Originally by: CCP Sharkbait ...there is a patch for the python2.5 upgrade and the target date for that is a week tomorrow.
Are you doing a test to compare python 2.5.1 to the older (2.1?) version? The last test was cancelled and I haven't seen a new one announced, did I miss it? If so, I'd love to see some before/after numbers from the tests. If not, is the test going to happen? I was under the impression you wanted to load test and get an accurate before/after comparison to make sure it was actually helping and not hurting performance.

we have been planning these, but both code and network problems have stopped us. i was doing some benchmarking on a localserver and now i have finished with some of the main things i wanted to do, i will be continuing tomorrow and hopefully have some numbers to publish at the end of the week. there will also be tests again on sisi now trying to benchmark between the language versions. but from what we have seen so far, there is a reducion in CPU and memory usage when using python 2.5.1 against python 2.3.3.
another quick note, the 1st tests for the Desync issue was a success and it appears the fix has worked. there will be more tests for this throughout the week.

Joy!
I don't know who this Richard is. But, if I ever find out, I'm going to send him a present or take him or to dinner.

I'd like someone with the Dev group working on this issue to contact the group responsible for handling petitions of lag related reimbursement because they're still denying this problem even exists.

Not by all GM. I've had a reimbursement lately by getting desynced. Maybe I got lucky and it got logged but you should have a fair chance of getting a petition honored. (Its like a lottery tbh) |

I think CCP purposely denies petitions related to client software issues in order to force players to purchase and sell GTCs and increase CCP's profits as well as close large numbers of petitions to make their success rate of "resolved" issues look good on paper.

I'm not sure this pans out economically. You can only sell a GTC to someone who will buy a GTC. The pool of buyers doesn't change when I lose a ship. Theoretically, only the pool of sellers changes and that may not even be happening as many people simply refuse to convert real money into game money. Either way, there is no change in revenue by telling people to take a hike when they request reimbursement. ----

We now have a confirmed fix for this issue and we are planning to release it as a part of Revelations 2.1 next week.
Revelations 2.1 is a "Need for Speed" upgrade; we're upgrading to Stackless Python 2.5 and we're compiling the Python interpreter using the new Profile Guided Optimization (PGO) feature of Visual Studio 2008.
There is a clear reduction in memory and CPU usage and we'll have numbers to publish at the time of release.
In addition we're fixing a few other defects, in particular performance related issues. More details later in the patch notes.

Let me guess. Somebody accidentally inverted the condition of an "if" triggering client "self ship ostition" update (if that even exists in the first place... if not, it should, at least every 15-30 seconds as a security measure).

Edited by: Liquidswar on 18/07/2007 18:14:47 How can players effected by this issue convince the GMs that are responding to petitions that there is a real client software issue involved and therefore justify reimbursement for items lost without loads of server-side logs to back it up?
The response my pilots have received from CCP is that the problem must be their ISP or computer or anything other than the client software. I'm happy to see a fix is available but there was considerable damage done to the confidence players have in CCP and I'd like to see someone outside of this dev forum admit there is a client software problem!

After all this looking, it was simply noticed that this was in the code:
40 IF l$ = x THEN GOTO 60 50 x = LOGON 60 END

Just curious. If you lost, oh say, a mother ship because of said problems and defects, would reimbursement be on the table? Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Sahwoolo |

I¦m glad that you guys have fond the solution to this issue. Personally, i think this has been one of the most annoying bugs/issues so far in my EvE playing career.
Hopefully the implementation of the fix will run smoothly for you guys.
Though, i have a question regarding this issue. I¦m not sure you are the right man to ask, but if not so, i¦m sure the right person will be made aware of this question
Since CCP has acknowleged that desynch is a problem, does that mean that people who have lost several ships and implants due to desynch and have made petitions, will get their stuff reimbursed?

Hmmm, Visual Studio 2008 huh. So you guys are breaking MS's EULA by releasing production code from a beta IDE? Not that I really care, but you might want to watch that. I've seen MS come down hard on people for that.

+1 to that!
More programmer time to speed and fleet battle fixes and less to total uselessness like heat and station walking ftw!

Was thinking VS8 and meant to write VS2005. It's actually VS2005 SP1, we waited until after the first service pack to upgrade.

The code we changed to fix this issue has not been modified in a long time.
The client runs a local simulation of the world. But the client is just a dumb terminal and it regularly receives updates from the master simulation that is running on the server. These updates may arrive out of order and the client then resets its simulation. The desync issue was caused by the client being unable to reset its simulation in certain extreme cases.
There are no code changes in Revelations II that would have caused this. It's more likely that new and different game mechanics, ever increasing solar systems, fleet battles, etc, exposed an old issue.
The reset of the simulation could also potentially have produced a perceived lag in the client and caused extra load the server when desynched clients requested full state updates.
This fix will be included in Revelations 2.1, which is a "Need for Speed" upgrade. More details on those changes will be in the release announcement, the patch notes, the press release, the news letter and the dev blog at the time of release

Oh and just a thought, can you get the server to log if the client and Server simulations are out of sync, then give it to the GM's so the cant say "our logs show nothing was wrong"

So is that what the Monitor->Reset button does? It doesn't always work but it's definitely not a placebo solution.
