Since sme recent sisi patches I no longer see the eve client to generate a cache foler in it's working folder & no more prefs.ini file and stuffs ? Where are these files stored now, i.e; portraits and the other cached files ? Even settings folder has been removed but I still get my user settings as they have always been even if I delete the eve client completely and do a fresh new sisi copy and patch it. Are these things stored on the server now ?

Screenshots and logs are being now stored in Documents and Settings/currentuser/My Documents/Eve ... Cache and settings are stored in Documents and Settings/currentuser/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP.
This is part of the Vista compatibility changes.

How is thing going to work out with different accounts? I used to run my accounts from seperate folders to keep the cache seperated, with less crashes as result.
Running more accounts at the same time from one folder/cache doesnt increase game stability for me.

Does Eve use the variabeles? or is it a hardcoded path?
I myself dont have the profiles on my C drive for example, will the cache still be created on C like so many other games do? Also, The 'My Documents' folder can be moved separately from the profiles, by the feature 'Move' from the properties menu. Does the Client recognise these changes in default path?
Thanks :)

Please make it possible to retain the old locations or even choose an own location for cache / logs! I really donŠt want to have thousands of chatlogs on my system disc and for sure not in the documents-folder!

I third that (edit: forth that now apparently). All this tiny files being written to the disk (seriously, can't we have 1 file per login session? or at least 1 file per hour or something?), this severely fragments the drive that they are written to. And now you want to put it on the system drive? I beg you to reconsider.
Furthermore, i have dual WD70 Raptors, 10k RPM, setup in RAID-0 to optimize my game's disk access. These are a separate drive from my system drive. Now you are screwing me out and basically saying that i can't choose to put the game on my dedicated gaming drive? (Access requests to cache/capture folder is far greater than to any other folder in EvE)
Finally, i have multiple accounts, and when logs from all those accounts get combined into the same folder, it's really not nice. Just spent more than need trying to find logs from test server.... Can you at least append the logs with the character name?
Oh and BTW, in the current version on the test, the logs are written to the new direction, but they are definitely not being read from there. Every time i clicked on the logs button in-game, it came up empty

um if you running different accounts on one computer they would all go to the same folder anyways... unless you run each of those accounts off a different downloaded cilent. which is stupid. you can run 3 instances of eve off of the same cilent. nd normal stuff.
so what you guys are saying doesn't make sense
however I do want to seperate my test server and normal
so what's going on?

I have 5 clients on my HDD, 3 for TQ and 2 for the test server. For some strange reason my comp runs 3 clients better (more stable, faster etc) if the clients are in seperate folders. Also if you take the time to look into it there were several developer posts saying that it's the smart thing to do.

This does indeed work. It's not a great solution in any way, but if/until CCP introduces something better this will allow multiple clients to be run correctly against separate cache folders. This is only tested under Vista BTW, but it should work under XP too.
1. Create 1+ accounts for EVE, and log in to each so that Windows sets them up correctly. 2. Make a new copy of EVE if needed, then start up EVE and configure it how you'd like. 3. Log out and go back to your main account. Create a batch file with the following and put it in the copy of EVE you're allocating to the new account:
runas /profile /user:ComputerName\NewAccountName "eve.exe"
4. Create a shortcut to this as necessary.
It's not a very elegant solution, but it'll cause the second EVE client to be fired up using the extra Windows account and hence seperate their settings/cache folders. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

Im 5-th and CCP - stop deside for us where we have to save our chat logs and screenshot's!!! If i have EVE in disc D and TEST-EVE in Disc F, there have some reason I do that... Don't mess with my choice to save things on my own computer and never push me in Vista side!!!

This is a serious issue.. I hope the devs are really scratching their heads on this one.. They should know everybody can run at least two different clients on different versions with different settings (TQ and sisi)..

The move of the cache/settings and related writable folders to the docuements & settings is part of the ongoing updates we are making for Windows compatibility.
However, we are working on a way of allowing the client to run under the old system for those people who wish to keep their account and server settings seperate between different directories.

Edited by: nardaq on 25/05/2007 16:44:54 eeh, i hope the option is still there to put it in the eve folder to keep it al to gether (and im running eve on a faster disk)
caching need big improvements!
make one file for the gamelog and cap it at 500k or so? i mean i got 4100 game logs over the pas 2 months and 3800 are below the 4k 2500 below the 500 bytes with a clustersize of 4k, AND this caching is messingup the diskfragmenting
why not hookup the MachoNet cache in to the memory what kind of data its "caching" im removing this folder once a while to get performance boost!

Any chance that u can make the paths for cache, screens, logs choosable individualy ? , atm im using a ram-drive for my cache to speed things up a bit, a way to choose different locations for files makes life more easy and might improve performance on the client side aswell without the need for .bat files to relocate them.

Note that this will not work until the test servers are updated to at least build 32743
The capture and logs folders are now permenantly moved to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\EVE
If you do not switch the LUA off, the cache directory (and settings) can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE
In order to run with a cache folder per client folder on your hdd:
1) create a shortcut to eve.exe 2) edit the properties of the shortcut and set the target to be (and case is important): ...\eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF 3) start the client using the shortcut

This is so confusing
So basically, if I follow those three steps my cache will remain in the same place? Or will it be in its own folder in documents & settings/bla/bla?

So it will remain impossible to keep the logs out of "My Documents"? Please think about this once again. As the client creates thousands of logs (specially chatlogs and gamelogs) within a few months, this could be problem for my system, specially for file-search. And I really donŠt want to delete logs manually every few weeks.

have them split logs into seperate folders based on the char your using at the time, so their more neatly organised.

I would like to keep it old way (c:/eve/cache), i understand that u want ppl to start using vista (since ccp is microsoft fanboys heh) but from my programmer point of view, settable folder for cache/logs/screenshot is matter of ONE variable (well ok 2, 2nd for settings, or just 1 for using "old style cache"). So why not make it avialable to just set it in prefs.ini ? Like relly, your code is not messed so bad that it cannot be setable, at least i hope so.
And nardaq, thanks for stealing my sig :P, u could mention about me :P ---
