For new players who are looking into getting started with scanning and exploration I strongly recommend watching the Scanning Tutorial on youtube.
While on trial account you should go for your race specific scanning frigate (Heron, Probe, Magnate, Imicus)
As a long term goal you want one of the tech 2 Covert Ops versions of these ships (Buzzard, Cheetah, Anathema, Helios)
Useful skills includes Astrometrics Astrometric Acquisition Astrometric Pinpointing Astrometric Rangefinding
If you are looking for a more detailed guide on the topic you should check out the evelopedia: Exploration Guide |

Dang, beaten to the punch by ISD Etetia :)
Note that cloakiness is not mandatory, but being careful when exploring lowsec is mandatory. Some people fit an Ishtar or Pilgrim as an "all in one" exploration vessel. Others move around in an Orca with a covops frigate to find things, and a combat ship to actually engage the encounters. Moving around with an Orca in lowsec is hazardous.
More details of "all-in-one" fittings for T2 or T3 cruisers can be found in the Ships and Modules forum.

Even though I fly covops, I much prefer imicus for hisec exploring. Train it, you'll like it too.
Low and null obviously offer different challenges that imicus doesn't handle well, but for hisec it's a good worker. |

Is the Exploration tutorial available to you? I don't know much about trial accounts.
If it is, I suggest that you take it, if you haven't already. It will provide you with some useful skill books, and a frigate, complete with probing bonuses, that is appropriate to your race.
If you have problems with the Gravimetric mission, don't despair. Ask for help. It took me three days to do it the first time, and, after running 12 characters through it, it still takes an unpredictable amount of time, although I do get the time bonus every time now.

All five career development mission streams are available to rookies: Trade, Industry, Combat, "PvP" and Astrometrics.
If you're a rookie trying to find the Astrometrics career missions: press F12, select "Career Agents", and look for the agent offering you the mission "On-Board Scanning" - that's your astrometrics training agent.
