Edited by: Constantine Arcanum on 10/06/2007 22:55:04 I've been playing guitar steadily for 2 and a half years now, on a Fender American Stratocaster. I'm starting to get a little bored of it naturally- I would never sell it, it's great for playing rock n' roll on because of the single coil pickups- but that's it. The twangy sound doesn't do any other genre justice, and I'm not buying humbuckers for it incase I mess it up.
SO basically I am looking at getting another guitar. Gibson / Epiphone looks REALLY good, I played an Epiphone Les Paul and a Gibson at my local guitar shop (Reidys in Blackburn( and there's not that much between them, so I'm going to get an epiphone.
Now I need to decide between these:
Epiphone Firebird Studio Linkage My favourite lookswise but I am yet to play it.
Epiphone Les Paul Standard Linkage What can I say, quality but a bit boring.
BC Rich Warlock Bronze Edition Linkage Don't laugh at the BC Rich, I played it and was really impressed, I wouldn't be buying it for the looks!
What do the guitarists out there think?

Edited by: LVSOCOM on 10/06/2007 23:55:49 I started the same way and had a Strat for my first two years or so too. They are good, but I know exactly what you mean.
My choices were etheir a Les Paul or an Explorer. I wanted to go with one of the ESP guitars because I liked their sound (even though it is a little limited compared to what I have now) but I happened across this for 450$ and couldn't pass it up. Epiphone Les Paul Classic Birdseye It played pretty good when I bought it (I thought it was pretty awesome at the time) but after playing some stuff with a similar body type (big mahogany electrics) with Seymour Duncan pickups in them I saved up a bit of cash and changed out alot of what was on it from the factory.
If you want to really get the most out of a good epiphone, play one that really sounds good (I played a few that aren't very good at all) and change out as much of the electronics and hardware on it. The stock pickups aren't weren't anywhere near as clear as the Seymours, for instance if you were to strum a chord, hold it, and pick a note within it, it was kind of hard to hear. The Seymours make it alot clearer and make it much eiser to play accents to notes without whailing on it. Another thing that realy made teh difference in sound was having the guitar specifically "set-up" for the strings I decided on ( Ernie Ball Skinny top Heavy Bottom). On mine I changed: +Changed tuners to Spertzel Locking Tuners (HIGHLY reccomended, the factory ones came out of tune easy-- these never do from normal playing) +Neck humbucker to Seymour Duncan 59' Classic +Bridge humbucker to Seymour duncan Screamin Demon +All pots and switches to Switchcraft parts (or another good name brand, removed a noticable amount of hum and buzz from the factory ones)
I mostly play rock/metal on this but I've had a few blues players and other genres play on this and they really liked it. Has a versatile range; from godsmack (dead-on) to doobie bros.
I'd say go with the paul and put money into it over time, it does wonders for the sound. :)

I've got an Epiphone Dot and while I suck at guitar (i'm a bassist), it feels really nice to play, and sounds very nice crunched up through my Fender amp. Sounds too twangy clean for my taste, but that's just me.
I bought my best friend an Epiphone Les Paul Classic for his 19th birthday, and he honestly prefers my Dot for most applications. The Les Paul isn't a bad guitar, it sounds good clean and driven, but the weight is all messed up. It's way too heavy towards the back and the neck tries to ride up and smack you in the face when you're playing with a sling.
But I STRONGLY suggest you go to a guitar shop and play them all yourself beforehand. Don't spend all that money and not know exactly what you're paying for.
I'd go for the Firebird. The Les Paul is too common, the Warlock looks like a Rorschach test, the Firebird looks awesome. And despire what people say, yes, playing a guitar is 50% about how cool you look.

I love this guitar but Ibanez Artcore series has a few shortcoming like skipping on the machine heads and the strength of the output jack. I've put and additional 250.00 into mine replacing various parts.
My second
This is one actually aint a bad guitar for what I paid for it.. looks cheap as hell in this pic but after getting rid of the stupid "whammy bar" and adding a tremolo spring, so it can handle the heavier slinkies, its actually really fun to play. Looks even Better with a Betty Paige decal on it.
My Acoustic
Great guitar verrrry nice preamp.
and since I dont have the need to nor the money for it I play through a Roland Cube 15 the biggest lil amp ya ever heard.
Not that there's anything wrong with teh warlock and the tbird.. but personally I would go for the Les Paul Standard as an all around guitar and more bang for your buck... who knows you may find your self going back to your Strat.. lol.
oh btw... a word of warning...buying one guitar is great... two is neato... more than two and your a border line obsesive collector who just HAS to go to every pawn shop and guitar box store looking for another guitar, just because.

I have one of these. The good old Fender Stratocaster. Never really learned to play anything else than the national anthems. I got it like 15 years ago, more for looking cool than for making music. The plan did worked well for some time though. |

Edited by: Miss Anthropy on 11/06/2007 06:52:55 Edited by: Miss Anthropy on 11/06/2007 06:52:31 If you're going to go for an Epiphone Les Paul and you're obsessed with sound quality then, like that other guy recommends, you'll have to change practically all the internals. They're built in Korea from cheap electronics to further cut costs, then shipped off to the US where they are given a very minimal inspection; then they slap a Limited Lifetime Warranty on them. Epiphone like to boast about how great they were back in the 50's and 60's, but since they've been bought out by Gibson basically all they do is make very cheap Gibson copies.
Considering the cost of all the upgrades you may have to make if you're that way inclined, you may as well save up for a Gibson BFG. You can get them for between ú650 and ú750 in the UK. Basically it's a stripped down (but genuine) Gibson Les Paul with a P90 and a Burstbucker rather than the standard 2 humbuckers.

I use both about equally. I usually have the red one tuned to D (DGCF) and the black one tuned to drop C (CGCF). Both are sex in equal amounts. Extra jumbo frets, extra thing neck, active EMG pickups on both. Raar.
And to the OP, Warlocks just look stupid tbfh. If you're going for the metal look (as well you should), get something that actually looks good, like this or this.

Rickenbackers are definetely very nice. They're a bit too bulky for my taste, but man, what nice, thick sound.

Edited by: Pwn4ge P4nts on 11/06/2007 13:57:25 Don't bother with the epiphones, the chance that you will end up with one of the very few that actually sound any good without exchanging all its parts is very slim. Get a nice used gibson les paul instead. It feels so much more "right" and substantial.
Have never played a firebird so can't comment. (But they look cool)
Edit: Oh, and the bc rich. If you are not buying it for the looks, you will certainly find better guitars for less.

Very good guitars sir
DF 404
I play the DF 404 it's pretty much exactly the same, except this is the ESP Japan version and instead of being trans black its full black. It's amazing in every way I love it.
I found it in my local guitar shop, saved for it and promptly became the enemy of every bassist in town when i bought it

It's going to be a fairly dramatic change in neck widths, going from any kind of strat to the gibson ( or gibson copy ). I come from a classical background, so naturally I much prefer the wider neck and string spacing of the gibsons / epiphones. I have an Epiphone Sheraton , like the "dot" mentioned above, it's a copy of the Gibson 335. I absolutely love it. Plays great, intonation is dead on , and the bridge and tuners are solid.
Have fun :)

Another vote for ESP/LTD. I own a Viper 400 and love it. Great looks, great sound, competitive price.
I also have a Gibson SG Standard that I adore. I would definitely buy a Gibson over an Epi. Yes, they're "mostly the same" but if you're like me and you will only ever own a few guitars in your lifetime, you may as well get the one worth keeping a lifetime. If you knowhwati'msayin'
