Neil. They have a saying out in low sec. some people are more into it then others, but everyone knows it.
If its not blue, shoot it.
It's nothing personal, it's just how things are done. In low sec if its not a member of your corp or your alliance, or someone you have positive standing with, It's a hostile.
Subscribe. It's worth it.

That being said - there is a way to learn. Agony Unleashed teached PVP Basic courses - and some corps, such as fx. my own - willingly take on noobs and teach them. But we cannot protect you from the dangers of low sec and 0.0 - so if you go there, all we can do is teach you the best odds of survival.
Thanks Amanda! (My sig-pic is a link to the Agony Unleashed site.)
And you are, of course, correct. That's one reason why we ask all our students to buy at least one backup ship; our classes tend to run at a 10-20% loss rate. (Which is why we also advise people to bring a really cheap ship.)
If you don't want to risk being beaten up on by people who stack the deck against you, then stay in highsec and avoid carrying valuable cargos.

Originally by: Caios tbh, I've found the players of this game tend to display far more sociopathic tendencies than any other playerbase I've come across. you basically have to expect the worst out of everyone you come across, which is definitley offputting to a lot of people.
There is a grain of truth to this. The point that really hasn't been made though might be the same reason you went all 14 days w/o a subscription. Me I was hooked in 7, mabey less, but I remember I needed an industrial ship to move my stuff, I digress..
EVE isn't a quest. The other players are much more relavant to the success or failure of yours. Every sale, every purchase, every kill affects us all in some small way.
In EVE we the players are the protagonists and antoginists. All the really meaningful stuff is pvp, even the market.
So, don't trust anyone you just met. Be wary of all your new friends, cherish those you come to know and can tell will have your back in the fights to come. And remember it's that risk, the posibility of genuine loss that makes EVE so wonderfully addictive. If you let it even losing can be fun, as long as you do your best to put up a fight.
Come to low sec, look arround but be wary. Keep local in a seperate window. Have safe spots enjoy.

enter low sec.
get killed.
congratulate your killers + have a chat be civil about it your loss just furthered the games economy without losing ships the game would grind to a boring pointless halt.
insult the guy thats smacktalking the gatecamp because hes just making it hard on himself, a ****ed off enemy will just want to pod you for no reason to hell with the sec loss.
leave low sec.
at a later date enter low sec, greet the same campers have a chat.
get killed, -no hard feelings, be civil.
leave low sec.
at a later date enter low sec, greet the same campers have a chat.
they let you pass unnopposed thank them and be civil,
congratulations you just earned a pass to stay alive in there territory that few others have because your a regular and these people recognise that you are bringing buisness to there area buisness they wouldnt have if they kill everyone.

Have to agree with what's being posted. Also complained and moaned bitterly when I lost my first hard earned cruiser in Eifer (0.4 I think), but stuck with the game, got in to a small corp that really helped me. Eventually got 0.0 access permission, and went in with a secure cargo container and a ammo bpo. Found an out of the way system with some nice bs's, and would just haul ammo from npc station to the container when needed and keep to myself in the system. See a unfriendly, safe spot and cloak. I literally went days ratting without seeing anyone in 'local' channel.
IMHO 0.0 ended up much safer than 0.4 - 0.1...
When in high sec around Ammold, Lustrevik, Hek, I still help new players on lvl 1 missions, and if they lose a ship will give them loot and isk to refund it (depends if they're beggars or just having a tough time).
It's an amazing game, with some utter dispicable players, and some really really good guys..

If you dont want to pvp (Hey, your a 2 week old newb vs a BC. Im a 2 year old newb and I wont fight a BC in a frig), your new best friend is the "Warp core stabiliser" aka the "gtfo module".

Also, find a wealthy benefactor (Maybe you can do errands for people for isku) to give you some bucks, and get into a mining cruiser, then join a corp that'll let you inflict that cruiser on unsuspecting lowsec rocks and profit. The game gets easier quicker. ______ Unrepentant Southern Federation Cheerleader.

Neilgor, unfortunately it is always like this.
I say unfortunately because there will always be a certain type of people who go out of their way to ruin things for others. (I am being polite here!)
These people cannot mix it with the 'real' veteran players who fight 'properly', and with honour. I liken it to those players who will use cheat codes in stand alone games, and then think they are good!
But don't worry. I still believe that the majority of players are at worst indifferent to new players, and at best will willingly help.
Strangely, I have been surprised that on my odd and rare visits into empire, particularly to my 'birth' systems round Hulm, Rens etc, talking to and trying to help newbies is like pulling teeth - so different to when I started. I tend to assume they may be alts, but then why are they mining in friggies?
Yes, EvE tends to reflect the worst of RL, partly because those people who in RL go train spotting can be total w*****s, but also because, unfortunately these days, many people in RL are so vile.
That said, it IS addictive, and despite hating the griefers passionately, get skilled up, and then go kill them. They won't mind, and if they do, you can justifiably say 'tough s**t'!!

*sigh*. Here we go: My condended 18-point step by step newbie guide aka "a serious head start for the lone wolf player". THIS should be in the tutorial.
1. Subscribe 2. Make that Minnie character who has Navigation V and AB four or five, can't remember 3. Mine for a day to get some basic cash 4. Make an alt, put him in a shuttle 5. Get a really cheap frig like a Condor, Executioner for your Minnie main 6. Fit MWD (or AB at least), a small cap battery, some nanofibers or inertia stabs 7. Go to the border of 0.0 with the ALT(!) in the shuttle. Go to safespot. 8. If its safe, log on with main, quickly move your main there, too. 9. Move alt into 0.0. 10. If its free of bubbles and camps, move main to 0.0. Go to safespot. 11. Open map. Select "pirate and police ships destroyed in last 24 hours" 12. Find the biggest red blob in your 0.0 region. Go there. Bonus if its true sec is as low as possible (www.fluidorbit.co.uk lists true sec, among others) 13. Warp to belts at 100km. If its safe, loot the leftovers. Often you find NOS, launchers, BS guns and stuff worth millions. If you see ANYONE, get the fsck out. Unless he's in a shuttle - I hear they don't tank well. Keep in mind that frigs are effing flimsy but warp insanely fast. Be VERY wary of interceptors. 14. When cargo is full, get the fsck out to high sec using the alt to scout. DO NOT try to dock in 0.0 unless you know what you're doing. 15. Sell loot 16. Get a Probe (ship). Put medium secure container in. Rinse, repeat the above but this time with an anchored(!) container to store more loot. 17. DON'T be angry or smack if you get ganked at any step. Learn from it. Don't post about it. Get a new cheap frig instead. Sh*t happens. 17. After some evenings you should easily have dozens of millions. 18. Find a newbie still mining after a week in his frig. Laugh about it.
You're welcome. Send ISK.
edit: I know its a wall of text. Blame the darn forum software --

Your first losses are always the hardest ones. You will constantly question 'Why?'
The truth is, there never has to be a reason. EVE is not the kind of game where reasoning rules the day. It's survival of the fittest.
After you've been here for a few months you'll develope a tough skin and only then wikll you understand why they call this the coldest mmo on the market.

To OP
Low sec is cruel, regardless of how new / old you are.
What you need to do is join a corp, where you can learn how to play eve, survive in low sec and fit your ship accordingly. There are plenty of academy's out there, we have one, so go and see what is to your liking and learn what is needed to survive !

When I was two weeks into the game, I figured out that you can't make money mining as a n00b. Not fast enough, anyway.
There are much faster ways to make money, and I don't mean by missioning, either. ------------------
