Oh all talkative today are we. This is all your fault you know, several days and multiple threads of 'Destination Skillqeue this' and 'Destination Skillqeue that'. Why oh Why? you really can't like us all THAT much
I didn't post, because I was busy with the liking spree and every other spare moment I had I spent celebrating with people in RL. Not that I post that often normally anyway, but I do lurk here regularly. I also saw one small thread in GD and one in C&P, so I think you're exaggerating things a bit. I didn't read forums duringthat time though and only posted in the GD thread to explain why I did it, so maybe I missed something.
I actually do like the community as a whole and many as individuals. I'll admit that with others, at times, I wish I could reach out to them through my monitor and smack the stupid out of them, but I don't really dislike them either. I disagree with many on various issues and would never do the things they do, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate and respect them or even like them. A significant part of what makes EVE what it is is the community and the fact we have all kinds of people with us and they all have a place here. It creates a lot of tension, arguments and drama, but I view that as a good thing overall.
After saying that and considering the like spree was meant as my personal thank you aimed at the entire community, it would be disingenuous for me to start creating criteria who gets to receive the likes and who doesn't or how much each one deserves. For example I don't roleplay, but I noticed a lot of good posters and people in the roleplaying sections of the forums. Some of them put a lot of effort in the things they do, produce interesting content and their effort is important to that section of the EVE community. They deserved every like they got and in general the more active members of the community propably got more likes then the ones who aren't so active. I don't see any problem with that other than, that I can't spread the love to people who haven't posted anything.
I really don't see any problem with what I did. I avoided blanket posting in areas where the like system is actully often used to express support for a particular idea. So I didn't do it in the CSM sections or the F&I section. I also ignored the test server section and techical forum sections just to be sure I wouldn't cause even any potential problems with what I did. The only possible harm done is the random lengthening of some e-peens and the resulting e-peen envy, but that doesn't bother me and I don't think CCP could care less about that either.
Not to mention that EVE is a sandbox and CCP sets the limits, so in that spirit I'll do what I want within those limits and the rest of you will just have to deal with it. |

I understand what your saying DS but I think there was a slight oversight in your plan to spread love and good vibes.
And that is, what it means to receive a like.
As in usually seeing that liitle orange text box is a good thing while your trolling about the forums, it means someone understood what you said, agreed with your point, got the joke or just generally 'liked the cut of your jib'.
An enmasse like fest just lacks that, most likely you didn't read every post, and it quickly failed to have any meaning (except getting right up the noses of the more intolerant around here). Wake up with half a dozen notifications, Oh yes it's just DS on that mad little mission of hers/his.
I appreciatte the sentiment don't get me wrong I just think the application left something to be desired. There's probably easier and more effective ways of spreding a little of the milk of human kindness...
Anyhow all the best

It's done en masse with no consideration for content precisely for the reason of ridiculing the 'likes' system and what it represents and also just to wind up aspies. (a¦á_a¦â) ~ http://getoutnastyface.blogspot.com/ ~ (a¦á_a¦â) -áGÖÑ New Years Resolution ~ Cease thy Smacktalk GÖÑ |

I considered that beforehand, but quickly realised I often don't actually use the like system like that and it didn't fully apply to what I did anyway. I agree with many posts and get most of the obscure jokes and references, but I almost never like a post because of that. I also like post not because of their content or entertainment value but for all kinds of random reasons, so I must assume others do it too, which means there is no single yardstick for measuring and comparing likes. The system is already full of likes, that go against the purpose you use to give meaning to them. There is also the facts to consider, that what I did was a temporary thing and I gave most of the likes as an AOE effect, meaning every post in the thread got one. The end result was that everyone was liked, but the normal bumps in the likes were still clearly visible. So if your post was special, it still clearly stood out from the rest of the mass.
I'm not trying to say that you don't have a valid point, just that it's a minor issue and sort of an side issue. From the start this was my personal project and it was meaningful to me. I just hoped some others might appreciate it or at least not be bothered by it and take the likes for what they were. It was also a temporary event that lasted only for a short time during the holiday season when nothing else was really happening, so any harm done should be minimal. You have the rest of the 360+ days of a year to enjoy the illusion, that every like you recieve is because your posts are packed full of awesomesauce or that people agreed with your post 100%.
I'm open to hearing your alternative ways of doing things though, I really am, because I can't think of any good alternatives. What could be easier than sitting in front of your computer sipping a hot drink and eating pastries, while clicking buttons and skimming forum posts and posters? It doesn't require massive resources or a network of willing participants to achieve, just some dedication from a single individual. It's also quite effective, since I can reach a decent portion of the playerbase with it and a nice bonus part is that it's an active portion of the player community. If you can think of something better, I'd very much like to hear it. |
