Incredible. Those who recognize the pattern of duality of sexes built into how reproduction works on this planet, selective evolution, DNA patterns, patterns of movements of energy and forces in chaordic ways.... little puffer fish nest. |

Yeah, seems to take a lot of effort. That fish is smarter than a lot of guys. I never did get any results from the old being drunk and saying "Do you want to dance?" technique. |

All jokes aside... How does a puffer fish construct two concentric perfect circles? |

Khergit Deserters wrote:All jokes aside... How does a puffer fish construct two concentric perfect circles? Well, I have explained that in my previous comment, repetition - like autistic fish. This is a form of fractal. Fractals are everywhere in nature because they only need compact formula that is run again and again. Such formula would probably need only few fish neurons to execute. Probably fish is so fixated on it that it compares the effect to the thing in her brain constantly.

It's like those birds who construct small 'love huts' to attract female attention. These huts are well built and decorated with all sorts of colourful stuff.

Probably the fish compares a stimule from the left eye to that on the right eye until they "feel right" (trigger the hardcoded neuronal pattern that favors such disposition of sand both on male and female). This way it can easily build a structure with radial symmetry whose dimensions are a factor of its body size (we shoud check whether all nests are the same size o larger fishes build larger nests).
It's like bees, they build hexagonal cells based on the position of legs and the mandible which naturally triggers the appropiate angle. Specialization allows for extremely compact self-replicating patterns, and of course we know nothing of the trilions of bees which failed to survive because their combs were more costly to build.

Ever looked at a pan of tater tots (small baked potatoes) and instead of willy nilly onto the plates, drew a line between them in your head to dole em out more fair? YEah, we all do that kind of stuff all the time, it depends on how much you think about (giving a ****) it and what kind of condition you're in.
And have you ever seen how some birds will decorate? It's hilarious when one makes an arch with dry grass and another bird just starts ripping it out of the ground.

Bower birds. Saw em on tv once.

Maybe you heard about that or not, but even little children are very good at geometry and statistic. Its only that they and we are not consciously crunching those numbers. Its like the underlying foundation, ingrown into the way human mind operates. You can probably say when the circle is perfect. Where there are minuscule differences in angle and size. It is like that because our survival depends on keeping us aware about our environment.

One amazing thing about humans is our intuitive understanding of ballistics (the trajectories of launched objects). Humans can throw basketball through a hoop 10 ft (3.048 m) above the ground. To do that, they have to launch the ball with just the right amount of force, and at just the right angle, for it to travel in along a parabola and go through the rim. The force and angle needed vary, based on distance from the goal, one's one height, whether one is standing or jumping, etc.
If the target is moving (for example, a receiver in (American) football running across the field, we also have to evaluate speed and distance, to "lead" the target just right. In addition to setting up the right ballistic trajectory. It's all done intuitively, but there is still some instantaneous decision making going on. I suppose it's a skill that evolved with humans and gave them a weapon for survival. Being able to launch a missile (a stone, a spear or an arrow) in a proper arc and hit an animal or an enemy gave the species a pretty nice offensive capability.
I suppose that also might explain why apes at the zoo fling poo-- our cousin primates are also natural-born object flingers. Besides, it gets a fun reaction, and those annoying gawkers deserve it anyway. |
