Edited by: Rells on 01/06/2007 22:49:20 There is a feature missing in Eve voice that is, quite frankly, required. Quite simply the feature is to disable it entirely. I dont want it to load the DLLs or subject me to potential conversation spamming in audio and so on. Already the performance of the audio in eve is so bad that advanced PvPers have to turn it off. While playing on the test server I have noticed much slower client performance that I attribute to Eve voice at least in part.
Economically Eve voice makes no sense. Through my provider I can get a Ventrilo server that offers me 100 concurrent connections for only about $200 per year. If I consider my corporation of 117 real life individuals, many of which have multiple accounts, it makes absolutely no sense for each of them to pay a dollar a month for VOIP. For that kind of money we could run our Ventrilo server for 6 years. This is not to mention the fact that PVPU classes often have 45+ members who all need to be on voice communications. As a practicality Eve voice has abysmal performance and doesn't maintain connection out of game which severely debilitates a gang when someone disconnects. I don't know who thought up this business model but I want no part of it.
For this reason I would like a checkbox in the audio portion of Eve which is marked as needing a restart of Eve for changes to take effect. The checkbox would allow me to completely disable all of the features of Eve Voice. It wouldn't even try to see if I have a microphone or connect to the microphone or monitor audio. With this checkbox on, you wouldn't even be able to see the GUI controls for Eve Voice.
Personally I think developer time could be better spent on things like the busted corp interface, the ability to export settings in case of crash, the separation of settings from cache, preferences to limit the size of the log directories, tools to view the accumulated logs and a thousand other things that need to be in the game far more than Bombs or Eve Voice. If you cant do that then at least give me the ability to shut the thing off.

Question:
If I don't want it am I going to be forced to have it? From what Rells is saying you have no choice in the matter. Well I don't like being told I have to do something. It's only a game and there are plenty other games out there. Best not force it on ppl or you will loose alot of them. I have a couple acounts be a shame to drop them for being forced into using something I have no need for.

Rells is over-reacting quite a bit. No one is being forced to do or have anything. While I do agree with much of his reasoning, it's also not as bad as he's making it out to be.

If you don't want it at all, append the line voiceenabled=0 to your cache\prefs.ini

I disagree. CCP has signed a deal with another company for this and the code is in the client. There

1) I dont want to have to mess with an ini file. 2) There is no guarantee that this will remove the overhead associated with the feature at this time.

actually adding voiceenabled=0 in your .ini helps so the .dll doesnt load. I know htis cause the voice dll file makes eve crash when you start it in wine, but if you add voiceenabled=0 it doesnt crash.
allright, i cant be sure but as far as i know voiceenabled=0 will pervent the dll to load ---

Just from the cedega front as well. the voiceenabled=0 fixes linux/cedega issues as well. Without it cedega will launch EVE, but corp and local chat windows do not show up (as they are tied into the eve voice stuff). When the ini file entry is added, EVE operates normally.
I would love to be able to report what is happening on with the test version, but on our side of the fence (linux/mac), it breaks our wine/cedega applications so we can't test.
Personally I was surprised that there was no checkbox for the audio section regarding this. Although changing the ini file is no big deal, there a LOT of users out there who wouldn't know an "ini" from a hole in the ground, but they DO know what a checkbox is.

The point that i come back to over and over is the amount of time ccp spends to get extra money from it's costumers. Instead of improving on what we've already paid for. Or providing what we've already been promised, they spend their resources trying to find new ways to sc*****every extra buck they can from us. While it's a smart idea in a from a business standpoint, I still want the little things I have been promised.
The avatar transfers, time codes, voice service, eon magazine, character transfers, are all nice little money making extras for ccp. I'm sure they all took quite a bit of extra effort to put together and refine. Though i doubt that there is a single person in Eve that was not happy with Teamspeak or Ventrilo. Why would CCP spend all the extra time, and i'm sure it was a heck of a lot of time to write the code and orchestrate this. For profit. Straight up. Why did they feel that more profit was more important than sorting out the BPO lottery system? Or, more important the corporate divisional wallets? Because , because??? well.... nuff said... mo money... who knows what goes on behind ccp doors.... but, it appears they are hungry, can barely keep the lights on, and their socks have holes in em. Let's all throw a few bucks their way. Get em back on their feet

Actually I dont think this is a smart idea. The business model is preposterous. Anyoen who thinks that customers will fork over 12 times the cash they are forking over now just ot have it integrated into a client in a buggy, unstable and unusable way out of game is frankly bonkers. However, if CCP is going to waste its time, at least dont try and force it on me.

Edited by: Jarna on 02/06/2007 00:43:45 Mebbe CCP should just wait for Blizzard to get done with their in-game voice system and take some tips from them. To be honest, when it ocmes to bugs and making a game actually WORK, alot of people could take some tips from Blizzard.
Blizzard is 50 billion times bigger yet it has less problems than EVE. It's been around less time. Makes you wonder what they do at those offices in CCP.
I'm confidant that the Blizzard in-game voice system will be far superior to the EVE in-game voice system and that all they ahve to do is look to Blizzard for some clues as to how things need to be done.
I;m not saying be like WoW, just takes some tips from a company that has been around a long time and puts their time and effort into making a quality game that is as bug free as they can make it.

Point of clarity: when you say you see reduced preformance on the test server which you are attributing to voice I'm left wondering have they made any changes to it's state on the test server as opposed to tranq? I've found when(been a few weeks) it's active things got a little more unstable on my end but I've not used it on the test server only tranquility.

The degradation was clearly on the client side.

Thanks Plutonium, so edited :)
(Nice of you to include the folder name where prefs.ini can be found, a lot of people don't think to do that.)
I guess it would be a bit too much to ask CCP to give us a 'performance' menu where we could turn off all the things that slow EVE down by just selecting 'fastest' from a menu, instead of having to trawl through the forums for days at a time. ------ Agony Unleashed is recruiting. |

Setting it to zero still loads the DLL. How do I know this? Becuase it's locking out a channel on my sound card. Still. This makes two for Eve, because the normal Eve sound does that even when disabled. ffs :/

That's been my experience as well.

I'm absolutely sure that EVE Voice should be an OPTIONAL SEPARATE package. Who have to use it may install it, others may not. -- . |

The OP's argument makes sense. I use TeamSpeak. Works out-of-game, which is often useful. |
