i was sitting here doing some missions, and it hit me. why do i play this game.. why is it that i keep comming back to this game...
and in the end the main reason is "real time skills". i can be afk and still feel i am moving my cherectar forward, if it wasnt for this there is so many other games with a much more exciting gameplay and pvp system...
kind of made me sad to think that This was my main reason.. had hoped i could say "BUT OFCOUSE, the missions are so EXCITING and there are so much differend to do and it all is such fun..." or "but the pvp system is just perfect and i can do pvp and try my skills out against other players:D"... or something...
but mainly the missions are even worse then games like Ryl2, wow, l2 etc, here its not go out kill X of these to get me x of this. no its go there and kill everything.. (yer i know there is other type of missions but they are just like any other game, although in other games there is a more diversity on them)...
then there is the pvp: well the pvp.. yer it have been up so many times, but basically, find a gang and hope you got the most people, and jump around untill you find a easy pray. or gatechamp for hours hoping somebodi jumps in and get ganked... thats all there is to pvp here...
the industrial part is as good as fully AFK gaming, with like 2-5% of gaming and rest just waiting...
so yer.......
but what is it that makes YOU come back...`? you found the light of EVE yet?

Industry takes a lot of skill and time! All that hauling can't be done afk. All those negotiating tricky mineral contracts can't be done idleing in station. And ofc. me answering all these forum posts soooo isn't proof of what you're saying.
Back on topic: I find Eve challenging and I like interacting with others. Basically Eve was the first MMO I tried and I've stuck with it

no grinding (well for SP anyways, used to grind for isk.. thats before invention and T2 production... mwahahhahaa.. and no, I build where I sell, they dont leave station so no use ganking me...)
that you can molest people freely in low sec/0.0 (and high sec too... )
but yeah, I just feel at home you know... that my char is me...
none of the other game makes my char feels unqiue....

hehe yer. something like that right;)
thanks all for the answers.. pls keep em comming and more like the first, with some exsplanation maybe :)
Ps: hauling is mainly afk, from a to b, and a to b for contract is afk. mining is 80% afk in high sec and 20% in 0.0 (meaning your not really doing anything but maybe look every 3minutes). produce is 5minutes of setting something up then X-days of waiting, same with research, (yer you have to wait x days for the skills, but this is really alsow afk work) so industrial is almost afk work;) although hopefully some one makes more play out of it then actually needed.

What i love about this game is that people like you don't understand it and eventually get frustrated and leave. Unfortunately not before starting a few threads that ultimately intent to turn this game into wow. I'd call that collateral damage.

Yeah, the exact same question comes to my mind too each time I do some missions... ;D
What makes me come back is my addiction to "the shakes", which I get most if I roam/fight solo against the odds (not in a throwaway ship).

I got asked what am I going to do when I get more money (being an indy), and described the process of purchasing more BPOs etc, manufacturing more etc, then got asked 'But what else besides re-invest into your production, after all that what are you going to do?',,
I said I'll fly a titan, which, regardless of your trade, is the goal everyone aspires to eventually. Why else do you need money?

So true.
I used to absolutely love the game, but then changes to both the game mechanics and the makeup of the playerbase resulted in never being able to fight anyone without 5286 of that person's closest friends showing up. EVE became blobtastic, and it hasn't been much fun since.
Moreover, people used to play this game for FUN, not just to win. You'd see evenly matched enemies going at it until one side was left standing, but now people have applied real world warfare takes to EVE across the board. This means most people never engage unless they're certain of success or unless losing will provide some advantage (i.e. diversionary tactics). This results in combat having evolved to nothing but ganking; people are playing to win at the cost of the fun involved in the process of getting there. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire

I began playing eve as my boyfriend and a lot of his friends were playing it at Lan centre, i got interested in the graphics and i've always been into games.
The main reason im still here? The people in eve, eve isnt just a game its a complex society with lots of people who i adore talking to. Sure you get a lot of idiots, but generally most of the people who play eve are lovely :)
The social aspect of eve is more important to me than anything :)

Quite simply because EvE is hard.
Effort is rewarded, and there are harsh consequences. You have to strive to do well or you get pwned.
I find it pretty easy to beat nearly any game I play. I'm not the greatest gamer around, but I'm well above average. Paying $50 - $100 (or whatever) for a game that takes me a week or two to clock starts feeling like a waste.
So paying $20 a month for something I can't beat, ever, is fine by me. Sure sometimes I lose interest, but I can always come back later, or try doing something else with my character or another one.
The great thing is, even when I'm not playing my character is improving, so I'm not pressured to grind my char up to keep up with mates. I had a go at WoW, but got my character to lvl 40 something, got bored and never played it again.
I stopped playing eve for 8 months or so, but I came back in the end. -- Acura, the best stats. Pity it had to be caldari.

There's just too much to do ingame, i'm mainly into R&D, manu and it takes a lot of time and effort to get where I want to be.
Eve is just massive and there's always something to do and somewhere to go. I have done most eve things besides capital ships and I don't think i'll be doing that for a very long time.
I still want to do more exploration, but i'm waiting for the bug fixes and respawns to work before commioting hours to chasing ghosts. There's hacking/archeology, invention to play with atm which is fun in some parts (mods), but freaking frustating in others (ships) .
My 'light' in eve is diversity, when bored or feeling down your probably not playing the game, just getting stuck in bad habbits.

Watching my corp wonder around the endless 0.0 space using a titan as a home base. Mining and Ratting a different system every night then moving on. A giant roving fleet with nothing better to do. Occassionly going to high sec to sell or visiting the local 0.0 alliance to sell to them.
OH wait that is a just a dream Ah but what a wonderful dream it is
Sorry but that is my idea of 0.0 mining

I was sitting around watching TV.. someone itroduced me to EQ2, much better than watching TV. Got bored with EQ2 wandered aimlessly in the MMO market for afew months. Played DDO got to "end game" in 2 weeks and fantasy roleplaying aint my thing. stumbled across a free 2 week trial for eve, tried it out and 1 week into my 2 week trial i had purchsed the game and been hooked ever since. I cheated on Eve with Vanguard because my friends from EQ2 convinced me to... yeah that lasted 4 days.
PvP is great fun most of the time is straight gank, but every once in a while you stumble across an even fight and coming out on top from one of those feels good.
however dont try to make pvp decisions while drunk, find someone to tell you what to do
