This game is varied and personal. In most cases there are no clear rights or wrongs or bests or worsts. Everything is situational and most stuff comes down to personal preferences and playstyles.
It was a difficult adjustment for me when I first came to this game from WoW where there was a formulaic way to do everything. In WoW there are leveling guides and dps guides etc... that tell you the best way to level or your best in slot gear or give standardized ways to kill bosses etc... None of that exists in Eve. It can be a little disorienting at first but I grew to love it.
Due to the exponential growth in training time for each skill level with no greater gain, it typically pays to diversify and have more options in this game than to focus on one thing.
PvP in this game has a lot to do with meta game meaning thinking about what your opponent is thinking about. To do that ( among other things ) you need to know not only what your ship is capable of but also what your opponent's ship is capable of.
Further due to the rock, paper, scissors nature of this game having options open to you is typically better than just being good at one ship or one fighting style etc...
As a result of all of the above and more I typically recommend that new players keep their skills general and stay in smaller ships. This way you can try out everything and get a feel for all the different piloting styles. If you want to be good in PvP in this game, then having flown your opponents ship can go a long way.
I also would not recommend that you start off PvPing in faction ships. To get good in this game you need experience and to gain experience and learn in this game requires loosing ships. You are far better off learning 100 cheap lessons than 10 expensive ones. What I am trying to say here is that if you need to ask this question then you probably should not be flying either of them at his point. Once you have developed your own personal piloting style then you will have a good idea which ship is better for you and wont' have to ask.
My main recommendation is to skill all the small ship and weapons skills up to 3 or maybe go to 4 after that if you are having fun with it. Try out all the different piloting styles like brawling versus kiting, shield versus armor, ewar, speed etc... You will gain a lot of knowledge and experience on that path and be a more versatile pilot as a result.
Keep in mind that your goal at this point should be learning and growth not winning. If you try to learn as much as you can the wins will eventually come. If you try to win as much as you can then the learning will be much slower and more painful.

WoW is a stats game Eve is not. WoW is a hyper balanced game where there are few differences between the classes and just a few percent more stats makes a huge difference. A level 1 character in WoW could not kill a level 100 character even if that level 100 went afk. In Eve a day 1 player in a frigate can blow up a 10 year old character in a Battleship.
Eve is not a stats based progression game like WoW. In WoW I can find out what the best in slot gear is or best spec or ideal rotation or best dps class etc... Nothing like that exists in this game. We don't have damage meters. We don't have add ons. We don't have balanced PvP where you queue up for a 3 v 3 arena match or a 40 man battle ground where all players are the same level with roughly equivalent gearscores.
Eve is a game where knowledge and situational awareness and having tricks up your sleeve is important.
If you are looking for WoW like advice in this game then you are going about it all wrong and would likely benefit from a perspective change.

This is the NC Q&A. This section of the forum is for new players. I wind up giving a lot of the same clich+¬ answers again and again and again in here. Every day we have new players in this game that weren't around last month when I answered nearly the exact same question that they are asking me today.
I am not the best player of this game. I can not give good advice to more experienced players. I can however help very new players get used to the basics of the game and help them around many of the common mistakes that most players make in the first month or so of the game.
If you are looking for more advanced answers then maybe you should be posting in "Ships & Modules" instead of NC Q&A. I mean you can ask this question here just don't get upset with me when you get a new character type answer in the new character section of the forum.
Xavi Mendosa wrote: Do not direct people to get cheaper all the time. Don't you have any music instrument? When you start to learn playing guitar or a piano, you don't buy the cheapest one. You buy the highest quality according to your budget. Because you need to enjoy it and not get bored before learn it. I remember, sometimes I just watched my guitars with pleasure then tried to play that hard piece that I could never play. You must FALL IN LOVE with your instrument before play it.
I do not have any music instrument no. However I fail to see what relevance that has here. Does your guitar blow every time you play it? I stick by my original comment that loosing 100 cheap ships is far better than loosing 10 expensive ones.
If you can afford to buy a bunch of PLEX and loose 1000 expensive ships without giving it a second thought than more power to you. However you are not going to win in solo combat early on in your Eve career. If you are at the point where you can win solo in PvP then you should not be asking questions in the NC Q&A at least not PvP questions.
I can not stress this enough. Eve is not a stats game it is a knowledge game. You don't learn from wins and you don't learn from being overpowered. You learn from being out numbered, out gunned and out classed and figuring out a way to hold your own against the odds.
If you are looking for the short cut to glory then you are playing the wrong game. It seems to me that you might be trying to play Eve from a WoW perspective and if you are then I suggest that there might be some good information for you in my last couple of posts if you let go of your preconceived notions and try a fresh perspective.
Regardless you don't have to read my posts you can just ignore me. However you are going to have a hard time convincing me that I was wrong to post a newbie answer in the NC Q&A.
Most importantly have fun and fly it like you stole it from your ex-wife in the divorce. Oh and welcome to new eden.
