Over the weekend I decided to play around with tracking down players using my scanner so I could get fast at doing so. While I was out scanning around and tracking people down, I kept seeing odd things pop up on my scanner, mainly an inconsistent amount of drones compared to the number of people in the system. So I decided I would try finding the drones instead (hey, free money!), but that was near impossible just using the scanner.
Luckily I had some skills in Science, so i was able to fit a cruiser with a probe launcher. I grabbed some scan probes and went hunting.
What I have found is that there is a HUGE amount of space junk sitting out there waiting to be picked up. I claimed close to 100 abandoned drones over the weekend, and these aren't just some light scout drones that some newbs warped off and left behind, I am talking about full sets of 5 Wasp II heavy drones, etc. These drones are floating out in the empty space between normally warpable objects.
So these drones were fun to track down (though sometimes it took forever to fly to them after warping to their general location), but there was also some other stuff out there that I could see on my ship scanner but never got a report on them via the probes, and these were Cargo Cannisters. Hundreds upon hundreds of cargo cannisters floating in the empty spaces, and me not able to probe them. Would these show up with the other probe types so that I could warp to them? For instance the Ladar Comb probes and whatnot?
My final wondering is how much lag it is contributing to the game overall to constantly keep track of essentially dead items? I only poked around in a few systems, but easily saw hundreds of abandoned drones and page after page of cargo cannisters (the jetcan kind, not the secure kind) just floating around out there, all alone.

your activities remind me abit of the snales in my pond (the Viviparus contectus) they keep it fresh and clean
to answer you questions: i don't think its possible to probe containers at all, the problem tho are those in belts especially in ice-belts (e.g. Teonosude icebelt) where you get a 30 seconds delay when warping in. i think ccp should finaly implement a solution to this problem like a 'half-value time' (this the right word?) which would mean that containers which are not used for X time pop automaticaly.
i dont like the idea to make em probe-able tho simply cus people use it to e.g. store valuable items temporarily in systems without stations (0.0), which is fair and fine.

I did something similar 6 or 7 months ago in New Caldari, found someones SS there about 7 or 8 T2 heavy drones there and a can, the can wasnt anchored at all, and as i wasnt sure about unachored rules regarding looting, i left it alone, didnt really want to though as i cargo scanned it and it helld about 20 T2 BPC's of various ships.
Didnt really wanna risk getting podded by concord as i had a full head of +3's, which, 6 or 7 months ago, was a fortune for me :)
Mind, its still a fortune now lol

Just a few clarifications:
If a can in unanchored anyone can scoop it anywhere. It has no ownership.
And even if it did, Concord does not pod. You will never lose implants to Concord, or any other NPC.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

Hmm sounds intersting, whats the smallest ship this kind of thing can be done in? I just took a look at probe launchers and they seem to require alot of cpu..

I was doing this in hi-sec on a whim, so I set up a cruiser with nothing but a probe launcher and an afterburner on it (can't do MWD yet).
Using recon probe launcher cause it is faster than the other one. I just warp near a moon, drop the 10 AU probe and see what hits. If there is a bunch within 5 AUs I will drop the AU probe so I get more accurate scan results.
Not as much money to be had as in mining or other stuff, but at least it is interesting cause you aren't just staring at your can waiting for it to fill up. Might try playing around with other probes (and of course I still need to get Astrometric Pinpointing once I get the MWD skills finished up).
At the very least you could spend a couple of hours doing it and fill up on spare drones if you don't mind having a grab bag assortment

When I first got my hauler, I went out and collected unanchored cans for a couple of hours. You know the ones "<Blah blah corp is recruiting...contact..blah blah blah>"
I was bringing them in repackaging and selling them. Sometimes there'd be an item or two inside. I figured I was doing the world a favour cleaning up grafitti.
I didn't make a lot by today's standards, but back when I was a poor noobie...well that was different.

You can do this in frigates. Three factions (not the Amarr) have frigates with bonuses towards Astrometrics so they can scan faster (Heron, Imicus and Vigil).
While you can use cruisers, they don't have bonuses to scanning.
The only other ships with scanning bonuses are covert ops (not the stealth bombers).

I forget to load drones up all the time before leaving a mission... I guess other people must have the same problem. :)

IIRC the Minmatar astrometrics frigate is the (aptly named) Probe, not the Vigil. just to note. Exploring's on my list of "things to try out" that I haven't got to yet... hope there's still a few orphaned drones left by then
