Work is progressing on using the new API that CCP are providing to make EVEMon and other 3rd party apps more secure.
Garthagk opened up the API for beta testing today and I've made a good start on converting EVEMon to use the new API. As soon as I'm happy that the code is working correctly, I'll be pushing out a new release with all the cool revelations stuff in it - and no usernames or passwords!!
The converted code is sitting in a CCPApi branch on SVN at the moment, but its not ready to use just yet.
Now, Garthagk... about that data dump...... _________________________________________________________ Senior EVEMon developer. Try EVEMon today! It's delicious!

Edited by: Hellman109 on 21/06/2007 01:58:23 Fantastic, Im sure it will also help security nutters who hate giving 3rd parties usernames and passwords too, even though its not a problem with Evemon.
Evemon is my favorite tool, second to that is Quickfit, but I use evemon 100x more then quickfit
EDIT: Any tips on new features? Apart from no logins?

How about converting it to java for some cross platform goodness? You know, follow in quick fit's footsteps. I've heard wonders about this, but i use a real operating system. ;)

Agreed, having a application like EVEmon lay in taskbar written in Java? I'd rather use that memory and CPU for something else.

You should have a more realistic suggestion, like having them target mono. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Yeah, I program in mono. Unless mono have got windows forms sorted, they'd have to port the entire GUI to gtk#, which is quite an undertaking. I haven't checked mono lately though, they might have provided a good interface for the methods.
I <3 Java :-D Even if it is really slow :-P

Excellent news! I know a few characters who won't use Eve Mon for this very reason. Now, they should.

If there is no username / password how will it know what character is yours (so you are not pulling info from another person's data).

You will have an API key which is used to perform the authentication only, asside of that you will need an userID. This is comparable with provideing an username and password only the difference is now if someone gets hold of your password (API key) they cannot: - login to your eve character - post useing your character on the forums - access your payment details etc
/edit Also your API key is unique so if you ever put it into an website you can only access your characters, everyone has an unique API key. Additionally there is an option to generate a new API key incase certain people got access trough your old API key and you no longer want this. There are 2 levels of API keys, 1 is an basic restricted version which only allows access to skills and generic stats. The 2nd level will also allow access to more sensitive information like your market transactions and specific corp information you have access to. It is not recommended to give away the second one unless you are 100% sure the information that can be accessed wont be misused by the people / program(s) that will access it

EVEMon also has the ability to read from xml data, so those of you that are worried about giving out your user/pass, just download an xml file from the EVE website and let EVEMon read that.
