Let me preface this with.. I am a complete newbie. I have VERY little experience, I am even posting from a trial account. I've been thinking about paying/playing for a long time, but one GLARING thing has stopped me.. I have no idea what EVE is all about.
I mean, I have a general idea what there is.. PvP, PvE(it is lacking?), and industry. But when it comes right down to it, I have no idea what a typical player, of ANY standard, does in a day of EVE Online.
Maybe I haven't done enough research. Perhaps there are blogs and podcasts that could explain the situation to me. I do not know, honestly.
I like the atmoshpere, even the elitist/jackass one, truly. Combat seems dull at the lower skill level, and I realize PvE always will be(or at least I think so). And of course mining is basically listening to music and helping out your corp. But I have no idea what PvP is like. I haven't had to deal with the politics, though it very much intrigues me.
I don't even know what I want at this point, maybe just a long winded explanation. What IS EVE? What do YOU do in a typical day? Are there any websites or podcasts you'd recommend, and why?
I will be starting a payed account after my trial runs out, regardless of the results of this thread.. But I really would like some information. If you're willing, I'd VERY much appreciate some information, of any kind.
Thanks in advance.

EVE IS SPARTA!!!
Seriously, its a mmo, you do the typical things you do in other mmo's, roam around, explore, make cash ( isk in this case ), upgrade your char ( also in this case, your char + ship(s), kill other players >:D, make ..interesting friends etc etc

For PvP, watch some of the videos in the videos forum.
There's all sorts of stuff, from fleet battles to solo to gang action.

An alternative option is shuttles, but they don't tank very well.

EvE is alot bigger than any other MMO FACT, in almost every sense of the word so what you DO varys alot more than other games.
There is no endless grinds to "level up" Im sure you already know about the unique skill point system. Besides that and the HUGE focus on PvP be it combat, market, production PvP (Yes they're PvP ALMOST everything you do in game has an effect on another player) so theres a fully self sustaining economy in EvE driven entirely by players thats what makes it different really. Not like other MMO's that are basically single player games online >.>
as to what an average player does, completely IMPOSSIBLE question :P EvE's to big. Some players log in and dont even undock, just produce items, buy and sell minirals and items make cash invest cash talk with corp mates. Some live out in deep 0.0 space and dont dock the entire time they're logged in. Some run missons all day long and have never shot another player while others have never shot a misson AI (rat as we call'em).
And in PvP you still have massive differences Some are pirates who PvP and ransom your ship , runnin around belts all day scanning frantically, warpin in on targets. Some are campers who sit and pop things comin through gates all day long (really really boring if ya ask me but some love it so meh) And theres even some anti pirates who try stop pirates and campers . Then theres 0.0 PvP'rs who fight for their allainces which can mean any of the above PvP and fleet battles of 100 v 100 players and more (but usually not cause lag'll kill'em all before each other....)
Theres huge varying odds in each element or carear in EvE I cant give you a day in the life of a pod pilot cause honestly EvE is what you make it and no 2 EvE pilots live exactly the same. (cept maybe loser miners who afk mine all day in haulers but no one cares about them, not even their mothers)

I have played many mmo's over the last years and I can honestly say that eve is the one closest to being perfect. Eve is a pure and simple capitalist economy taken to the most extreme measure possible inside of a game.
If you like to shoot things you can do so here. You can shoot computer AI's (rats). Or you can shoot real live targets of varying skill and determination. You can choose to shoot people to protect others. Or you can choose to be the one who people need protecting from. You can even shoot people just because someone else in this game has paid you to so.
You can engage in the most extreme capitalist economy I have ever seen or even heard of. Making and breaking the fortunes of yourself and others. And it isnt like just because you are a "carebear" you cant protect yourself. People with lots of industry skills in this game can be just as deadly if not deadlier than those with all pvp skills. Because in this game if you cant do the shooting yourself there are people willing to do it for you as long as you pay them well.
Or you can say to hell with both of those and just travel the galaxy in search or boosters and exotic dancers. If that is your cup of tea.
In short eve is anything that any other game is, and oh so much more. You can go anywhere. You can do anything.I think it is hard for someone who is just starting out to wrap their head around this fact even when someone tells them this. It is not until you thrust yourself fully into the game that you really realize that in eve online. You really can do anything .

Currently: 1. Make plans for galactic domination. 2. Check skill progression. 3. Check eve mail. 4. Do some level 4 combat missions. 5. Check standing to corp. 6. Recalculate how many combat missions i have to do to hit standing 8 (so i can use jump clones). 7. Spend money upgradingship/character. 8. Repeat step 4 to 7 until i get enough of it for the day (mostly after 2-3 missions).
Sometimes i mine/produce/trade, but currently that isn't as profitable as flying missions and i need the standing gains for my jump clone. Another part of my time is spent thinking up ventures that will make a lot of isk with as little time invested as possible (is harder then it sounds).
I check the forums to learn of new things, interesting things to do in the future, how to make my ship better (so i can go faster through the missions), etc.
I used to be part of a corp that was rather chat active, not anymore though.
After 18 months i have never been in 0.0 space, have not been part of an alliance, and have only been involved with the butt end of pvp (as in been blown up by pirates in lowsec space).
In short, i do in eve what i feel like, when i feel like (i have taken breaks from the game for a few weeks), it's here to have fun.
It's like Civilisation, Age of Empires, Masters of Orion, Elite, and Freelancer all rolled into one game and without the save button (this is way cooler then it sounds)!

You are a spaceship pilot in the far future in a Sci-Fi Wild West/Frontier environment.
Live your life and take it wherever you fancy.
Others are doing the same thing, some will help, many will hinder - others will destroy your ships and sometimes send you back to the clone vat.
Enjoy

Best post here. Its exactly that. Without a long term goal, short term goal, bunch of friends... you'll quit, and thats basically all there is too it.
Do what gives you the most happiness, be it Piracy, Alliance wars, Industrial stuff, Hauling (Lol) or investing.

EVE is virtual reality based in space. So, what You will do, depens on what You would like to do in space. You can live in EVE but I sugest just drop from time to time.
