I'm playing EVE with headphones at full volume and I can still hear the WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMBULANCE

Umm, there is around here? The only people I know who would keep a dog in a cage are professional trainers and wouldn't be asking for help on the EVE-O Fora. -

we got a kenel for our dog witch is a wooden kage really. and well my sister spent more time in it trying to get the dog into it. had it two years and he would still rather sit outside in the rain then use it.

give it the happy stick -
Basically you hit it behind the ear with a stick - if he survives, he'll be groggy for a while - usually he won't bother you much for a while. - not that I'd do that, but I remember that advice from some dude on a video on a erm - website - with ... girls.. and men. so not necessarly the most serious site for pet advices - but it sticked to my mind for some reason - -------------------------------------------------- No trees were killed in the sending of this message. why not take it out for a walk down the park. play with it for a bit, do some obedience training then take it home feed it and put it in its cage.
it will be happy and tired and will rest. never reinforce any whining. stick to a pattern. never negatively reinforce. when the dog has rested a bit and is quiet. go out with the leash and reward it with excersize and play again.
dogs are social(pack) critters, it wants to be social, even if social, is you shouting at it to to shut up. so whine -> gets shouting, is reward!
you are intrinsically trying to alter its natural instincts for company by putting it in a cage, so it will take a lot more work in training than the behavior of being close to its pack.
dogs are hard work. thats why i like cats.

Dogs dont like to be locked away, they love attention and if your locking it in a cage you shouldnt be a dog owner.
As someone previously stated - only professional dog owners use cages with their animals and thats for transporting them. --------------------------------

Edited by: R''olyat on 05/07/2007 15:53:13 wow what a bunch of hippies.
In some places dogs NEED to be caged, for example and apartment or a rented house, especially puppies. I'm sure it's not in it's cage 24/7. But puppies shouldn't be aloud to roam around the house until they have been properly house trained.

Jesus why do people have to be this thick? Its not like she will be LIVING in a cage, its just to make her customed for it, as when going on vacation up in my cabin in the mountains she will be in a car for 4 hours and then she will be in a cage in the back of the car.

I've had my dog since he was a puppy, and I have never kept him in a cage. Why on earth do you need to keep the dog in a cage anyway???

To keep him from taking a dump on the floor when you're not watching, or maybe tearing something up.
Some puppies are VERY mischievous and have to be kept in a cage when the owner is busy until they have been trained not to do such things. ___________________________

Oh man I couldn't live without my dog. I got him from a customer 2 years ago when I bartended and he was about 4 weeks old. Rotweiler/golden retreiver mix which makes him a rotten retreiver. Now he gets to spend time on 10 acres of ranch. He eats hay with the horses, pulls boulders out of the ground and chases them down the hill, takes up the couch, and gets the passenger seat without a cage (although I have to put the doors on when I take him cause he has a tendency to jump out and chase cattle). The difference between dogs and cats is mainly that dogs are much more loyal and stick to your side while cats generally do their own thing until they want food.

lmao, absolutely, dogs are pack orintated, cats are nocturnal solo hunters. cats do have their loyalties and the main one is food, if you are feeding a cat its yours. but they can be quite companionable as well. follow you around and seek comfort by your side. they can even enjoy excersize traing, be trained for groooming and travel. a house cat/lap cat is actually just a big kitten as they never have to leave their mother, the owner, who feeds and grooms(pats) it, so don't have adault cat behaviour.
i can understand why people like dogs, i have a background problem likeing them as i grew up in the country where there a lot of irresponsible pet owners and found too many of my pets (rabits, cats, kittens, chickens) torn apart by dogs.
as to training a dog to a cage, the only thing it can do in one is rest, so try to make sure it wants rest when it goes in.

It pretty much depends on the dog.. Some get used to it in 2 weeks, some I'll let you know when he does.. 1 year and counting.
Yes people putting a dog in a cage to get him used to it is quite normal, you need to get them accustomed for the travel, or for when you're out of the house to go say shopping and you don't want them tearing up your house.
You rather people take them with them in the burning sun and leave them in a locked car ?
There's 2 sides to every story :)

I have crate-trained dozens of dogs and to this day the most successful technique has been to put a blanket down inside the crate and then place a hot water bottle and a wind up alarm clock (the kind that goes tick-tick-tick) under the blanket in the back of the crate. This will simulate the presence of the mother or another dog. It will still take a 2-3 weeks for the pup to get accustomed to its surroundings, but stick to a routine and the two of you will be alright.
