I got trolled and some bounty on my head. A great way to introduce a newbie to EVE Online. I expected this to happen anyway!
But what I want to know is, will the bounty be reset to 0 ISK when somebody kills me? I see they can only claim up to my ship and modules worth, but if my bounty exceeds that of my ship value, they will get 20% of the total bounty?
Anyone who has expertise, please advise me on this matter. To be on the wanted list is a bit annoying and some people will now hunt me down in low sec areas. |

In low sec areas even with no bounty you will get hunted down. That's why it's lowsec. If your ship gets desroyed by another player this player will get a percentage of your bounty as payout, depending on the value of your ship and the amount of your bounty. But don't worry too much. In high-sec you should be pretty safe if it is not too high. I had my bounty for months and I lost mine only because I was part of a roam in null-sec.

When you are killed your killer gets 20% of the value of whatever you were flying at the time.
This process continues through subsequent killings until all the bounty amount has been paid out. |

Well, that doesn't sound great. I expected my bounty to be set to zero when I get killed.
Now this means I have to get killed a few times before bounty reaches zero. I already got 20 mil ISK on my head.
At the moment, I'm mostly in high sec areas as I'm meeting up people and setup production. I'll then go to low sec if I can find an alliance or corporation to join and have backup.
I see low sec is like free for all, bounty or no bounty. Its like the open seas, full of pirates who wants to relieve me of my contents. |

Why even remove the bounty? It gives you a badass WANTED sign. So appreciative!

I'm not completely positive on it since the bounty system was last altered quite a while back, but I think the 20% thing is to avoid exploitation or some such. Someone else with better knowledge on the subject matter could have a better answer or more correct one. I never really paid much attention to the old bounty system anymore than the current iteration to be honest.

In game bounty is like that hair that grows in funny places. After a certain age its normal and no one particularly cares about it.
More often than not its used to troll newbros.
The type of bounty you should be concernd about is handled informally between players, And believe me, if you had one you would know all about it.

This process continues through subsequent killings until all the bounty amount has been paid out. ^^^This is the answer.
Also, it is very unlikely that someone is going to actively hunt you because you have a bounty. Right now the entire bounty system is very broken and essentially without purpose. Hopefully CCP will at some point fix it so that it has meaning, but for now it really does not. Having a bounty does not change game mechanics to make you a legal target in highsec space...or in other areas of the game but really it doesn't really matter much there, does it?
Though the bounty system as a whole is broken at the moment, players put bounty for different reasons; some do it to new players just as a sort of initiation rite to see if they will freak out and/or as a way of saying "hi, welcome to the game", some give it among their group of peers or opponents as sort of a tip-the-hat small gesture of respect, some don't know that it really doesn't matter much and waste large amount of their isk putting bounty on player they are angry at.
Really, don't worry much about it.

Here's what you do.
Give it no more than a passing thought. It will affect your gameplay in no way whatsoever.

Thank you for all the feedback!
The thought that I got bounty as an initiation ritual sounds plausible, as I did freak out, yet I knew people going to put randomly bounty on my head. I didn't know what the effects would be.
It is nice to hear not much going to happen.
I have to say, somebody put a bounty on my head and said they done it out of love. |

When you don't know the difference between there, their, and they're, you come across as being so uneducated that your viewpoint can be safely dismissed. The literate is unlikely to learn much from the illiterate.

As it stands the bounty system works as intendedGäó . As much as I miss the old system pilots could exploit it for profit quite easily. All you had to do was wrack up a nice bounty, kill yourself in a cheap ship with an alt, and then you received a nice payday.
Under the new system, bounty is only paid out based on the cost of the ship lost. Therefore, there is no way you can profit from killing yourself with an alt for bounty pay-outs. For more information view this link.
As others have said above, having a bounty does not make you a valid target, so you don't need to worry about having one. If pilots want to kill you, they will regardless of a bounty.

Bounties are an indication of 3 possibilities.
1: You aggravate a lot of people and thus have a high bounty.
2: Trolls, your friends and maybe a few enemies think its funny to burn isk to aggravate you by placing a bounty on you.
3: You like to burn isk by putting bounties on yourself.
Bonus reason is old bros like to mess with new bros who beg for isk in rookie help chat where asking for isk is not allowed.
Bounties are useless beyond sending subtle messages, the context of which is likely only ever known by the person who places the bounty or in the case of someone who likes to gank and gets them often from their victims. |

It is not 20% worth of what you are flying, it is 20% of what you are losing - after dropped loot and insurance. This can make a big difference.
