WTF is it with these things?
If I want to listen to music, I use my generic MP3 player which doesn't restrict what I put on it. It's in my pocket, no-one can see it. I'm not embarrassed by it's meagre 4Gb capacity. I've only got one pair of ears, and I don't spend my entire life listening to music.
If I want to make a phone call, I use my phone, not my MP3 player.
I can't think of a single occasion I've been so desperate to browse the web that I wished my MP3 player would do it. I've got a computer that does it really fast, and for free.
Oh no, I've lost my really expensive phone....and MP3 player....and my internet access....and my life!!!!
Get off the hype wagon!

I don't think people really care about the brand of other people's gadgets...it's more about what they can do. Slowly technologies are converging and while we aren't *quite* there I don't think we're too far off portable *everything* devices. Things that can store and play music and videos, organise our calendars and contacts, make mobile calls, Emails, web surfing and take & view high-quality photos.
Though Windows Mobile phones f.ex can do all of these things they don't do them particularly well. I think in time these things will evolve further, and in a way, I kinda like the idea of the "one gadget to rule them all". In the meantime, click here for a funny exposT on the current gadget situation we're faced with! -------------

Guess I'm old fashion too. It *****s me up when I see people texting for like a hour with a friend and I'm thinking that I coulda said all that was typed in about 5 minutes or less. To each their own I guess. I gotta go churn my butter now....

Oooh, a really expensive portable thing that's popular, hard to get hold of, and has a good resale value.
I can hear the muggers rubbing their hands with glee.
They'll just need Apple to provide them with a convenient way to identify the users, like the white headphones did for iPods, and they'll be like bees to a honeypot!

I'm all for convergent gadgets (I'd love an audio player thats also a phone thats also a pepper spray that also makes the tea), but I'm not an iPod fan. They're DRM crazy. Dread to think what they've done to phones; maybe you can only call up people approved by Apple, and can't connect to any phone using Windows Mobile software... --------

The only way I would consider getting one is if my Ipod and my Phone both died at the same time. It would be nice to have one device, but I don't think it's as great as everyone says it is.

I like the idea of convergent devices as much as any geek, but frankly these days I actually enjoy my days off where I don't have to check my e-mail, messenger service, rss feeds and answer my phone. A convergent device will, by it's very nature, just shackle you to your communication network even more as you carry it around to perform the ancillary tasks of listening to music, taking pictures and keeping track of your appointments.
Giving you options to turn specific services off...yes, but not as effective as being able to leave the physical device at home. The potential for using a service will be lurking in the background, and societal expectation that you should be available to use the service will also grow. So I prefer to be able to leave my phone at home and take my camera and MP3 player with me. And I also prefer having my paper and pen day planner...nine time out of ten I have scribbled an appointment in while a pda, phone or laptop user was still navigating the menu structure.

Absolutely! Try getting hold of me on an off day when I've just got my iPod shuffle in my jeans pocket!
I'm a major technology freak, as long as it doesn't create the potential to give me work at any time of the day or night.

I am a music buff so I own a 40GB mp3 player. Not an Ipod. I can load whatever i like on my player just using windows explorer. And I have a company smartphone (which is a pain in the butt). I agree, all this apple hype is very boring. If you are sick of all that have a read of this

"Yeah, uhm...well...yes, I did get your text message. But when I wanted to reply, my EveryDoodad 5000 malfunctioned and instead the message got e-mailed to my cousin in Haversham. I tried to recall it, but it got locked into playing that mp3 of the Benny Hill theme tune in a recurring loop. Then while I hammered the touchscreen to get it to stop, I accidentally hit video, which did clear the mp3 loop, but sent 20 seconds of my swearing, furious visage to my mother. Somehow I have also managed to create a calendar entry which schedules a replay of the Benny Hill theme tune every five minutes in a mode that locks all other functions. Which is why you are getting this message scrawled in crayon on a left-over scrap of paper wrapped around my EveryDoodad 5000 that I will chuck through your window. If you need me, I will be raising llamas in Guatemala."

I actually have a serious question for those of you "In The Know" about the iPhone.
Can I assign songs on the iPhone to play as ringtones for people when they call?
It's an MP3 player and an apple product meanin I'm pretty sure that it works with your iTunes in putting music on your phone. Can I, therefore, take that song I just put on there, and have it play whenever X person calls?
If anyone KNOWS the answer to this question, or has a link to the answer, please let me know. *^_^*

I couldnt agree more. I bend over laughing at some of the people I see walking around with iPods like they are the ultimate in things to have. I mean if you were to look at Apple products objectivly, you cant help but laugh at the sheer number of limitations in the varous devices. The only reason people buy them is because of a fairly decent marketing ploy, though I would say they are falling on their face with the Mac vs PC commericals, that just has a huge arogence factor.

yeah that's my number one concern as well. The extra weight really adds to the amount of involuntary excercise I do and I feel that as a human being, if there's a way for society as a whole to be even lazier, we should take it!

I thought the iPhone was a neat idea. Then I saw it had a maximum size of 8GB. My iPod has 20 Gigs, and most of that is filled with what I deem "need to have" music. And iPhone is supposed to have all sorts of other stuff, like video?
Even if I could afford one, I wouldn't bother. Maybe when they have one that can actually hold all the stuff I'd want to use with it, I'd consider saving for one.
Also, there's the problem of using AT&T.
I've read several articles on /. about how AT&T has completely bungled the launch, and could potentially cause it to fail miserably. Apple is very enthusiastic about the iPhone, as they better damn be, but AT&T seems to be treating as just any old phone.
There are even horror stories about trying to set it up.
Fictional call:
User: "I can't get my iPhone to sync with my computer." AT&T: "You need to use the serial port cable to attach your phone to your computer." User: "Umm, there's no serial port cable with the phone, it uses USB." AT&T: "Whatevah. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Press ctrl-alt-dlt on the phone to reboot it." User: "There's no ctrl-alt-dlt option on the iPhone. It's a PHONE, not a computer." AT&T: "You obviously have no knowledge of what you're talking about. Please learn how to use your iPhone before using it. Have a nice day."
Exaggerated, but not far from the truth.
I hope Apple didn't sell too much of its soul to AT&T for use of its "network".
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

All you ppl are just jealous ;p iPod > any MP3 player. I never have to charge my iPod and it holds 3k Mp3's with a good browsing function that allows me to easily find any MP3 i wanna listen to. Beside that Apple has great service, my iPod Mini got destroyed and i got a 30g iPod video in return. Beat that!

Edited by: Arron S on 03/07/2007 08:38:31 iPod is the same as any other MP3 player. Thing is that have put so much advertisments around it, along with making to popular so that every dumb ass wants to pay 200+ dollars for one, where they can get any other MP3 player(Which probably will not break as easy) for 50 - 100 dollars(for a reasonable one) in short, its apart of popular culture, and like clothing and stuff, some types of people must have it to be "cool" or else they will be a loser or somthing.
So why not stop there? lets put an "i" in front of other things and put some cool features on it and change them more for it, like the iPhone.(its what I would do if I was apple). ANyway I am still waiting for the i*****, that not only viberates but vibrates to some stupid song of your choice.
In conclusion, I don't really pay much attention to advertising or popular culture(well I just don't care). But I do know if threw advertising, I can sell a ****ty ass product on the market. I know some people ***** about advertising and **** brash washing people, but its their own ******* stupidly thats doing it, so in the end its their own fault.
I'm a freak because I don't go out and buy every usless gadgit on the market I buy what I feel like buying.

Hmm, it seems technology is nearly as sensitive a subject as politics and religion these day
The UI looks very good but it's essentially a phone with good mp3 features.
It also misses out many features that are considered standard on a phone, like MMS and...
Originally by: Ranar Estraad Can I assign songs on the iPhone to play as ringtones for people when they call?
...MP3s as ringtones.
Whilst it looks nice and will probably be very nice to use, it's way behind phones that were released 18 months ago.
This will sell on hype and form over function; which is fine for the fashion conscious, but it's certainly not a revolutionary phone as Apple would have us believe.
Going in with an exclusive with one network in US sounds like a bad idea too; people tend to like freedom of choice.
