Revelations II was released a short time ago and a part of the release was the deployment of the API Project. The community has been asking for more information on the Project, as well as a refreshed data dump with updated Revelations II information. Garthagk has heard and complied.
While not a lengthy blog, it still provides much of the information the community has been asking for and also gives a shout out to some EVE players who have contributed their efforts to the betterment of the community. Third Party Development (and a new data dump!)

MS SQL and MySQL? You're spoiling us. Many, many thanks to the unnamed converter to MySQL. I've done it myself for previous dumps and it's a pain in the bum.

You uncompress the file before importing into the DB.

Edited by: Brad Stone on 13/07/2007 06:46:38 Garhagk has been great at supporting us 3rd party devs recently. He's always willing to listen to our suggestions and answer questions, and even fix the occasional ermmm "unintended feature" in the api. He also gave us early sight of a betatest version of the dump.
In a nutshell, with this increased level of support from Garthagk and other CCP staff, the future of 3rd party tools is very very bright indeed.

Wouldn't it be better to be on Freenode? That's the most developer oriented IRC server that I know of. I mean... It's actually against the rules to have channels there not related to projects or products. Just a thought... (Oh, and I'm gonna be wherever that channel may be anyway)

Hello!
The offical API discussion thread is much overloaded with people asking for help with there implementations. So I just ask here.
Will there be an afterRefId option to get data after a known Id?
I think his this would be very helpful. It would speed up the process of downloading the data fom the EVE-server.
Actually I do:
1 getXMLData 2 looking for the last refid in XML 3 if I already have it in my database -> Exit; else Step 1
With afterRefId I could do it this way:
1 getXMLData with last refId from my database 2 if I get less than 1000 rows -> Exit; else Step 1
So in the best case (0 new datasets) there will be a huge speed up. In the worst case (more than new 1000 datasets) there will be no speed up on the first set of data. But on the last...
Thank you for reading. Thebriwan

I updated an script which convert dumped mssql files to MS SQL Express 2005 Transact-SQL.
http://evewiki.info/w/user/Gentzen/eveexport2mssql.py.txt
what this script do is: - insert 'use rev2;' at first. - convert 'true' to '1', 'false' to '0' - delete 'COMMIT;' - insert 'GO' for every 40000 lines - convert UNKOWN to INTEGER, DATE to datetime

My wife might have issue with that and to be honest I did little more than make the announcement. Garthagk did the lion's share of the work, he deserves the credit (and offers).
I am willing, however, to preview pictures and forward worthy candidates to Garthagk so he can continue his efforts on the API project uninterrupted.

Hi, I'd like to know why CCP went with a custom API system instead of for example SOAP or XML-RPC? Both would have provided very easy access to the data for any languages.
I do understand that it is possible now with XML, yet the WSDL feature of SOAP allow someone to convert URL into straight functions which remove a lot of issues and also returns object instead of having to parse and figure out XML.
Oh well... wish you could offer both soon, hate to do the dirty work.
