Hi all,
I'm thinking about buying a 30" monitor, but i would like to know if i can actually run eve at the full res. I have a 7800GTX with 256meg video card, and i would like to know if there are people out there who play eve at 2560x1600 with such a card. Is the fps acceptable, or do i also need to invest in a new card to be able to play at that res?
Thanx

The only trouble with playing EVE at that resolution is the size specific fonts. I've played EVE on a 24" and I generally have my fonts large when playing at a lower resolution, so scaling up to that was just about ok.
Anything larger and i could see myself becoming frustrated with my stupid eyes and breaking my flashy new monitor.
You take what is offered. And that must sometimes be enough. |

I think a 30" would be an overkill for Eve, especially when your just using a 7800GTX, I run a 24" Widescreen DFP with a 8800GTX @ 1920x1200 with everything maxed out, even though it looks nice, from time to time you can still see blotchy pixels in the gas clouds where the color runs into each other. And also some of the texture on some of the ships is not very well done, especially with a few Amarr ships.
Also fyi in Eve / options /graphics the max res setting is 1680 x 1050

it will be fine i play eve at 1920 by 1200 no problem with an x800xl, eve is cpu limited not GFX limited- your system won't sweat over it

/edit: and yes, connection done via DVI / HDMI

Edited by: ry ry on 04/06/2007 09:12:46 it may be your monitor itself that's limiting the res, rather than the card - can you run your OS at that resolution?

As some have said, Eve is mostly cpu, not gpu. Your resolution available *should* be a feature of your videocard/ramdac/monitor, not Eve.
My main problem with Eve, running in 1650x1080, is Eve's pov doesn't maintain the correct ratio on all parts of the screen. IE, objects on the sides of the screen become oval when they should be round. Other than that, it looks great.
Given the rest of your system, I think you'd have no problems except in fleet battles (but I think most have that problem anyways and that's more to do with the shoddy UI than anyone's hardware).

Edited by: Trak Cranker on 04/06/2007 09:37:30 I play it at that resolution on a 30" on two 7800GTS's. And it runs as good as you can hope for. Dunno how much Eve takes advantage of SLI - if at all.
Letters are small, but if you are sitting at a normal distance from it, you should not have a problem.

Playing eve on a 30" screen is awesome. I have a Nvidia 8800 GTX and a DELL 3007WFP. It plays just great. no problems reading chat.
OK so 30" might be over kill.. But so what. If you can get one I would say get one.. I went from a 21" and when I sat it on my desk at home my jaw dropped to the floor. 30" to play eve with is just WOW..
Go get one.
Samsung have a new 30" monitor out which I have ready is a little better, but not much in it..

For reference I run Eve on a 8800GTS at 1900x1200 on a 24". Smooth 60-70 fps mostly.
But as said earlier it probably relies on your cpu, not the gfx.

Thanks for all the input :)
The fonts might be a problem... I'm running at 1600x1200 on and old 21" CRT atm, and i have to use the biggest font settings.
I guess I'll try to find a store where they let me try eve, so i can see for myself.

I play with a 7900 GTX on a 24" Dell wide screen at 1920x1200. I also use a Dual Core Intel CPU and am getting FPS of around 80 whilst out in space.
Everything loooks great to me.

i play eve on an intel core4 quad 128bit process or with a GeForce PeenXXXtreem 9900XL card i had smuggled out of a NASA test center on a forty foot LCD monitor using 50 gigs of RAMMASTER super ram. it runs so fast i actually prefer to have thirty Office sessions running in the background so it doesn't feel like cheating.
that said, it still runs at 3fps with the sound on.

I run in 1600x1200 :)
There's also 3 monitor setups I've seen here that run at about 4800 x 1200 and doubtless it can go much higher than that still.

Edited by: ry ry on 04/06/2007 12:24:34 apparently when CCP give out promo shots to mags and stuff, they render them at massive resolution on screen and join them together in-house.
i'd hazard a guess that they can get their res over 7000x10000 (or whatever the proper aspect ration should be)

Yeah, as far as I know, Eve picks up the resolutions avaliable on your desktop. Even any custom ones you might create(good for getting the right HD resolution for movies).
Either that or I can select 2560*1600 by pure magic.

I play eve at 2560*1600 using a 8800GTX and a 30" DELL 3007WFP-HC, its awesome and framerates in station is in the 150+ range and in space usually stays over 90. That is all measured using the ingame FPS-meter (which may be wrong).
However having a single client on a 30" fullscreen is all nice, but probably not any "better" that you would have on a 24" (which is a LOT cheaper). 30" Eve goodness really shines when you have 4 1280*768 clients open side by side, that rocks compared to toggling between them as i did on my old 22" CRT.
If you have RL isk to burn, I strongly recommend the Dell 3007WFP-HC, it is an awesome monitor.
