Edited by: Ealiom on 11/06/2007 16:04:28 Edited by: Ealiom on 11/06/2007 16:00:41 Most of us are aware of just how bad Dell are. Other than there monitors I could never appreciate there machines.
I'm building a new machine soon so ive been reading up on as much as I can. Future trends, the progression of the new DDR3 standard vs current DDR2's - ATi and NvIDIA - Intel and AMD - OCZ and Corsair.
So with my wealth of information I settle on a build that would last me for approximately 3 years and more importantly a price.
So for ****s and giggles I decided to check the Dell website just to see how much it would cost me to have a similar spec'd machine get the Dell name branded into it.
After choosing all the various options I noticed this little nugget. Look under memory do you see how much extra it would cost to increase the memory from 2Gb to 4gb ú705.00 thats approximately $1350 for our US chums.
Now if youd kindly follow this link You will see a set of 2Gb RAM sticks that come in at a mere fraction of the cost ú68.52
Edit Since the link doesnt seem to work search for it if you can be bothered 2Gb OCZ Platinum Series Rev2. DDR2 PC6400/800Mhz 4-4-4-12
I knew Dell were bad but over ú600 more expensive than any other e-retailer. Seriously
If I have stopped one person from buying a Dell computer with my little post of outrage then i'd consider this a success. Harken to me people Never buy anything from these thieves in suits. Id consider your money better spent by substituting it with your toilet roll

Its because when they held a poll on what product people wanted, a Linux computer won by a massive margin because both corporations and end-users want a reliable, low-cost prebuilt PC with hardware support.

embarrassing indeed. I tallied up the machine spec I want. How much it would cost and how much Dell sells it for. I had to take some things from the Dell machine such as the second 8800GTX but i had to add money to it as the monitor was not the same etc.

All computer companies overcharge for parts. Its how they make money. They're ripping you off because most people don't know how to build a computer and they do.
Same thing happens in the auto industry. A $200 repair would cost you $40 if you bought the parts and did the job yourself.

Its not just computer companies, the entire Western economy is based on engineered lifetimes for components. It was our solution to combat the another depression.

Lets have a name and shame with owners of Dell computers.
To start off;
Trevedian
Didnt Foyle have one as well? Im sure there was an outcry a while back when someone opened up their brand new dell pc and found a lovely 'factory refurbished' sticker on their HDD. Pure Class, but then i guess you cant throw a computer at someone down a phone line, so they have themselves covered.

I'm perfectly happy with my Dell. I could of gotten a much better computer for much cheaper if I had built it myself (like one of my friends did with me advising), but at the time I didn't know how (but I do now). They offer decent computers for the average person.
If you want to see a real piece of ****, look into Compaq. I hate those damn computers. My mom has one and its a pure crap.

Ahahahaha... you like Dells huh? I work with Dells, here in IT; they are the worst computer I've ever used. We had 30 SX270's have some capacitors pop on them, and we spent the next 6 months figuring out which were the faulty ones and which survived.
**** Dell, and up yours.

Edited by: Camilo Cienfuegos on 11/06/2007 22:33:21 Edited by: Camilo Cienfuegos on 11/06/2007 22:31:30 Dell are somewhat rip-off merchants - but less so on their prebuilds than on their support. Approximately 2 years ago I was working in an office kitted out completely with Dell dekstops (they were purchased as part of a cut-price deal when the business was filling it's racks). Nothing fancy: All P4 2.4's, 512Mb DDR, the usual lark. On one of these machines, the CPU fan died (thank god it was a P4 and not one of that generation of AMD) and so we brought it round to the bench to replace. Low and behold, the cheeky buggers had changed the standard two pin fan connector by inserting a central "dummy" pin... Upon contacting Dell, we (with a business account, I might add) were quoted ú65.000(!!!) for an 80mm ball bearing fan with the "Dell" connector. It's like Elonex all over again!
So yeah... if you thought a 100% markup on RAM was bad, how about a 1000% markup on a fan!

??100%?? That would still have been day light robbery but it would not warrant my disgust.
Dell RAM ú700 e-retailer RAM ú65
over 1000% of what a smaller company is offering.
And im pretty certain the RAM that Dell offers is somewhat, how can i say this ******* ****
Im used to companies like Dell building these bog standard machines and selling them on at a premium. But at over x10 times the cost. Thieves!
I suspect the number is not large but I can bet some people have actually bought those systems online. Dell have diddled them out of over ú600 on the RAM alone!!! Its sickening.
It wouldn't bother me so much if they were selling fruit or coca cola. Everyone knows the price they should be paying for those everyday items. No one looks at a can of coke and thinks wow ú6 for this okay. They can get away with it because they pray on peoples ignorance. There are lots of words for people like that.
Thank the stars for teen rated forums.

I've got an old one lying around here, a PIII I think. I've got Linux on it atm, so it's not running awful. Its a bugger to upgrade with anything though- everything except the RAM and cards is pretty much welded in to place --------

I was of the impression that dell had dropped hardware support for Linux machines as well as software support.Linky
However If you go windows Dell support is pretty good. Particularly if you buy complete care. And yes tehy will pass that price on to you via the cost of hardware.

I own a Dell laptop. Sure I could have gotten a similiar one from another company like Sager at a cheaper price but I couldn't accidentally drop it or spill something on it and expect to get it fixed. Dell has that kind of warranty.

Dell where I work and they suck real bad, XP on them with 256mb of RAM. I need Outlook and Excel open all the time to do my job and the machine takes around 20 minutes to boot due to all the network security crap that is on it (Government computer networks suck).
How can they claim it's built for XP with only 256mb of RAM!

Edited by: Janu Hull on 13/06/2007 16:28:29 I'll be shot for this, but screw it. My current rig is an out of the box Gateway with nothing more than additional RAM and an upgraded soundcard and gfx card.
No trouble at all, and runs sweet. P4 2.93GHz (factory overclock). I stuck 2.25 GB of RAM in it, a SoundBlaster SB Live! card, and I had to get a PCI-E ATI x1600 Pro 512MB card the night I bought it (all my old cards are AGP).
The best way to get your money's worth out of a major manufacturer is to buy the baseline model without all the bells and whistles, and install them yourself.
The only Dell component on my current machine is the 20" widescreen LCD monitor. An absolute bargain at $400 when I bought it through the architectural firm I work for.
The tower set me back $700, the card was another $300, and the RAM I upgraded over time. 2x 512MB, 1x 1GB, and a 256MB stick.
