ok i seem to have got the hang of probing and have so far found numerous unstable wormholes and various npc 's to kill, however i have not been able to find anything else, which leads me to ask :- How do you decide where to scan? ie zone/area/planet/system, do you just fire up the engines and stick a pin in the star map. i am traing up my skills for exploration am midway with most of them but still a decent find eludes me..........

Always best to check the map for low pop systems for scanning. Also make sure your filters are set correctly. Low sec offers more reward and more NPCs in sites. As well as unexpected "friends." |

Per above poster; if you find yourself less travelled systems the cahcne of finding something "good" increases by a lot. Open the map (and flatten it), then colour the stars by population and number of jumps, find the more quiet areas and probe away. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. |

Right... So use your map features an filters to the best of your ability. Use http://evemaps.dotlan.net/ to compare the results of your Eve Map if preferred for safety.
I find a system at the end of a pipeline, I have one chain of systems I use for ratting in NPC sov, and the pipe I have picked out has about 12 systems that are low population. However, They are often bubbled gates, and activity in some of the systems. Usually ones near or with stations in them. The trick is, to take your time, use your maps, like this one helps as well, http://www.ombeve.co.uk/Eve_Regions.pdf and use your cloak... IDK if you have a t2 cov ops or not... If you do, then you really dont have too much to worry about, IF you take your time, and work each system.
My technique I use is simple. I use bookmarks, and enter the systems when they are low in activity. When I enter a 0.0 pipe for the first time, I will use a special fit frigate, not a cov ops... I use a rifter, with special rigs that allow me to warp in speeds at 10 au/sec, and I can align in 2-3 seconds... I fit a mwd, and a Medium shield extender just in case there is an interdictor or bubble and a camp. I never burn back to the gate... in a frigate. I have lost a few frigs this way. I usually wait out my cloak, and when I appear on the other side of gate, I take note of the direction I am already facing. still cloaked, I find the nearest celestial to align and warp off to... Usually, there is something in a similar direction to warp to. This prevents me from doing a 180, which takes more time to align to.
If there is a bubble or interdictor, fly smart, all you need is to keep distance, and burn away from him. My MWD rifter moves in access of 2500 m/sec and I can usually manage to get out of his disruptor bubble and/or disruptor range. I then simply pull distance and warp away.
Each system I enter for the first time, I make bookmarks in. each gate has a 175km plus observation safe, and a safe off grid 450km plus but withing 14au for scanning for clearing the gate. I don't do this to every gate in that system, just the ones I tend to use.
When I make these safes, with a cheap ol frig... not a 20 mil plus t2... can you can still loose a t2 cov ops in a gate camp... I tend to bounce from safe to safe. then to the gate if it is clear. Only when Im being careless, impatient, or not paying attention, will I get popped or tackled and ransomed... So learn from others mistakes, and take ur time.
When you find system with 0 in local feel free to relax a lil, but always have your local open, extended and not stacked so you can observe it. when someone comes in behind you, simply cloak up, or warp to your safe, or move to the next system. I have been popped out in 0.0, but only when I rush.
When you get all your safes made, place them in a folder in your people and places. That way, you can extend said folder, and see all the systems and safes related to that chain or pipeline. Then you can bring out your cov ops and probe with peace of mind... Make a safe to sit at while cloaked after you deploy your probes as well. Make sure it is NOT INLINE with two gates or planets etc... use your f10 map, but in system map mode, when making accurate safes. This way you can place a safe where you want it, using triangulation. :)
Hope this helps. |

Not really because, the ships that have a scan bonus aren't capable of actual combat, it's a bit of a gap in the ship lineup and we've asked CCP many times to fill it but nothing so far. There is a T3 sub system that gives a probing bonus and they can fight quite well if set up for it. thing is that it's a T3 which isn't easy to train or pay for as a newer player and it's very much overkill in high sec exploration, while being so expensive that it'll hurt would you lose one in low sec, WH or 0.0
You have 3 options;
- use two ships, one to scan and one for combat. Not very easy to do on a single account tbh. - get into a T3 with the right subs - use a ship that's very good at combat while not needing rigs for it and then fit gravi rigs for your scanning (droneboats, most BCs) so your probing isn't [i]that[/i ]bad. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. |

i am a single account holder, at this moment i could not justify 2 accounts as i am still very much wet behind the ears. at the moment i scan in my heron, go and kill in my caracal, salvage in my catalyst ( i think its the catalyst ) which is fine if i don't go too far and keep everything close by to use. making 15 jumps to scan and probe is ok but then its 15 jumps back tp get cruiser to kill, then back again to get salvager.
its early days for me and am learning all the time, the information provided in peoples replies is so helpful. |

Having been an explorer since the start, the best 2 non t3 all in one exploration ships are the Arbitrator and the Myrmidon
They both use drones to fight, so you can fit support modules in the high and mid slots, whilst, both ships use armour tank, which leaves your low slots free. Since there are no exploration modules in low slots, you should be able to tank pretty well if you run combat sites.
Basically with your Abri or Myrm, fit a scanner, a salvager, a tractor beam (optional), cloak (optional for low sec), drone link upgrade (optional) or guns if you prefer extra dmg.
Low slots fit a code breaker, analyzer (optional), AB (for high sec), WMD (for low sec), and cap rechargers of omnidirectional tracking device for your drones.
Low slots for tanking.
Alternatively, fit a scanner to a Drake and scan only combat sites, and skip the rest
With decent scanning skills, you should have no problem scanning down sites, use a sisters probe launcher if you are getting 85% on the hard to scan sites.
Until you get into a t3 or a Pilgrim or a Ishtar, these ships will be your main exploration ships.
If you want to run some exploration, in high sec, low sec or WH, contact me in game, i have regular fleets going with a couple of friends, so you are most welcome to join |

You can use ANY battle cruiser for lower lv wormholes, c3 with good skills, c2 with noob skills and lower, to do your scanning for sites, and killing and salvaging. A cyclone, cane, harby, drake, all can work... I wouldnt bother with a cruiser class... but thats just me, Im biased and jaded.

This will help you with your map knowledge and or skills. :)
Say I'm interested in using a cyclone for such. Or being you are caldari, lets use the ferox or drake... Fill 5 slots with guns or missiles. one with a coak, a probe launcher, one salvager...
med slots, fit a mwd... and whatever if shield tanked, of armor tanked, which i prefer, leaving med slots available for analyzer, codebreaker, etc...
lows fit tank and gank...
There ya go. just fit it, watch your local in low null sec, and in wh;s scan your d scan every 3-5 seconds... :)

thanks First, you need to decide whether you are going to run many types of sites or only a specific one. An important thing to remember is that sites have a constant signal strength, so you can 'farm' a particular bandwith (sites do share signal strengths). I personally look for DED 4/10 sites. So I stick in the regions where the ded 4/10s are found. As far as the actual route across the region, I do indeed pick a few random waypoints from the star map, usually about 25-30 jumps total and get to it. I'll usually find 2-4 4/10's along a route that long.
Some explorers like myself cherry pick their favorite bandwidth, some run everything looking for all the escalations/faction spawns they can. I've heard success with both methods, but prefer cherry picking personally. St Mio's DSP guide will explain more if you're interested in learning a bit more. In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has angered numerous people for many different reasons and is widely considered as a 'bad move'. |

Um. I don't think attempting CL3 wormholes in a battlecruiser is a good idea. You would need a battleship minimum. In addition, at class and above you start to run into warp scramblers...
Of course this doesn't mean you can't make a fantastic profit in lower-class wormholes; salvaging the melted nanoribbons is what you're after and they have the potential to spawn on any sleepers, even the weakest. And they can sell for 6-7 million a pop.
When I was a newbie, my main source of income was wormhole-diving. Just check Wormnav when you enter a new wormhole. If there are no NPC kills recently, go nuts! If you launch that site from the in-game browser you can even have it automatically give you the info for the system you're in just by clicking the "update location" button.
But whatever you do... DONT go into a wormhole without a probe launcher and BOOKMARK THE ENTRANCE FROM BOTH SIDES! |
