I was wondering if anyone knows of a foot pedal that connects up between my guitar and amp and allows me to record riffs that I can play back after. I used to record simple riffs on an old stereo (years ago) and then play lead guitar along to the riff. I'm just wondering if there's any foot pedals that can do something similar so I can play along to it.

Hmm a pedal. Never thought of that. I normally run all my recordings through my computer. Simple AUX in port in your sound card can be used to take in guitar. Then in such programs such as Cubase you can record them in and fiddle about. Distortion can come from your amp or whatever before you connect it to the computer. Alternative to using a pedal to do playbacks.

I had thought of that but I don't want to have to upgrade my PC further. I'd need to get a new sound card with a front panel that allows for guitar cables, then fork out for Cubase which is probably stupidly expensive. Besides upgrading my PC, I really don't fancy having to learn a complex music package. Foot pedals are much easier; fiddle with dials, step on, step off. And they don't crash, need restarting/rebooting or need patches to fix bugs.

Digitech JamMan and the Boss Loop Station are 2 that come to mind. But there are many more depending on price range and other features you may or may not be interested in. Look hear and search under Pedals & Effects.

I would suggest getting a line 6 pod. This means that you can install the pod onto your PC, plug your guitar lead into the pod and then the pod runs into your USB port.
Ive used them to record songs, and its very good for it, you can record pretty much anything through it with any kind of effect you can want.

This model costs about ú230 so I'm not sure if thats beyond what you want to spend but i think there is smaller versions available.
Also on a software note, there is cheaper software than cubasis that is alot easier to use. Cubasis used to be very good but I find the latest versions are a bit too fiddly. For quick basic recordings try using Acid or Audacity which are both pretty good and simple to use

@ the guy above me.
The POD doesn't do that. Line6 might do recording software, but they aren't in any way related to the POD, at lesat as far as I know. Of course, this could just mean that Line6 have screwed me.
@ the OP. Yeah, the Boss Loopstation is something along the lines of what you need. Don't buy a second rate brand, they'll always suck.

Cool... I've had a look at the Loop Station online and it seems just what I was looking for. Thanks for the heads up.

Line 6 do make the pod please check the link, which takes you to the line 6 website with the POD xt on it.
However i probably worded what i meant wrong, I didn't mean you can record into it, rather use it as a preamp to run the guitar into your PC without needing a guitar jack port added onto your PC. So you record through the amp into your pc and play it back.

I used to have a Zoom pedal that allowed me to do that, along with a built in drum machine.

Not sure what country your from. Thats where I used to buy all my ****zle. Decent recording gear, fair prices.
Just get a pedal board. some of them have all the inputs you need as well even for recording.

Yeah, i have that problem ,so ive learned to play riffs and lead at the same time
Your little finger is 4tw in this case.
But if youve really gotta, you can some s****y amps/pedals with USB connections that allow you to play directly into your computer. But imo they never sound "Real", kinda kind the backing guitar to a pop song :/

I don't like the idea of plugging my guitar into a computer to play. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to music. Guitar -> Effects Pedals -> Amp = music. I'd prefer to play without some of my pedals too, but in my house I don't have the luxury of turning my amp up full to get classic overdrive sounds, so I have to resort to pedals for overdrive/distortion.
That Boss pedal sounds the business. Costs a fair bit though (even the lowest end variant).

Yeah i totall agree tbh, the less gizmos u put your guitar into the better, i stick to my trusty marshall stack and jackhammer pedal
Besides you loose the true accustics of a room when you go the tech route for music anyway.
What genre of music do your guys play out of curiosity?

EDIT: Just looked around for Cubase and saw to my dismay that it costs ú500. Adding to that a new soundcard and I'm looking at around ú600-ú650. A ú100 foot pedal that could do similiar is definately a cheaper option. All I want to do is record some riffs, not rewrite Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
About the sound card, you can use a normal sound card with that small cable thing, you jsut have to find an adapter. that goes from the fat cable to the small one which I use. Cubase you could err get another *wink* way.
About learning the program doesn't take too long, and you can include drums, bass and other things.

uhh... what about a preamp? using a pedal as a substitute to get distortion isnt exactly traditional

Also, if you want to play along to a backing track, you should (imo) use pc software, or if you cant afford it, buy yourself a cheap 4-track w/ built in mixer.
Recording 2 sets of guitar before they go through your hardware means youll have the same sound on each too, which wont be too good.
