Well, I'm currently on BT, and having a few problems. Every night at 7 the speed drops from 4mb to 512k for no reason. I have phoned twice, and spent around an hour on the phone, culminating in them telling me that they will call back later after they have tested some more stuff. So basically, a big **** off.
I'm tired of this. So I've been looking at different broadband providers.
Recently Virgin Media sent through their nice little letter about their own broadband service. I have yet to check out prices on various things, but on paper it at least looks reasonably good.
Does anyone else have their 20mb Unlimited service? If so, is it good? Is it bad? Are there any other UK providers out there that people could recommend with at least 4mb Unlimited bandwidth service?
Thanks.

We switched from virgin to bt a while back, mainly because virgin medias tv... just isnt as good as sky.. their Internet was much faster than ours is currently, and didn't suffer from that problem, which isn't just you fyi.. i get it as well. But, their tv and Internet would cut out at random intervals for the entire day over whole areas and they would never give an explanation.. seems the best way to get reliable way to get broadband these days ts to avoid the big companies and go for the smaller companies faster more expensive service. -------------------------------------------- Stay away from my signature all of ya!!! Hmm actually, now that you linked that I just realised. I only have 4mb because my line to BT wasn't good enough, or was too far away to get 8mb...

Well to start with BT are upgrading there entire network so that 20 meg connections will be possable for most if not all. Also i had a similar problem with my 2 meg line where the dowload rate would suddenly drop off and at times it could take hours for it to come back.
Also i advise you do 2 things.
Find out your 'Signal Strength'. If you are too far away from the local server then your signal will be weak and erratic.
OR
Check to see if your line leads STRAIGHT to the main line in your home[the line that enteres your house]. If there are other connections on the same line then your signal strength WILL be reduced. If you look at your system and see that othere phone sockets [including unused ones] are connected to the same line as your broadband then thats your problem. I had this one and the above and to fix it i got to the main entry point to my house and added a new line leading from it to my computer. Problem was fixed immediatly.

I have the exact same problem! everynight without fail my connection will drop from 2mbps to 256kbps
My only reasoning for this is that now imposing speed limits during peak hours, its still enough speed to surf and play eve, but not much else which is kinda a pain.
I would switch ISP but i still find BT to be one of the most realiable out there bar none, had maybe 1 DT in 6 years and that was only because there stupid mesh system didn't work -

AOL and Talktalk do exactly the same. 6/7pm on the hour *clunk* crappy connection.

I helped a colleague get set up with Be, and she says they're fantastic too.
I'm on Virgin myself. The connection itself is pretty reliable which is fortunate because the company is appalling. The customer service is the very worst I've encountered. Expect to be lied to, and to have to make multiple phone calls to get anything done.
Also bear in mind if you download a lot of data in an hour they will nerf your connection down to 25% of its speed. If you ring technical support, they will deny this and pretend its a problem with your router

Hopefully I can be of some assistance in this matter as I have been a cable broadband customer for approx 10yrs now (Blueyounder/Telewest/Virgin Media) and also worked for BTs network division.
1. If you can get cable broadband installed...do it now! The virgin service is now at a max speed of 20Mbit at startup cost of ú29 for 1st 12 months (ú37 after)
In the past 10 yrs I recall only 2-3 seroius outages (4hrs or more) The max speed is not restricted by your distance from the uBR (exchange)
2. The problem with the vast majority of DSL services in the UK is the LLU is provided by BT, therefore your choice of ISP will have little or no effect on your maximum speed. The only real benefits with non BT ISPs are: bandwidth contention, service/support, cost, Usage caps/limits.
So in short:
with 20Mb cable you get 20Mb max downstream, with DSL you get the maximum your line will support but still pay for the theoretical max.
with 20Mb cable there is no usage cap, with DSL this will vary from provider to provider.
With all broadband services you will have your connection throttled at peak times (my download speed drops from 2089KB/s to 7-800KB/s from around 6pm to 9pm - ypu can thank youtube junkies for this)
Hope this helps .

If you can get BT you can use any service provider that uses BT lines.

I just switch from Virgin Media due to the poor TV quality we were getting, and also the terrible customer support. I have switched to sky, who have pretty good customer support, and there tv is great. I had problems with the internet at first but now its sorted and i was getting 12.5mb/s download at peak times.
i was with virgin for about 6 years previous to now, and there internet is very stable, hardly ever goes down (although when it does it realy does) but there alot more expensive.
We now pay slightly more for the TV, but alot less for more on the internet.
