I've noticed that some people blow up their ship on purpose for the insurance, especially when the term is about to end. Perhaps some improvements are needed?

It works like this:
People argue that since they paid 30m to insure a BS, and paid 100m for it for a total cost of 130m, it makes sense to self destruct it to get a payout of 105m to buy and insure another BS rather then just insuring the same BS again. The first costs you another 25m isk (you get 105 and pay 100+30), the latter costs you 30m isk (you pay 30).
However, it's hardly convenient unless you live in high sec empire. It doesn't factor in rigs, it only works at certain levels of mineral prices. [center] Old blog |

Stupidity is not an exploit. Blowing up a ship when its insurance is near top running out is stupid, as it doesn't actually gain you anything since the value of what you destroy is larger then the isk gained from destroying it.
Not true. You can buy a Dominix, insure it platinum, and when it pops you get nearly all of your money back (Including what you paid for insurance) as long as you take your fittings off beforehand. Alternatively, you can spend another 20M for more insurance. So in essense, by self destructing before it expires, you're saving yourself about 15-20M ISK.
Now if you've got rigs you're not going to do that. ------

edited reply. Yes it can make sense if you're in an empire system with BS for sale at low cost and operating solo for example.
Otherwise it's probably not worth it for the small difference it makes. I know that I'd rather see the minerals used to make another ship for another pilot of my corp to fly then wasting one full load of minerals on replacing a bs and gaining 5m isk in doing it.

If you have reasonably fast empire access ships = isk. Not everyones living in the farthest reaches of 0.0.
Edit@ Rod Blaine: Aye, if you are in a regional, rather closed market, i fully agree. If you anonymiously buy of empire markets *shrugs*

Not so much for most, though. The entrance to most 0.0 regions is usually pretty heavily camped by one side or other. A complete, fitted BS on location where I need it is worth vastly over it's actual value, due to the hassle of moving another one in. Time isn't the really big factor, it's the risk of it getting bubblecamped on the way in.
For the sake of saving 5 million or so isk ever few months per ship (the equivalent of two rats), it's just not worth it. --------

Well if it's only an exploit for the newer players I guess it doesn't matter all that much. :P

Is it done? Yes Is it an exploit? Hardly. Does it matter at all? No.
Move along
Where it matters (in 0.0 where low-end minerals are difficult to transport), it's not done by anyone with an IQ above 50 because ships are more expensive than their insurance (exactly due to the scarcity of low-end minerals), and thus can be sold for more than the insurance.

I always selfdestruct my BS when they are coming up to the end of their insurance period, unless they are selling for more than they insure for, which is unlikely.
1/ Cause I probably fancy a change and existing BS is just non-liquid assets.
2/ Cause if it isn't dead within the alotted 12 weeks, it wasn't trying hard enough.
3/ Cause explosions are prettyful, and result in killmails which confuse killboards.
