All I am advocating is a pub. A simple pub. Themed to the race or faction. Perhaps being able to interact with mission agents would be a good and simple way to use it.
Which may be interesting the first time. But why would you keep walking to the pub when you can interact with agents from your docked ship. Its faster and less tedious.
Do you get it yet? There is no function that can be provided by WiS that would not be easier and faster than adding a button to the station panel or opening a chat channel. One of the reasons that cq flopped was that it didn't do anything! People played with it for 5 minutes and turned it off.
The only intresting idea for WiS I've read is a corpse room. That's it.

I'm not sure the engine they created for the captains quarters is even capable of multiplayer yet. I think this would be a massive investment.

I'd rather CCP focused on the T3's they're working on, or dealt with the neither here nor there 'attribute system.'

Ya know, I 've seen this idea bandied about on a few different occasions, but no one has ever explained how it would be a benefit to CCP and the Eve community to spend time and resources creating anything that would encourage people to come online and do nothing but sit in station socializing with others doing nothing but sitting in station. What content does this provide for the community?
If you want to socialize in game, you can do that. Start your own "Pub" chat channel. Knock yourselves out. But in a game where the players are not customers, but rather the game content, the whole idea as offered provides nothing of value to the Eve experience. Does anyone seriously think that people will fly all over New Eden just to go to that "hot new club"? C'mon.
If you're looking for a place to socialize online, sign up for Facebook or Twitter. Or maybe even, oh I don't know, walk away from the computer and go out and spend some time with friends or family. Ya know, real human interaction? Y'all have heard of that, right?
Respectfully submitted.

The only thing more popular with Eve Players than opening the door and iterating on WiS is *not* doing that. The whole fiasco that was the Incarna release has everyone at CCP unwilling to touch that due to the risk analysis being about one sentence that says "go try defusing a bomb while drunk, that's less likely to blow up in your face."
Basically in order for CCP to do anything with Walking in Stations they're going to need some entirely other game to justify the work effort on it, and so far every attempt CCP has made at some kind of FPS game has fallen flatter than a pancake under a hydraulic press. If it was just a scene you could go into to interact with agents it would not require another game. They already have the captains quarters, it would be the same, just bigger and themed to the race/faction.
That's still time and effort that isn't being spent on other things, and with how crunched the Eve art pipeline is even just a station environment is actually pretty expensive in terms of time and people.
The reason it would end up needing another game to justify the expense is because the work to get to just that bare-bones station environment isn't small in terms of art and resources, or even programming. On top of that the actual promise of WIS is the ability to show off your character to others and the rendering engine needs a *lot* of optimization work before it's going to be able to handle even a roughly instanced station interior with dozens or hundreds of players.
Don't get me wrong here, I would *love* for CCP to iterate on WiS personally. I just don't see it happening any time soon, because the vast majority of players are apathetic on the concept, and of the remaining players the preponderance of public opinion is sitting on the "don't" side of things. |
