virtual item/currency sales. They are real mmorpgs, not browser games.
I found silkroad boring, grinding, didn't see anything else, I only tried it for 2 days. Can't comment on 2moons.

hey i wouldn't mind to get a short commercial once a day when i log in, and mebbe perhaps add some commercials to the billboards, problem is this prolly won't be enough to keep it running so they will think up more and more ways to add commercials (like stickers on your ship hull or when u do missions, when u warp into a DS u get a commercial message popping up.)
In the end it will be too annoying to bare and people will quit even though it is free.
then again if they added the first 2 things and made the sub cheaper.. that be cool CCP, let us pay the online shop with Direct Debit!!!

Nope Entropua is NOT free -- you start whit 0.0 cridets and only ways to get cash is to deposit money in to youre acc.. and EACH time you do any it cost you money as all youre items get more and more broken and then you pay to repair it. and you use ammo allso only come form buying it. and loot is rare yes some time you can get RELLY lucky and loot a good item or get some good money form em - i payed for more then a year and my char never made any money. you need to work skills to be relly good hunter in game. and to get skills you need to use weps. and it cost.. there are one thing you can do there dont cost you any money at all and its the only way to make money whit out useing money.. its collecting sweet form mobs... this is hard to get and dont pay that well. so there is no way you can call this game free.. if you play for 5-6houres a day and you are a hunter you easy spent 100+ $ on ammo and stuff ( that will get you 10k rounds)and then there is the money you spent for armor and weps and reparing it all. in ohter words the game is NOT free
